The other kind of search — "exploratory search" — is the hard one. That's where you don't know what you don't know. When you're scrolling through the links in a Google search, looking for "esoteric shit," as one search expert calls it, you see some pages that just look dodgy, maybe in ways you can't even totally articulate. But search chatbots can fake all that. Google's search pages already aren't fully trustworthy — they overindex YouTube video results, for example, because YouTube is a subsidiary of Google.
But Twitter’s changes erecting a paywall for API access may jeopardize all that, Tromble and other researchers said. Undermining the fight against botsMusk has framed Twitter’s API restrictions as part of his wider effort to stamp out spammy, automated accounts. Ironically, however, Musk’s looming changes to the Twitter API might make it harder to study bot behavior on Twitter. API access has provided a critical resource for that work. “The researchers who were signed up to the program have heard nothing from the company in months, since Musk’s acquisition.”Adding to Twitter’s scrutiny by regulatorsBeyond the immediate impact to researchers, Twitter’s transparency issues could land the company in hot water with policymakers.
Twitter has announced a $100 monthly charge for low-level use of its API. Last week, Twitter's CEO Elon Musk proposed a charge but did not specify the level of usage. The official announcement comes after Twitter blocked the use of apps like Tweetbot and Twitterific. Last week, Twitter's CEO Elon Musk floated the $100 monthly charge for API access, saying the interface was being "abused badly" by "bot scammers & opinion manipulators." Popular third-party services, including Tweetbot and Twitterrific, relied on the use of Twitter's API.
This is going to be the year of “generative AI” the way 2012 was the year of Instagram. (Yes, Bing still exists and Microsoft hopes AI can make it relevant again for the first time ever.) Generative AI is the technology that underpins ChatGPT, the chatbot that’s gotten everyone in the content-generation biz (hello!) But Google, Microsoft and their rivals are still bullish. “We have even more exciting, AI-enabled innovations in the works that will change the way people search, work and play.”
That's that for the latest Fed talk — but today, we're taking a closer look at the AI hype train passing through the stock market. And small-cap tech stocks with names that nod to bots like BigBear.ai and SoundHound AI have similarly notched gains so far this year. Tech stocks have come back with a "vengeance," Fundstrat's Mark Newton said. It's a necessary step for policymakers to take, the group said, even if it means declines in stock market returns. Wall Street's biggest firms are warning their clients not to trust the stock market rally.
A Bronx high school teacher asked ChatGPT to make a lesson plan and script on wearable tech, per NYT. Students followed the lesson as part of an experiment — and they were unhappy with the results. Jayda Arias, an 18-year old student, told the Times that the lesson was "very bland" and that it "reminded me of fourth grade." The classroom experiment comes as teachers at schools inside and outside of New York grapple with how to integrate ChatGPT into their curriculums. Shuman's ChatGPT lesson experiment was part of that approach.
Microsoft plans to release software to help large companies create their own chatbots similar to ChatGPT later this year, CNBC has learned. The company provides the cloud-computing back end for ChatGPT, and in January Microsoft said it had invested billions of dollars in OpenAI. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it is augmenting Bing, its search engine, and Edge, its internet browser, with ChatGPT-like technology. In addition, Microsoft plans to announce technology for companies, schools and governments to create their own bots with ChatGPT, according to a person briefed on the matter, who asked not to be named while discussing private plans. But Microsoft intends for chatbots launched with its business ChatGPT service to contain up-to-date information, the person said.
The threat of AI is increasingly clear and well founded, and it is causing serious anxiety. Luckily, this wave of AI technology is projected to create 97 million new jobs, according to the World Economic Forum. Their forecast has proven to be true so far, as despite being in the early stages of development, AI technology has already significantly threatened a variety of industries. Just within the last couple of weeks, Buzzfeed announced that it will be using AI technology to generate content, while Netflix Japan has already created an animated film using AI-generated artwork, according to Vice. Simply put, the AI revolution is here to stay, and its ramifications will become increasingly noticeable in our everyday lives.
Sweeney shares data that tracks private jets of celebrities, including Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Sweeney has used the ADS-B Exchange website to keep tabs on flights since he started tracking private-jet data back in 2020. ADS-B Exchange founder Dan Streufert previously said in a statement that the acquisition would accelerate the site's growth. It was built using the same open-source code that was used to create ADS-B Exchange. Still, the agency acknowledges that these are not a "silver bullet" and can be skirted via ADS-B Exchange.
I'm Matt Weinberger, deputy editor of Insider's tech analysis team, filling in for Diamond Naga Siu. Is it time for CEOs to start losing their jobs? Ed Zitron argues for Insider that the thousands of tech workers who lost their jobs in recent months are actually just taking the fall for the real problem in Silicon Valley — CEOs who aren't up to the task of leadership. He praised the CEOs of Apple and Intel for recently taking pay cuts as their companies hit tougher times. Late Friday afternoon, a federal jury officially ruled that the Tesla CEO's infamous "funding secured" tweet didn't harm shareholders, making him not liable for damages.
New York CNN —Google is officially set to confront OpenAI’s ChatGPT — and soon. Ammanath said that “unintended consequences” accompany every new technology and reluctantly expressed confidence that it too will occur with AI chatbots, unless significant precautions are taken. Ammanath stressed that computer scientists working on AI have yet to solve for bias, a years-long problem, as well as other worrisome issues that plague the technology. And in its wake, other outlets like BuzzFeed, are already embracing the robot-writing technology to help it generate content and quizzes. “This is a new dimension that generative AI has brought in,” Ammanath added.
In an interview with Time magazine, Mira Murati — chief technology officer at OpenAI, the company behind the buzzy AI chatbot ChatGPT — said schools shouldn't rush to ban the technology on their campuses due to concerns over cheating. Instead, Murati said ChatGPT "has the potential to really revolutionize the way we learn," particularly in settings where not everyone has the same learning preferences or abilities. Still, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed Murati, stating he also believes ChatGPT has a place in schools and considers it a more engaging way to learn. "I have used it to learn things myself and found it much more compelling than other ways I've learned things in the past," Altman told StrictlyVC. A digital-media lecturer at the University of Leeds, for example, told Insider she's used AI in her classroom since 2018.
Twitter plans to charge developers to access the API used to make third-party services and bots. Elon Musk has tweeted it would offer a free, write-only API for bots "providing good content." Saying he was "responding to feedback," Musk tweeted late Saturday: "Twitter will enable a light, write-only API for bots providing good content that is free." Musk said then that the free access had previously been "abused badly" by "bot scammers & opinion manipulators." "Just ~$100/month for API access with ID verification will clean things up greatly," he tweeted.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra first reported that Twitter is reaching out to businesses about the plan. Twitter currently offers gold checks to verified businesses, and also allows them to place a small, hyperlinked version of their logo next to the gold check of other pages associated with their business. In addition to the $1,000 per month for a business account, Twitter plans to charge $50 each for the affiliated accounts, according to The Information's Erin Woo. The plan was relaunched in December, when the gold checks were first introduced as an added layer of distinction between verified businesses and individuals who had just paid $8 for the blue check. Last month, Musk also advertised a yet-to-be-released subscription service for Twitter that would allow users to access the site without ads.
"There are several ways to invest in AI," ChatGPT answered. "Purchase shares of private AI companies," it also responded. ChatGPT's charm stems from its natural-language ability, so I asked it:What companies can I invest in for exposure to natural language processing? Microsoft (MSFT): Microsoft has a number of different NLP products, including Microsoft Cognitive Services and the Azure Machine Learning platform. But I asked ChatGPT anyway: Can I invest in ChatGPT?
WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Ticketmaster is preparing to sell tickets for Beyonce's first tour in six years in a different way, hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's Taylor Swift debacle. Ticketmaster tweeted on Thursday that the demand to register for a chance to buy tickets for concerts in the nine cities in Group A, whose registration closed on Friday, exceeded the number of tickets by more than 800%. The North American leg of Beyonce's tour opens in Toronto on July 8 and closes in New Orleans on Sept. 27, according to the Ticketmaster website. After loud complaints from Taylor Swift fans, the company blamed more than 3.5 billion requests from fans, bots and scalpers for its overwhelmed website. On Thursday, the Judiciary Committee retweeted a news report about the Beyonce tour announcement and tweeted to @Ticketmaster, "We're watching."
ChatGPT, like other AI tools, suffers from a bias problem that could impede corporate adoption. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, admitted on Wednesday that ChatGPT has "shortcomings around bias", though he didn't go into detail. Unfortunately for OpenAI, ChatGPT has already had several cases of bias emerge. "You don't have to think very hard to realize there's an enormous quantity of toxic content of absolutely every variety imaginable that's present in that training data." Though OpenAI has found success so far, Wooldridge could see a scenario where the firm is pushed by customers to reveal its training data.
Elon Musk proposed charging $100 a month for access to Twitter's API. He said the $100 fee along with ID verification for Twitter's API would clean up "bad" bots. It was easy for 100,000 bots "to do bad things" when there was no cost or verification process in place for API access, he said. "Just ~$100/month for API access with ID verification will clean things up greatly," Musk added. Developers can use Twitter's API to create third-party services, such as Tweetbot and Twitterrific.
Ticketmaster is gearing up for what's expected to be high demand for tickets to Beyoncé's upcoming "Renaissance World Tour," as the ticketing giant continues to face criticism over the botched presale for Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour last year. Beyoncé announced Wednesday that her first solo world tour since 2016 will kick off May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, and conclude Sept. 27 in New Orleans. Registration windows vary by city, and the company warns "there will be more demand than there are tickets available." In November, verified fans for Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour presale faced long wait times, confusion and technical glitches. Within 48 hours of the presale going live, Ticketmaster canceled the general public sale, citing "extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand."
The microblogging site, which was taken over by Elon Musk last October, said that from Feb. 9 it would "no longer support free access to the Twitter API." Third-party services using the Twitter API will have to use its basic paid tier instead, the company said. APIs are software tools used by third-party developers to access data from applications and use it to make new services. The Twitter API is also used by the newsgathering service Dataminr to alert journalists to information that emerges on Twitter in real time. Under his rein, Twitter laid off roughly half of its global workforce and incorporated the verification badge into its paid Twitter Blue subscription product.

[1/2] Twitter Inc.'s former security chief Peiter "Mudge" Zatko testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., September 13, 2022. REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/File PhotoFeb 1 (Reuters) - Rapid7 Inc (RPD.O), the cybersecurity firm that hired Twitter Inc whistleblower Peiter Zatko last month, is exploring options that include a possible sale after attracting acquisition interest, according to people familiar with the matter. The Boston-based company is working with investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) as it considers approaches from parties that include private equity firms, the sources said. Rapid7 specializes in so-called vulnerability management, providing software tools and services that help businesses assess and monitor security risks. Rapid7 said last month it had hired Zatko, a former hacker who served as Twitter's head of security until his firing in January 2022, as a part-time consultant.
Elon Musk has discussed his plans for X, an "everything app," on Twitter and in private texts. AP Photo/Jacquelyn MartinPrivate texts about a blockchain-based platformMusk has also discussed creating a social media platform built on a blockchain. In April, the billionaire privately outlined his idea for a "Doge" social media platform in texts to his younger brother, Kimbal Musk. "I have an idea for a blockchain social media system that does both payments and short text messages/links like Twitter," Musk texted. Shortly after buying Twitter, Musk began charging Twitter users for the app's blue check mark.
Let's break down what to know ahead of the Federal Reserve's widely expected interest rate hike today. Today's rate hike decision probably won't surprise anyone, as markets have long priced in a 25-basis-point move for the February and March meetings. Goldman said he'll be watching for three things in Powell's speech:Powell will talk tough: "He's going to push back on financial markets. In any case, according to Reinking, unless Powell musters up some serious aggression, any messaging will ultimately fall upon deaf ears. What will your investment strategy look like following another interest rate hike from the Fed?
