CNN —Before the nationwide influx of suburban malls and the convenience of online shopping, there was a golden age of American department stores. Satow’s evocation of this historic age is timely, with the death knell for many US department stores well and truly ringing in our ears. Sally Moss“When department stores originally opened, (they represented) one of the rare opportunities for women to congregate together in public,” Satow told CNN. Her motivation was to make department stores enticing — and accessible — for women of all means.) Read: “The Dallergut Dream Department Store” (2024)A bestseller in Korea, the debut novel (and first of a two-book series) from author Miye Lee weaves a fantastical narrative around, as its title suggests, a department store selling consumers’ perfect dreams.

"The person who's the 'money person' has to take on the responsibility of gently recalibrating the relationship." Presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum of ''Sigamos Haciendo Historia'' coalition waves to supporters during the 2024 closing campaign event at Zocalo on May 29, 2024 in Mexico City, Mexico. Mexico's left-leaning climate scientist Claudia Sheinbaum secured enough votes to become the Latin American country's first-ever female president. The country's electoral institute published a rapid count estimate late Sunday night saying that Sheinbaum had won the presidential election. Sheinbaum has previously worked as a contributing author to a report from the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Yet, the 61-year-old did not make the climate threats facing Mexico a central part of her campaign.

At the beginning of the year, I was facing nearly $30,000 in credit-card debt. When December ticked into January, I knew it was time to face something I had been putting off: my credit-card debt. This compounded my stress about my credit-card debt. I had $5,000 in credit-card debt left after that, and I'm following my budget to pay that off. Now, I'm determined to use my clean slate to set up a solid financial future, not one built on debt.

The criminal trial and conviction of (mostly former) national leaders has happened in stable, mature democracies, just as it has in former dictatorships. The track record of convicted leaders shows just how risky it is to try to predict what will happen. In 2017, South Korea impeached and later criminally convicted now-former President Park Geun-hye in a bizarre corruption scandal involving the influence of a friend and confidante. After a scandal emerged involving the state oil company Petrobras, Lula was convicted in 2017 of corruption and money laundering. “Political leaders can choose how they will speak about these institutions.”

When your kid comes out as trans, here’s what to do

CNN spoke with a doctor, gender rights activists and parents of trans children about what to say when a child comes out as transgender, how to address certain challenges and what receiving gender-affirming care is like. Some parents want to support their child but worry if their gender identity is the result of a phase, or if they’ll change their mind later. It would be their decision resulting from the exploration of their gender identity, rather than someone trying to control it for them. Rhyland’s son later realized he is trans masculine nonbinary and uses he/him pronouns, and he’s OK with Rhyland calling him her son. (Trans masculine nonbinary means someone’s gender identity is nonbinary, yet they present in a typically masculine fashion with their name, style and more.)

Will South Africa have a white president soon, or might parties promoting socialism seize ownership of his home, asked Mr. Cebekhulu, who said he voted for the A.N.C. CNN —The guilty verdict against Donald Trump in his New York hush money trial is a momentous news story in itself. What’s far less clear, and what no polling can predict, is the effect it will have on voters’ willingness to support Trump in the presidential election. Fifteen percent said they’d be more likely to vote for Trump and 17% that they’d be less likely to do so. Take the roughly one-quarter of Trump supporters in the NPR/PBS/Marist poll who said that a conviction would increase their chances of supporting him over President Joe Biden. The best gauge of any immediate, tangible effect on voters’ preferences might be polls of the presidential race.

Austin said that the region is seeing a "new convergence" around nearly all aspects of security in the Indo-Pacific. Singapore CNN —The death of any Filipino citizen at the hands of another country in the South China Sea would be “very close” to an act of war, Philippines President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. warned Friday as his nation faces increasingly fraught clashes with Chinese vessels in the South China Sea. China has increasingly pushed its territorial claims in the South China Sea, and China Coast Guard ships, reinforced by maritime militia boats, have been involved in a series of fraught clashes over the last year that has seen Philippine ships damaged and Filipino sailors injured by water cannon. “Art is one of our oldest creations (humans invented paint long before the wheel), one of the earliest means of communication (we drew long, long, long, long before we could write), and one of our most universal urges,” she wrote. When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel announced plans late last year to occupy a sensitive corridor of land in the Gaza Strip, along the border with Egypt, the response from Cairo was public, explicit and ominous. Egypt said that an Israeli military presence there would violate the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries. This week, the Israeli military announced that it had seized “tactical control” of the corridor. Yet despite the Egyptian government facing domestic pressure to take a harsher stance on Israel following its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, there has been no public Egyptian comment on the seizure of the corridor. The silence may be a reflection of the dilemma Egypt finds itself in after nearly eight months of war in Gaza.

Despite this income, my husband and I have not agreed to — nor do we plan to — pay for the college tuition of our oldest daughter, a sophomore at the University of Iowa. To be fair, we've decided that we, as parents, don't get to choose which college our children attend. With rising tuition costs, my husband and I think it's essential to evaluate whether the outcomes in terms of ROI justify the financial outlay for college. Committing to paying for one child's college education means we must do the same for all of them to maintain fairness. Evaluating whether to pay for our kids' college tuition was a challenging decision, but it's rooted in our desire to foster autonomy, responsibility, and financial prudence.

And among those watching most closely are world leaders near and far. Of course, world leaders have generally stayed mum on the issue of which man they prefer – although I would wager that most favor the status quo over a return to the raucous years of Trump’s presidency. Some world leaders have already signaled their aversion to another Trump presidency. But for these foreign leaders, coming out against Trump is a move that is chock full of risks. The stakes in this election are too high for global leaders to stay mum.

When mortgage rates shoot up, as they did over the past two years, many would-be sellers decide they don't want to move after all. AdvertisementAs the Federal Reserve began pushing up borrowing rates in the spring of 2022, hoping to reel in rising inflation, mortgage rates went vertical. So far, this system of pooling together mortgage bonds and selling them to investors is pretty close to the American way of doing things. When US homeowners pay off their mortgages, they have only one option: pony up the amount left on the loan. That's not just good for buyers or sellers or mortgage loan officers — it's good for everyone.

CNN —In recent weeks, an increasingly familiar list of Republicans has dominated the not-very-subtle competition to become Donald Trump’s running mate. Trump himself has added to the air of inevitability by floating these names in interviews and appearances over and over. A source confirmed Trump floated Cotton’s name during a recent private dinner, surprising some of his guests.
