Ahead of the High Holidays that begin this week, a network of Jewish security experts and religious leaders hosted several webinars to help prepare for the season. Among the topics: How to respond to an “active threat” targeting the Jewish community, and how to stop severe bleeding. Over recent years — in the face of increased antisemitic threats and violence — the season also is a time of heightened vigilance. “The High Holidays are about renewal — about trying to build a better world,” said Rabbi Noah Farkas, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. Earlier this month, the Orthodox Union, the largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, announced a partnership with the Community Security Service, a leading Jewish security organization, to encourage more Orthodox congregation members to volunteer for security training.

After spending too much time and money because I'd rather avoid tough conversations, I finally learned the importance of "firing fast." The concept of "hire slow, fire fast" has been popularized by startup culture, referring to the agility required to grow a company in a competitive environment. In our first two years, we made five wrong hires that ended up costing $450K because we didn't "fire fast." The most expensive thing about wrong hires is not money — it's time (and sadly sometimes friendships, as mentioned above). While not all costs can be avoided — because you don't know what you don't know — they can be mitigated by "firing fast."

While live-in landlords are far from a novel concept, the pandemic-era fever around passive income and real-estate investing has sparked a rise in the popularity of house hacking. While Turner's initial strategy emphasized small multifamily buildings, some house hackers applied the concept to single-family homes. In 2019, he published a book called "The House Hacking Strategy: How to Use Your Home to Achieve Financial Freedom." And I think house hacking is one obvious way to eliminate, or at least drastically reduce, what likely is your largest expense." "Yeah, it's called 'house hacking," the owner and roommate, also played by Jarman, who has 4 million followers, replies.

They include eight chief executives of the 11 states that formed the Confederate States of America, which seceded and waged war to preserve slavery. Although white people enslaved Black people in Northern states in early America, by the eve of the Civil War, slavery was almost entirely a Southern enterprise. South Carolina, where the Civil War began, illustrates the familial ties between lawmakers and the nation’s history of slavery. Each of the seven white lawmakers who served in the 117th Congress is a direct descendant of a slaveholder, Reuters found. In researching America’s political elite, Reuters found names – almost always just a first name – of 712 people enslaved by the ancestors of the political elite.

As the landscape of market leaders shifts, we forecast that the US point-of-sale (POS) terminal installed base will grow from 17.3 million this year to 20.2 million in 2026, largely due to providers upgrading technology. Another strong contender to keep an eye on is mobile POS (mPOS). We project that the US mPOS market will grow at a 14.1% three-year compound annual growth rate through 2026, making up 47.2% of the US terminal market that year. As a result, providers are more focused than ever to create a one-stop shop that meets business needs beyond payments. Innovation is at the forefront of POS as the merchant and consumer needs for all-in-one solutions mount.
Ongoing ecommerce growth is pushing payment providers to make efficient and inexpensive digital payment solutions their top priority despite the ever-changing post-pandemic landscape. By the end of 2026, brick-and-mortar will still account for $4 in $5 spent in retail—making it a critical investment for payment providers despite being less flashy than ecommerce and emerging digital channels. In order to keep shoppers in-store, merchants must broaden their accepted payment methods by allowing proximity mobile payments; contactless cards; buy now, pay later; and account-to-account payment options. As a result of this uptick, payment providers must invest in their mobile shopping and buying experience. Curious to learn more about payment channels and types of transactions?
Although debit still reigns supreme, with consumer preferences moving toward digital, cash and checks will continue to be displaced in the US. But even though cash usage is dwindling, the Federal Reserve reports that 79% of US adults still hold cash daily. Cash and check usage may be dwindling, but debit and credit cards are seeing upticks among economic uncertainty. As consumers become more concerned about the economy and job security while also steadily adopting new digital solutions, we are seeing shifts away from traditional payment methods.
