Vice President Kamala Harris still has a wide lead over former President Donald Trump among Black voters in battleground states, according to a new poll, which shows a key slice of undecided Black voters still poised to make a decision about the presidential election. The findings, from a Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion poll of 981 likely Black voters in battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — show that 84% of likely Black voters will support Harris in November and 8% say they’ll support Trump. While an overwhelming majority of Black voters overall plan to support Harris, the data shows a small shift among independents from a month ago. Black voters support Harris by large margins across all age groups, but her margin among young voters (63 points) is much smaller than her margin among older voters (82 points). Among undecided Black voters, 19% said the economy is the most important issue to their vote, followed by inflation/cost of living (14%).

Texas is preparing to put a man to death Thursday in what would be the nation’s first execution involving a case of “shaken baby syndrome,” a diagnosis that has been re-evaluated in more recent years, leading to the overturning of similar convictions. Prosecutors argued that Nikki must have been shaken to death because she had been diagnosed with “the triad” — a swollen and bleeding brain and retinal hemorrhaging — symptoms once believed to be indisputable evidence of shaken baby syndrome. In 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed the name of shaken baby syndrome to the more broadly defined “abusive head trauma” to include injuries caused by mechanisms other than shaking alone. It is now medical consensus that other medical conditions, including infections, accidental trauma and pre-existing illnesses, can also cause the symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Hundreds of possible shaken baby and abusive head trauma cases are reported to hospitals in the U.S. every year, according to a nonprofit advocacy group.

BERLIN — President Joe Biden is leaving Washington for Germany on Thursday morning in what will be one of the last opportunities to outline his vision for foreign policy before the election next month. After landing in Berlin, Biden will be greeted with full military honors Friday before receiving the country's highest Order of Merit from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, his office said. After years of refusing U.S. prodding to trade the Russian, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris separately convinced Scholz earlier this year. On Wednesday, Biden announced a $425 million aid package for Ukraine that includes air-to-ground munitions and armored vehicles, and promised more defense systems and supplies in the months to come. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has reached a historic $880 million settlement over hundreds of child sex abuse claims. The agreement in principle announced Wednesday settles 1,354 child sexual abuse claims, the plaintiffs’ attorney said in a news release. It is the largest single child sex abuse settlement with a Catholic archdiocese. In 2007, the archdiocese settled child sex abuse lawsuits with 500 victims for $660 million. Felix Herrera Garcia, 35, of the Bronx, was also sentenced to five years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Garcia pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death, and possession with intent to distribute narcotics resulting in death. Herrera Garcia was captured in Mexico after fleeing the country, authorities said. Between October 2022 through September 2023 Herrera Garcia and other defendants conspired to sell drugs out of the daycare, prosecutors said. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in Wednesday's statement that Herrera Garcia recklessly placed babies at risk of fentanyl exposure.

Colt Gray, 14, was indicted on a total of 55 counts, including four counts of felony and malice murder, plus aggravated assault and cruelty to children. His father, Colin Gray, was indicted on 29 counts, including two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and multiple counts of second-degree cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Last month, Colt Gray was arraigned on four counts of felony murder, and Colin Gray was arraigned on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children.
