CNN —Twelve people have been found dead at a ski resort in the former Soviet country of Georgia, police said. The bodies of 11 Indian nationals and one Georgian citizen were discovered on the second floor above an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, the largest ski resort in the country, local police said in a statement issued Saturday. The 12 people all worked in the building where their bodies were found, the statement added. More than 300,000 international travelers visited the Gudauri resort in 2023, according to a local consulting firm. The resort’s parking lot sits at 7,200 feet (2,195 meters) – higher than the tops of many slopes in the Alps.

Hiring, educating, and housing refugees and asylum seekers is the "next big challenge" for businesses, according to a longtime leadership professor and UNICEF vice president. Low- and middle-income countries host 75% of the world's refugees, and around two-thirds of refugees live in poverty, according to the European Commission. "The corporate world is missing the next big challenge. We've grabbed it, but migration is the next big thing. "If somebody has a purpose that drives their thinking and therefore their action, it'll drive your spending, it'll drive your time, it'll drive your emotional commitments.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Pastor Dmytro Bodyu said the Russians kept telling him they knew he was an American spy, specifically, a CIA agent paid by the US government to spread anti-Russian propaganda in occupied Ukraine. Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has jailed dozens of Ukrainian faith leaders in occupied areas, according to Ukrainian prosecutors. In the territories occupied after February 2022, Russian tactics became bloodier and more violent,” he said. Ukraine created its own independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2018, splitting from the Moscow-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). ‘American spies’Moscow has been cracking down on all non-Russian churches in occupied Ukraine, but Protestant and Evangelical groups have often been among the first to be banned.

CNN —Thousands of ancient butchered human bones found in a deep shaft in southwest England have pointed archaeologists to a grim chapter of British prehistory that occurred during the Early Bronze Age. There, researchers unearthed piles of buried human bones, mixed in with cattle bones, that told the story of mass violence striking an ancient community. What’s more, the extreme manner in which the remains were handled is beyond what Schulting and his colleagues have seen from remains of ancient animals who were butchered. “The location itself may be the common denominator; the natural shaft and large underlying cave system inviting comparisons with a portal to the underworld,” the study authors wrote. The researchers don’t believe the people were killed as food due to starvation, given the abundant amount of cattle bones found mixed in with the human bones.

Israel has appealed the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as the official death toll in Gaza nears 45,000, according to Palestinian health authorites. Oren Marmorstein, a spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed to NBC News on Sunday that Israel had filed the appeal against the ICC arrest warrants. In Gaza, Israel bombed clusters of houses and set some ablaze in three towns, also attacking Khalil Aweida, a school-turned-shelter, before storming it and ordering displaced families to head towards Gaza City, according to Reuters, citing medics and residents. A Palestinian man carries a child killed by an Israeli airstrike through a cemetery in Deir el-Balah on Sunday. Since then, nearly 45,000 people have been killed in Gaza, most of them women and children, while over 105,000 people have been injured, and many victims remain buried under rubble.

“Changing the law will give parents the right to sell their young daughters,” Batta said in a telephone interview last month. UNICEF reported in April 2023 that 28% of girls are married before the legal age of 18, although under Iraqi law, girls as young as 15 can be married with the consent of a judge and their parents. As well as setting the age of marriage, it addressed child custody, inheritances and alimony payments focused on the welfare of both children and women. As a result, some lawmakers and rights groups are concerned that this would pave the way for legalizing and expanding child marriage in the country. “Changing the law will lead many underage girls to face circumstances similar to what I went through,” she said.

Oftentimes, law enforcement designates these individuals as voluntary missing persons, McCabe said. This month, Kobayashi was declared a voluntary missing person after Los Angeles police say she traveled to the US-Mexico border and crossed into Mexico alone. SometimesLocal law enforcement agencies across the country are responsible for investigating missing persons cases, according to McCabe. Missing persons investigations often involve forensic analysis, gathering cell phone data and requesting search warrants, he said. DAMASCUS, Syria — For more than a decade, Syria was synonymous with war, brutality and the family dynasty visiting this violence on its own people. It was only on Sunday that President Bashar al-Assad fled the country as rebels entered Damascus. Syrians have since torn down statues of Assad and ripped back the veil from his murderous regime. Meanwhile, questions hang over Syria’s future, guided by a former Al Qaeda offshoot that says it has moderated. But for the time being at least, the primary emotion for many in Syria is one of disbelieving joy.

CNN —Georgian lawmakers voted in a far-right former soccer star as the country’s next president on Saturday, amid mounting popular anger over the government’s halt to EU accession talks. Mikheil Kavelashvili, 53, is a former MP for the ruling Georgian Dream party and played for the English soccer team Manchester City during the 1990s. It is not clear how Georgian Dream will respond if Zourabichvili refuses to leave office. President Salome Zourabichvili walks outside the parliament building as deputies vote to elect a new president. Georgian Dream – already 12 years in office – claimed victory, but observers say the vote was neither free nor fair.

An Arizona man was arrested this week for allegedly producing child sex abuse materials, in which he coerced minors to self-mutilate, as part of his efforts with online terror groups, federal prosecutors said. Prosecutors allege Martin is a member of the violent terror networks known as 764 and CVLT. The mutilation acts are then photographed, video recorded or streamed online and shared with other members of the groups, prosecutors said. Martin, who claimed online he was the owner of the online terror groups, taught other members how to extort victims and proclaiming himself as the “king of extortion,” prosecutors said. In September 2022, Martin produced child sex abuse material on Discord, an online chat and gaming platform, prosecutors said.

UnitedHealth Group's CEO eulogized his slain colleague, Brian Thompson, in a New York Times op-ed. Thompson's shooting sparked a nationwide debate about the state of the health insurance industry. The head of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, is responding to the "vitriol" that's been lodged — both on- and offline — against the health insurance industry and its workers. He then condemned the mounting rhetoric that he said has glorified violence against health insurance workers. Others criticized the for-profit health insurance system as a whole, with some acknowledging that businesses are meant to make a profit and others advocating for nonprofit healthcare.

Investigators say they have mounting evidence against Luigi Mangione, 26, connecting him to the assassination of Brian Thompson on December 4. Mangione was denied bail on Tuesday and is fighting his extradition to New York, where he faces five charges, including second-degree murder, in Thompson’s killing. If convicted of second-degree murder, Mangione faces at least 15 years to life in prison, while a first-degree murder charge carries a minimum of 20 years to life in prison. A second-degree murder charge – but not first-degree murder – allows the defendant an “affirmative defense,” which is essentially a “Yes, but” argument to lessen the seriousness of the charge to first-degree manslaughter, according to Shapiro. Mangione’s arrest is only the first piece of the case against him, according to Ken Corey, former NYPD chief of department.
