An aide to the Hungarian PM was criticized after suggesting Hungary wouldn't have resisted a Russian invasion. He referred back to a 1956 uprising in Budapest, which the Soviet Union brutally repressed. He said it was "irresponsible" to resist, citing the number of dead in the Ukraine war. He said this was because Hungary had tried and failed to resist the Soviet Union in 1956. Viktor Orbán is Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ally in the European Union, a position that has put him strongly out of favor in the bloc.

In another twist of his extreme rhetoric, Trump also seems to be seeking scapegoats should he lose the election in just over 40 days. Trump may hold meetings with world leaders that his campaign does not announce in advance, explained sources close to the campaign. “While President Biden will be there, he will be there as a lame duck. Since leaving office, Trump has held regular conversations with foreign leaders. Foreign leaders are among the most ardent consumers of American political news, looking for clues of what the future may hold through polls, private conversations and diplomatic information gathering. PHILADELPHIA — Former President Donald Trump found out Tuesday night that he's got a much tougher rival on his hands now. Harris, eager to portray herself as different from both Trump and Biden, reminded him that Biden won't be on the ballot. Trump said Harris has had 3½ years to make the changes she promises to make and argued the Biden-Harris administration squandered progress Trump gave them. Trump and Harris also clashed over the 2020 election, with Trump again falsely claiming that he won. Throughout the debate, Harris needled Trump in ways that undermined his self-image as a popular, strong leader whom American’s adversaries fear.

Now, the Justice Department is alleging that some of the biggest stars in right-wing social media were, unwittingly, part of a sinister Russian operation to influence the 2024 US election. What is Tenet Media? “Overt shilling”The Russians also pushed Tenet to promote videos that were going viral on social media, according to the indictment. Tenet Media has not responded to requests for comment and stopped posting content on Wednesday. After the 2016 US presidential election, congressional and federal investigations showed Moscow had successfully co-opted unwitting Americans to stage protests, run social media accounts and host events at its behest.

New York CNN —The arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France over the weekend has thrust the popular messaging service and its enigmatic founderinto the spotlight. Durov’s arrest comes as the app has faced growing scrutiny for its use by terrorist groups and far-right extremists. Telegram is an encrypted messaging service that was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother, Nikolai. And earlier this month, the messaging app began actively removing calls to violence from the platform following reports that the app was being used to organize far-right, anti-immigrant riots in the United Kingdom. In addition to running Telegram, Durov has become something of an online influencer, sharing images on Instagram of his world travels (and, often, shirtless photos).

Serbia’s president Sunday accused demonstrators who opposed a lithium mining project in the Balkan country of being part of a Western-backed “hybrid” warfare against his government and vowed to take strong legal action against those protesters who have blocked railway and road traffic in the capital a day earlier. Some of the protesters later blocked tracks at two railway stations in the city, and briefly stopped traffic on a major highway. Protestors block railroad tracks of Belgrade's main railway station to protest against Serbia's government plan to reboot a lithium mine on August 10, 2024. Saturday’s demonstration came after weeks of protests in dozens of cities throughout Serbia against a government plan to allow lithium mining in a lush farming valley in the west of the country. Vučić said Sunday there will be no lithium mining in the next two years while all the risks are being investigated, in an apparent attempt to pacify critics.

CNN —Belarus sent military reinforcements to its border with Ukraine Saturday after it said several Ukrainian drones crossed its airspace and were intercepted by the country’s air defenses on Friday, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said in a statement. “We suspect these are attack drones,” Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko said during a separate briefing Saturday. More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.

The effort took on extra urgency in March 2023, when the Russians arrested Gershkovich, a senior administration official said. CNN —A large-scale prisoner swap between the US and Russia is under way, according to a source familiar, and it is expected to include Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan and a number of Americans. The parties have agreed to a prisoner transfer and the prisoners are expected to be in the care of US officials, according to a senior administration official. The deal would end a nightmare that lasted more than five years for Whelan and more than a year for Gershkovich. The former US Marine was sentenced to 16 years in prison on espionage charges he vehemently denies. In April of that year, Moscow exchanged former US Marine Trevor Reed for Russian citizen and convicted drug trafficker Konstantin Yaroshenko.

The Russian officials took the proposal back to Moscow. It was a remarkably swift conclusion to years of painstaking negotiations between the US and more than half a dozen countries. Key to the deal was President Biden’s ability to persuade German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to release Krasikov, the Russian prisoner most keenly sought by Putin. Officials worked quietly throughout this year to get the German government to agree to release Krasikov — including entreaties from both Biden and Harris. President Biden sent a letter to Scholz in April, and the Germans at last agreed to release Krasikov in early June.

Among those headed back to Russia are convicted hackers and several Russian nationals detained in the West for spying. And the biggest prize for Russia was the return of Vadim Krasikov, a convicted hitman whose release had been publicly sought by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Anna Chapman, one of 10 Russian sleeper agents deported from the US in a 2010 prisoner swap, was also feted on her return to Russia. Britain blamed the poisoning on Russia; Russia has consistently denied involvement, although Putin referred to Skripal as a “scumbag” and a “traitor,” his contempt suggesting that Skripal had gotten his just desserts. The release of Russians in the swap means that Russia’s political climate is no less repressive.
