A British crocodile expert was sentenced Thursday to more than 10 years in prison in Australia after admitting to sexually abusing, torturing and killing dozens of dogs. He filmed videos of himself torturing dogs to death and then shared the videos online under pseudonyms, the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Australia heard. The “unalloyed pleasure” Britton took in torturing the animals was “sickeningly evident,” the BBC quoted Grant as saying. According to the court documents, Britton sexually abused his own pets, Ursa and Bolt, for years but sought out other dogs as well. “My own dogs are family and I have limits,” he said in a Telegram message cited in the documents.

But as the scale of the attack became clearer, with thousands of Ukrainian troops advancing up to 6 miles into Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin hurried to contain the fallout. Ukraine's attack catches Russia off guardA Russian military video showing a Ukrainian tank during an attack on the Kursk region in Russia in August. It's led to fierce criticism of the Kremlin from ultranationalist bloggers, who've questioned why the Russian military was so unprepared and criticized chaotic attempts to evacuate civilians. Putin has so far been able to avoid major domestic unrest from the two-year war — despite the vast casualties it's inflicted on the Russian military. But the 2023 rebellion by the Russian mercenary group Wagner exposed Putin's vulnerability to blowback from events in Ukraine.

For now, here's what we know — and what we don't know — about stem-cell therapy for knees. Bryan Johnson flew to the Bahamas to get MSC stem cells injected into his knees, hips, and shoulders — for about $16,500 per joint. Plus, even Sampson warns that young donor stem cells should not be seen as a quick fix or a panacea. Done with proper medical oversight, some studies have found no adverse effects from stem-cell treatments for various conditions. Botched stem-cell treatments can cause infection, blindness, and excessive cell growth, which can trigger the formation of tumors.

CNN —A video that surfaced online appears to show bodies on burnt-out Russian military trucks in the country’s southwestern Kursk region, the latest sign that Ukraine’s cross-border assault is probing more deeply and inflicting significant damage on Moscow’s troops. Rybar, one of the more prominent Russian military blogs, published a roundup of developments Friday that said the front lines have “somewhat stabilized” with the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Rybar cited local residents of Vtoroye Knyazhino, a settlement on the outskirts of Sudzha, as saying Ukrainian infantry entered their village. US officials say they do not believe Ukraine intends to hold Russian territory for the long term. Russian authorities help residents during evacuation efforts at a railway station in Oryol, Kursk region, August 9, 2024.

New York CNN —After a prolonged period of calm, financial markets went into a tailspin this week. One trigger for the selloff was the unraveling of the Japanese yen carry trade. Credit card debt is on the rise. Over the last year, roughly 9.1% of credit card balances transitioned into delinquency, the New York Fed reported. The average credit card charges more than 20% — near an all-time high. “With credit card balances at an all-time high and the average credit card rate hovering near record territory, it’s more important than ever to pay down this debt as soon as possible,” Rossman said. If you’re carrying a balance, try consolidating and paying off high-interest credit cards with a lower interest personal loan or switch to an interest-free balance transfer credit card, he advised.

The federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 15 years. Given the situation, here's an idea: Why not raise the federal minimum wage right now? Getting anything done legislatively is always a challenge, especially in an election year, but polls indicate a higher minimum wage is broadly popular. AdvertisementOnce the minimum wage gets so high that it starts to cause a bunch of job loss, that's a problem. If a higher minimum wage lifts millions of people out of poverty, that's incredible.

On Tuesday, Kyiv took badly needed resources and fresh troops and launched them well inside Russia. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, is pictured on July 2, 2023 in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. That could mean fewer gliding bombs hitting Ukrainian frontline troops and fewer missiles terrorizing Ukraine’s urban communities. Russia may be invited to attend the next peace conference held by Ukraine and its allies. It is unclear if Ukraine’s move into Kursk is motivated by that, or a simple move to inflict damage where the enemy is weak.

Media and chemicals stocks both slipped 0.6%, while travel stocks gained 1.28%. On Wall Street, stocks gained after U.S. weekly initial jobless claims figures came in lower than expected, alleviating some concerns about the state of the labor market. Last Friday's U.S. jobs report had shown slowing employment growth, sparking recession fears and subsequent market volatility. There was an element of market overreaction to that initial jobs report, Janet Mui, head of market analysis at RBC Brewin Dolphin, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Thursday morning. "The jobs data is actually not that bad, employment is still growing and particularly importantly, real wage growth is still positive.

New York CNN —US stocks surged Thursday after new data on the labor market suggested that the economy may not be headed into the downward spiral that traders feared. First-time claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to 233,000 from the prior week’s upwardly revised total of 250,000, according to Department of Labor data released Thursday. “Anything in that range tends to suggest a fairly healthy labor market,” wrote economist Joseph Brusuelas on X Thursday morning. Weekly jobless claims data can be highly volatile and is frequently revised. Fears of a downturnThe latest jobs numbers come as Wall Street attempts to bounce back from a market plunge that was mostly triggered by the weaker-than-expected July jobs report.

CNN —Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers. Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. Neither the Ukrainian military nor the government in Kyiv has publicly commented on the operation. A Russian military blogger Rybar reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border.

The jobs report said the US economy added 114,000 jobs in July, far fewer than the 176,000 jobs that economists expected. The weakness of the jobs report tipped the worry scale and sent markets into meltdown mode. Outside the July jobs report, there were plenty of signs the labor market was cooling off. If that seems confusing, here's the only thing you really need to know: The July jobs report triggered the Sahm rule. Nobody should be losing a ton of sleep over the state of the labor market or over the economy overall.

CNN —Scientists studying squaretail grouper have found that the increasing presence of fishermen in the water is changing their behavior from flirty to flighty. This coincides with a shift from hook and line fishing from boats to fishers spearfishing while in the water, she said. Humans have responded to this behavior by targeting these events in order to catch more fish, which have started to engage less in courting behavior out of fear. In many populations, these spawning events are the only time that groupers will mate, she added.
