China's northern cities brace for more torrid heat
  + stars: | 2023-07-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
[1/3] A man pulls a cart carrying jugs of water amid the orange alert for heatwave, at a hutong alley in Beijing, China July 5, 2023. The torrid heat has gripped China for several weeks, pushing local governments to ask residents and businesses to curb the usage of electricity. It is expected that the maximum temperature in most areas of the city will rise above 40 degrees Celsius, according to the state-backed Beijing Daily. The meteorological observatory in northern Hebei province also issued a red alert, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach 40-43 Celsius on Thursday. China's Meteorological bureau issued orange alerts, the second highest alert, in mostly northern China with temperatures expected to hit 40 degree Celsius and above.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Kevin BucklandU.S. policymakers are stealing the spotlight in the markets today, after the Fed cemented its hawkish credentials overnight and Janet Yellen started a trip to China just as Beijing restricts chip-making metal exports. APAC investors clearly took notice, sending stocks sliding and bond yields higher in a signal that Europe should brace for the same. The key takeaway from minutes of the Fed's June meeting overnight is that the unanimous decision to hold wasn't so unanimous after all, with the hawks just biding their time. Traders see a July hike as pretty much assured, but it's still a coin toss whether there will be another after that. Britain will report construction PMIs for June later in the day, as will Germany, which also has factory order figures for May on the release schedule.

Shares in some Chinese metals companies rallied for a second session, with investors betting that higher prices on gallium and germanium, which Beijing's export restrictions target, could boost revenues. Germanium is used in high-speed computer chips, plastics, and in military applications such as night-vision devices as well as satellite imagery sensors. China is the world's biggest producer of rare earths, a group of metals used in EVs and military equipment. CURBS ON EXPORTS TO CHINAWashington is considering new restrictions on the shipment of high-tech microchips to China, following a series of curbs over the past few years. China's germanium ingot was priced at 9,150 yuan per kg on Tuesday, also flat on the day and on the week, Refinitiv data showed.

Scammers are likely to target student loan borrowers after the Supreme Court struck down the Biden administration's debt forgiveness plan Friday and as loan repayments are poised to restart in the fall, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Scammers often "take advantage of confusion around big news like this," the FTC said in a consumer alert issued Saturday. More from Personal Finance:Biden administration gives student loan holders payment leewaySteps student borrowers should take after Supreme Court rulingWhat Supreme Court student loan ruling could mean for economyThe Biden administration forgiveness plan would have erased up to $20,000 of federal student loans for tens of millions of borrowers. Now, they and other borrowers must brace for monthly loan payments to restart in October, after more than three years of an interest-free pause. President Joe Biden said Friday after the Supreme Court's ruling that his administration would pursue another way to deliver debt forgiveness.

July 3 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. Purchasing managers index (PMI) reports on Monday from across the Asia-Pacific region, including China, India, South Korea and Australia, will give the first glimpse into private sector services and factory activity in June. Monday's Asian economic calendar is dominated by a raft of manufacturing PMIs including China's, Indonesian inflation, Japan's 'tankan' business sentiment survey for the second quarter, and Australian housing. China's Caixin manufacturing PMI is expected to fall to 50.2 from 50.9, signaling a slowdown in factory sector growth almost the point of stagnation. The official PMI, expected to show a third month of contraction, will be released on Friday.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake had just struck Rio Dell, California, upending homes and lives for the community of 3,400 people near Oregon. “It’s a gamble to not have it,” Rio Dell City Manager Kyle Knopp said. A whopping 90% of homes in California aren’t covered by earthquake insurance, according to Glenn Pomeroy, CEO of the California Earthquake Authority, a nonprofit quake insurer established by the state. Gavin Newsom proclaimed an emergency for Humboldt County, where Rio Dell is located, in part to help local governments access services. Despite seeing how costly earthquake damage can be, she doubts she’ll buy earthquake insurance for her next home.

Outdoor power equipment drives just a small fraction of the retailers' sales, said Zack Fadem, an analyst for Wells Fargo. Yet several more recent factors have increased interest in electric power for landscaping. Tractor Supply , a home improvement player that tends to be in rural areas, has been slower to add battery-powered outdoor equipment. At TPC Sawgrass in Florida, the landscaping crew has tried out an autonomous battery-powered mower and uses some electric leaf blowers.

The job of family offices, investment firms tasked with managing the fortunes of the ultra-rich, has never been about getting massive returns. Which is why Hayley Cuccinello's story on family offices investing in artificial intelligence is so fascinating. Hayley spoke to executives at family offices about how they're navigating the modern-day gold rush that is AI investing. Of course, a lot of those deals never materialized and most family offices have now largely eschewed digital currencies altogether. The difference is family offices have largely gotten in on AI long before the bandwagon arrived, Hayley reports.

On the third day of 100-degree temperatures last week, locked without air-conditioning in a Texas prison north of Houston, Joseph Martire said he began to feel overwhelmed. An inmate for nearly 16 years, Mr. Martire was expecting to be released in a few weeks. But it was so hot that day, he recalled, that he wondered if he would make it that long. “They kept me there for two hours, drinking ice water, salt water, taking my temperature, making sure I was still alive,” he said. The weekslong June heat wave scorching Texas has been particularly brutal and dangerous inside the state’s sprawling prison system, where a majority of those incarcerated, and the guards who watch over them, have been struggling without air-conditioning.

Passengers aboard a Delta flight had to disembark using the jet slide Wednesday after their plane landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport without part of its landing gear extended. An inflatable slide extends from a door of the plane and firefighters appear to be helping passengers disembark on the slide. "While this is a rare occurrence, Delta flight crews train extensively to safely manage through many scenarios and flight 1092 landed safely without reported injuries." Controllers saw that the nose landing gear doors were open, but the gear hadn't descended and the pilots landed the plane without the nose gear. Less than four hours after the landing, Skotarczak, the passenger from Buffalo, was at work, but only with his cellphone and a bottle of water.

One report, written by the Federal Reserve's own economists, left me with not exactly an upbeat outlook. Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell testifies during a House Committee on Financial Services hearing, Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Capitol Hill in Washington. That is, more than a third of companies could default in the coming months, thanks to tightening monetary policy. Basically, they are predicting that companies feel pain in times of policy tightening, especially those with weaker balance sheets to begin with. Investors should monitor these bearish signals to stay ahead of a potential sell-off in the stock market.

Hydropower IPO tests appetite for weather risks

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A jumbo hydropower listing may define how investors assess extreme weather risks. Over the last decade, hydropower has been the largest source of clean energy, International Energy Agency data shows. At the top of the range it would raise up to 2 billion euros and be Europe’s largest IPO so far this year. Alarmingly, Hidroelectrica’s gross hydropower generation fell about 15% last year from its annual average of 15.9 terawatt-hours in the decade to 2022. The IPO carries a price range of between 94 Romanian lei and 112 lei (18.95 euros and 22.58 euros) per share, giving the company a potential market capitalisation of 42.3 billion lei to 50.4 billion lei (8.53 billion euros to 10.16 billion euros), Hidroelectrica said in its prospectus.

(He has had long-term romantic relationships with the female comics Katherine Ryan and more recently, Hannah Einbinder, though they broke up a month ago.) They talked comedy and Brace later asked him if he could give him notes. Brace was especially alert to the dramaturgy of a show, insisting on cutting jokes that worked if they weren’t worth the lost momentum. If Edelman riffed too much, Brace told him: You’re on the jazz tonight. An American flag hangs behind traders working on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on October 11, 2019 in New York City. Morgan Stanley, for example, has adopted a downbeat view for the months ahead. Falling prices, Morgan Stanley explained, can cut into revenue growth and weigh on earnings. "This should begin to hit asset prices by the end of this month and carry into the fall," Morgan Stanley strategists said. To Stockton, the S&P 500 could soon trade as high as 4,510, or about 3% higher than current levels.

If the S&P 500 can avoid a pullback, it could make a push toward its all-time high. Investors who weren't ready for the remarkable stock market rally of the last three months may not have completely missed out yet, according to several strategists Insider recently spoke with. While some top investing minds think this market rally isn't trustworthy, others are confident that the path of least resistance for US stocks is higher. He believes the S&P 500 is more likely to hit new highs in early 2024 than retest its Fall low of about 3,500. The S&P 500 is trading at roughly 19.2x forward earnings, he said, adding that equal-weighted funds have a forward earning ratio of about 15.5x.

Nearly two weeks after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southeastern Ukraine, the floodwaters are receding, but local officials are grappling with a new concern: the potential for outbreaks from waterborne disease. On Saturday, local officials in Kherson and Mykolaiv, the two regions most affected by the flooding on the Dnipro River unleashed when the dam collapsed, outlined plans to ensure safe drinking water. And doctors in hospitals across those regions have been warned to prepare for the potential for an outbreak of disease. Hundreds of residential areas are still underwater, including some under Russian occupation. International humanitarian organizations have shared concerns about widespread pollution and the potential for illness, but the Ukrainian health authorities maintain that they are vigilantly monitoring for any signs of a disease outbreak.

OTTAWA, June 16 (Reuters) - Flags flew lowered in the Canadian province of Manitoba on Friday and relatives braced for bad news after 15 mainly elderly people died in one of the country's worst recent road crashes. "It's a terrible, terrible thing that occurred, and our thoughts go out to the families that have been absolutely devastated by this news," he told reporters in Montreal. Ron Bretecher, whose parents were on the bus, told reporters his mother had survived the crash but his father was still unaccounted for.
