Independence Day in Ukraine commemorates the country’s 1991 break from the Soviet Union, but also increasingly serves as a rallying point for Ukrainians to assert their identity and aspirations. Ukraine declared independence on Aug. 24, 1991, a few days after communist hard-liners tried to depose the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and reverse his efforts to liberalize the Soviet Union. Celebrations of Independence Day have often featured military parades and festive crowds wearing vyshyvankas, the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts. But Mr. Szporluk, the historian, said that Ukrainians see Independence Day not so much as a day of remembrance as one to reassert their commitment to democracy and sovereignty. Klitschko, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said that debris had fallen in the central Solomianskyi district and that a non-residential building had been damaged. Klitschko said that debris had also fallen in the Svyatoshyn district, further west, and that a tree had caught fire. Air raid alerts were lifted for the capital, the surrounding Kyiv region and most other parts of the country.

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., raised $6.1 million for his presidential campaign in the second quarter, a campaign spokesperson said. It marks Scott's first financial report since jumping into the 2024 presidential race with an exploratory committee in early April. The Scott campaign got off to a quick-spending start because it transferred a sizable sum from his Senate account to fund his presidential bid. The campaign spokesperson said Scott had $21 million cash on hand at the end of June, which is down slightly from the nearly $22 million that Scott had in his Senate account at the end of March. Ron DeSantis' campaign announced raising $20 million as he jumped into the race last quarter.
