[1/2] An aerial view shows burnt trees near a river in The Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, in Pocone, Mato Grosso state, Brazil, August 28, 2020. The 2,387 fires recorded by Inpe in early November is already more than double October's figure and more than half of the total fires seen this year so far. Fires have more than tripled in the Pantanal compared with 2022, which was mild compared with the two previous years. Weather experts point to the El Nino phenomenon, aggravated by climate change, as being behind the sharp increase in fires. "There was sporadic rainfall at the end of October, but two or three days after it stopped, the fires came back," he added.

Senior State Department officials spoke to CNN about what happened on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive details. The Iranians even threatened not to include all five of the Americans in the release unless the US did more, the officials told CNN. “We held our line and the Iranians backed down and we made it work,” a senior State Department official said. But the Qatari officials, in a smooth diplomatic maneuver, countered that they would be offended if everyone did not eat while on board the Qatari plane and an agonizing final delay was avoided. ET, the US plane carrying the seven Americans, Carstens, Paley and other US officials departed Doha en route to the US.

In Louisville, Ky., an influx of Cuban immigrants is offsetting a local population decline and bringing new rhythms to the city. Aug. 26, 2023At the first beats of “La Vida es un Carnaval” on a recent morning, several octogenarians in a senior center abandoned their dominoes, coloring books and crossword puzzles, and showed off their salsa moves. “Uno, dos, tres,” said their instructor, Selen Wilson Guerra, as she warmed them up for class. This was not Havana, or even Little Havana in Miami. It was Louisville, a city best known for bourbon, the Kentucky Derby and Muhammad Ali.

CNN —Vatican investigators looking into sexual abuse allegations at a Roman Catholic society in Peru have completed the first stage of their audit and will issue a report in the coming months, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told CNN Friday. SCV said its members, who were summoned by the Vatican’s envoys, have “collaborated diligently” and reiterated its commitment to working with the Vatican. Peruvian prosecutors said in the case of sexual abuse, none of the alleged victims came forward and the crime fell under the statute of limitations. A criminal case against Figari and other SCV members, alleging kidnapping, serious psychological injuries, and illicit association to commit a crime, is still ongoing. SCV said in 2017 Figari had been removed from the community, banned from contacting members, and prohibited by Vatican authorities from returning to Peru.

Mendoza, ArgentinaWhile it’s summer in the United States, it’s winter in Argentina, when there are typically fewer crowds. Located in a suburb of Mendoza, the hotel is nestled between the Andes and the city of Mendoza, and has just seven suites. Each suite also has a living room, a terrace and a wine fridge (some also have dry saunas). There are wine tastings, of course, as well as blending classes where you can combine different varietals to create your own wine. Here, wine isn’t just for drinking: You can try a spa treatment like the body hydration wrap with red wine cream and raisins.

Vida Blue Was a Baseball Comet

Tony La Russa knew that much, because he’d been there. La Russa was destined for a storied career as a major league manager, but on the field he was a bonus baby who couldn’t really hit. “There are minor leaguers, there are big leaguers, and then there’s that higher league of All-Stars and Hall of Famers,” La Russa, 78, said by phone on Monday. “And that was Vida, and he was 20 years old.”By the end of that 1970 season, in the majors for good with the Oakland Athletics, Vida Blue would throw a no-hitter. His next season would be a baseball comet, a wonder in both majesty and brevity, the kind of year people talk about forever, especially in moments of loss.
Vida Blue, who as a rookie with the Oakland Athletics in 1971 threw an unhittable fastball and became baseball’s hottest player, died on Saturday. The Athletics announced his death but did not say where Blue died or provide the cause. Vida (pronounced VYE-da) Blue was one of the stars of an Athletics team that won the World Series three straight years, from 1972 to 1974. After losing on opening day to the Washington Senators in 1971, Blue, a lefty, reeled off eight wins in a row. By the summer, he was leading baseball in not just shutouts but also wins, strikeouts, complete games and earned-run average.
CEO David Mowry and activist investor J. Daniel Plants, who has served on the board for eight years, were terminated for alleged violations of their employment contracts, Cutera said. RTW Investments, Cutera's second biggest investor with a 9.3% stake, called on the company to reinstate Mowry and to hold a special meeting. Market reaction to Mowry's removal "demonstrates the need for the Special Meeting and the lack of confidence in the board," RTW said in a statement. Top Cutera executives, including the chief financial officer, on Tuesday supported Mowry and Plants, arguing the men work well together and had earned their trust. The California-based company, which sells devices including laser treatments for tattoo removal and acne, appointed independent board member Sheila Hopkins as interim CEO.
An effort to legalize marijuana in Mexico has stalled after several years of debate by lawmakers. But Mexican cartels and independent growers are still preparing to cater to a new domestic market.
