Read previewUS Navy warships that spent months battling the Houthis have faced unprecedented threats during their restless deployments, chief among them being anti-ship ballistic missiles, a deadly weapon that had never been used in combat until recently. The missiles came in as it was responding to a hijacking attempt by pirates, marking the first operational use of such weapons. It was right after this that the Mason first detected inbound anti-ship ballistic missiles. AdvertisementSince their campaign began last fall, the Houthis have launched dozens of anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen. Multiple Navy officers with the strike group have applauded their warships' ability to engage the anti-ship ballistic missiles.

How J.D. Vance Won Over Donald Trump

The former president had a thick stack of papers on his desk: printouts of Mr. Vance’s copious broadsides against Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump, using an expletive, bluntly told Mr. Vance: You said some nasty stuff about me. This was the first time he was meeting Mr. Trump, and Mr. Vance needed the former president to like him or at least leave the meeting with an open mind. He told Mr. Trump that he had bought into what he described as media lies and that he was sorry he got it wrong. Of all people, Mr. Vance told Mr. Trump, Mr. Vance himself should have understood.

Sam Altman discussed the possibility of granting some confidentiality around what people tell AI. Altman brought up the idea while talking about his new AI health venture with Arianna Huffington. AdvertisementShould the sensitive information we share with AI be regulated under a confidentiality agreement similar to attorney-client privilege? Sam Altman mulled the idea in a recent interview with The Atlantic, saying society may "decide there's some version of AI privilege." "When you talk to a doctor or a lawyer, there's medical privileges, legal privileges," Altman said.

Senator J.D. Mr. Vance was frequently interviewed for his views on the white working-class communities described in his book, full of the types of voters drawn to Mr. Trump’s “Make America Great Again” pitch, and to his insistence that he alone could save a nation in decline. In a 2016 article in The Atlantic, “Opioid of the Masses,” Mr. Vance wrote: “During this election season, it appears that many Americans have reached for a new pain reliever.” He went on: “It enters minds, not through lungs or veins, but through eyes and ears, and its name is Donald Trump.” But, he argued, Mr. Trump was not the solution. By 2018, Mr. Vance’s stance had softened, as he viewed Mr. Trump as speaking, if coarsely, to the frustrations of the people he had written about. By 2022, when Mr. Vance was running for Senate in Ohio, the self-described “Never Trump guy” from six years earlier received a race-changing Trump endorsement.

It's entirely possible that there are Greenland sharks still living today that were swimming in the North Atlantic Ocean at the time. Some theories include the shark's slow growth rate and low metabolic rate, but research is ongoing. Scientists hope that unlocking the secrets of how these fish age could help humans live longer, healthier lives. "We want to look closely at some of these hallmarks to determine if the Greenland shark shows any signs of traditional aging," he said. While Greenland sharks' remarkable aging process has allowed them to survive centuries, it could also be a double-edged sword as their environment rapidly changes.

CNN —The stranding of more than 140 dolphins off Cape Cod last month has been confirmed as the largest mass stranding of the mammals in United States history, animal rescuers say. A final review of data and aerial imagery of the mass stranding event near Wellfleet, Massachusetts, believed to have begun June 28, revealed 146 dolphins were involved, the International Fund for Animal Welfare announced Thursday. The organization said last month the stranding of what was initially said to be around 125 Atlantic white-sided dolphins in the area could possibly be “the largest single mass stranding event” in the organization’s history, CNN previously reported. The organization said the mass stranding event was “considered closed” by July 8, by which time more than 100 dolphins had been returned to their homes in deeper waters. More dolphins get stranded along Cape Cod’s 12-mile stretch of shoreline than any other location worldwide, according to the organization.

Donald Trump is on a winning streak, which is all the more remarkable because he's barely played the game. He's in the strongest position any Republican presidential hopeful has been in July since George W. Bush in 2000. AdvertisementSince the debate, Biden has faced almost daily onslaught of Democrats calling him to step aside. Even as he's refrained from rallies, he's still ranting on social media. Trump also handed Biden's campaign a major gift by offering one of his signature "I don't know them" denials about Project 2025.

Read previewThe Atlantic diet, based on traditional eating habits in regions of Spain and Portugal, could help you switch up your snacking habits for a longer, healthier life, according to a dietitian. AdvertisementFollowing a flexible eating plan like the Atlantic diet can help you make healthier long-term choices, such as swapping out processed snack foods for nutritious but delicious alternatives. Adding more beans to your diet can also help you follow the more flexitarian eating style of the Atlantic diet and its Mediterranean cousin by eating meat in moderation. You don't have to opt for tuna if you prefer salmon or even sardines since all kinds of seafood are encouraged on the Atlantic diet. While the Atlantic diet does emphasize whole foods, the focus is adding more healthy foods to your diet, instead of trying to cut back or deprive yourself.

Last year, a resale ticket to Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour cost an average of $2,183. I had never considered spending so much on live music before, but the Eras Tour featured songs spanning her entire career. I had been listening to Taylor Swift since I was about 14 years old and leaned on her music as I grew up. A few months later, Taylor Swift, now officially a billionaire, announced a European leg of her 2024 tour. For less money than Taylor Swift tickets were re-selling for in the U.S., I was able to eat tapas in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter and dine on sugar-dusted crepes with a view of the Eiffel Tower.

Last week, Sabato's Crystal Ball moved Michigan from "Lean Democratic" to "Toss Up" and Minnesota from "Likely Democratic" to "Lean Democratic." Recent covert acts of sabotage are far from the level of aggression and brutality that Russia has put on display in Ukraine. But make no mistake, a former top US general argued this week, Moscow is already fighting NATO. "We face wider Russian aggression directed at our own democracies, from hybrid attacks to threats in the high north," he added. "We, ourselves, have been experiencing hybrid attacks from Russia for decades, so that's why the threat has been quite clear, what we're facing." The Russian hybrid attacks were a notable discussion point on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington this week.

Along with the top- and bottom-line numbers, Wall Street is also keeping close watch on net interest income and guidance. "We see the greatest sources of potential earnings upside being driven by higher loan growth and capital markets." Barclays analyst Goldberg anticipates a slight decrease in net interest income in the second quarter due to a compression in net interest margin. Last year, the company posted $21.9 billion in net interest income for the period. Despite expectations for seasonally lower trading, he also expects strong investment banking activity and net interest income to drive ongoing positive momentum.

Hong Kong CNN —China is a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s war against Ukraine, NATO leaders said Wednesday, as the defense alliance hardens its stance on Beijing and the “systemic challenges” they say it poses to their countries’ security. For the third consecutive year, leaders of New Zealand, Japan and South Korea attended the NATO leaders’ summit in another sign of closer ties between the bloc and those countries, as well as Australia. NATO’s increasing focus on AsiaThe NATO leaders’ declaration is the latest step in what has been the bloc’s gradual hardening of tone on China in recent years. NATO leaders first mentioned the need to jointly address “opportunities and challenges” posed by China in a 2019 declaration, before moving to refer to “systemic challenges” the country poses in 2021. “The Indo-Pacific is important for NATO, given that developments in that region directly affect Euro-Atlantic security,” the leaders said in their declaration.

As NATO leaders gathered in Washington this week, one American president hailed the 75-year defensive alliance as the greatest “in the history of the world.”Another described it as a virtual protection racket and declared that he would abandon “delinquent” members to the mercies of Russian invaders. President Biden was the official host, greeting his European and North American counterparts in Washington with smiles, handshakes and solidarity, posing for grip-and-grin pictures and boasting of the progress and principle underlying the historic partnership. Former President Donald J. Trump was nowhere to be seen, not part of the formal events, but adding his voice from afar at a rally and in an interview. On July 14, 1789 (exactly 235 years ago this Sunday), some idealistic Parisians stormed a not especially crowded prison. They set in train a three-pronged revolution: for individual liberty, for civil equality, and, last and rarest, for communal obligation. In the National Assembly of 1789 and the National Assembly of 2024, some questions never get a final answer. Guillaume Lethière (1760—1832) was a Neoclassical painter of mixed race who has never, until now, been the subject of a solo museum show. Born in the French Caribbean, almost certainly into slavery, he reached the summits of artistic achievement in Paris and Rome.

Delta Air Lines on Thursday forecast record revenue for the third quarter thanks to booming summer travel demand, but its forecast fell short of analysts' estimates as carriers discounted fares after expanding flights. Adjusting for one-time items, Delta reported earnings of $1.53 billion, or $2.36 a share, in line with analysts' estimates. Delta said corporate travel continues to increase and that most customers expect to maintain or grow their corporate travel spending this quarter and after. Revenue from international travel has been strong since the pandemic waned, though airlines have expanded schedules, meaning more competition for customers. In the current quarter, Delta expects to break more revenue records.
