Where Old Vegas is still alive today

MuseumsMuseums are obvious celebrations of the past, and in Las Vegas, these two museums have direct links to the Vegas of old. At the Neon Museum, Old Vegas is showcased in the form of neon signs. Other attractionsSeveral other sights and destinations around Las Vegas keep the city’s past alive in this modern age. At one point every casino in Las Vegas had a machine like this one; today this is the only coin-operated iteration left. Finally, the most recognizable throwback to Old Vegas might be the neon “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

Australian authorities urge hundreds to flee uncontained bushfire
  + stars: | 2024-02-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A bushfire in Australia's Victoria state raged out of control on Saturday, with authorities issuing a fresh evacuation alert at the highest danger rating for hundreds of residents in the state's west. The Australian Broadcasting Corp reported on Saturday that three homes and several outbuildings had been destroyed this week in Victoria's bushfire emergency. Around 1,000 firefighters supported by more than 50 aircraft have battled the fires since they started. Australia is currently in the grips of an El Nino weather pattern, which is typically associated with extreme phenomena such as wildfires, cyclones and droughts. The last two bushfire seasons in Australia have been subdued compared with the 2019-2020 "Black Summer" when bushfires destroyed an area the size of Turkey and killed 33 people and 3 billion animals.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A conservative group has told a Georgia judge that it doesn't have evidence to support its claims of illegal ballot stuffing during the the 2020 general election and a runoff two months later. In their written response, attorneys for True the Vote said the group had no names or other documentary evidence to share. The election board subpoenaed True the Vote to provide evidence that would assist it in investigating the group's ballot trafficking allegations. She and another member of the group were briefly jailed in 2022 for contempt for not complying with a court order to provide information in a defamation lawsuit. In addition to names, the judge ordered True the Vote to provide copies of any confidentiality agreements it had with sources.

The state Supreme Court's brief order Tuesday shutting down the suit said legislators have fulfilled promises of annual increases in aid to the state's 286 local school districts as outlined in a 2019 law. But closing the case gives the Legislature more leeway on school funding issues in the short term. Educators who feel legislators aren't providing enough money or distributing it fairly enough were able to take their complaints directly to the state Supreme Court while the case was open. Four school districts sued the state in 2010, and the Supreme Court issued seven rulings from 2010 to 2019. The first six told lawmakers that they needed to increase spending or distribute the money more fairly or both.

LONDON (AP) — Actor Ian Lavender, who played a hapless Home Guard soldier in the classic British sitcom “Dad’s Army,” has died, his agent said Monday. Agent Hilary Gagan said Lavender had been ill for some time and died with his wife and sons at his side. Lavender was the last surviving main cast member of “Dad’s Army,” about a ragtag volunteer unit assembled to defend their seaside English town from potential Nazi invasion during World War II. Originally broadcast between 1968 and 1977, it attracted as many as 18 million viewers an episode -- a third of the British population -- and remains perennially popular in reruns. REUTERS/David Swanson/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 24 (Reuters) - Canceled offshore wind projects, imperiled solar factories, fading demand for electric vehicles. A year after passage of the largest climate change legislation in U.S. history, meant to touch off a boom in American clean energy development, economic realities are fraying President Joe Biden’s agenda. Clean energy experts interviewed by Reuters say the mounting setbacks will make the United States' ambitious targets to decarbonize by mid-century even harder to reach. Solar energy facilities account for two thirds of those delays due in part to U.S. import restrictions. "These are the normal ups and downs of clean energy development and deployment," Reicher said.

Wallace hit the ball so purely down the stretch that his final six birdie putts covered a total of 15 feet, 8 inches (nearly 5 meters). Just tried my hardest to get myself back into the tournament," said Wallace, who started the day seven shots behind. Even so, the Norwegian star was in position to capture the season-ending titles on the PGA Tour and the European tour. The European tour record is nine consecutive birdies by James Nitties of Australia in the 2019 Vic Open, and 12 birdies for a round by Raphaël Jacquelin in the 2013 Turkish Open. He had a chance at only the second 59 in European tour history.

Not-for-profit vs. commercialIn London, there are two main theater models: Not-for-profit venues like the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, and The Old Vic, and commercial theater like in the famous West End. Stakes higher in New YorkThe bar for financial success is much lower in London than on Broadway in New York. Budgets for shows in the West End can reach millions while on Broadway in New York, the stakes are even higher. Often producers will run productions in London first and if they are received well, transfer them to New York.

Vietnam's real estate woes: how much worse can they get?
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
HANOI, Oct 26 (Reuters) - A rough year for Vietnam's real estate sector has seen developers miss interest payments on debt, amid a credit crunch spurred by ill-timed government measures, although spillover risk has been limited. Shares of the largest listed developer, Vinhomes (VHM.HM), part of the country's biggest conglomerate, Vingroup (VIC.HM), have fallen 13% this year. In September, the Asian Development Bank warned of potential spillover into banking from irregularities in corporate bonds and real estate markets, although troubled bonds made up just a small portion of total bank credit. While ill-timed government measures, companies' high debt and oversupply are responsible for the sectors' woes in both countries, conditions are different in Vietnam. Vietnam has a less acute situation of oversupply and speculation than China, he added, while real estate's contribution to its economy is also smaller.

Founded in 2017 and starting to make EVs from 2021, VinFast has continuously received financial support from its founder, also Vietnam's richest man. In the short term, however, VinFast's costs are expected to increase for battery R&D and factory operations, the automaker said. After the acquisition, VinFast will acquire all rights and obligations over VinES' assets.

Michael Gambon Arriving At The World Premiere Of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, In Trafalgar Square In Central London. Actor Michael Gambon, known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in multiple "Harry Potter" movies has died, his family said in a statement Thursday. "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon," said the statement issued on behalf of his wife, Anne, and son Fergus by publicist Clair Dobbs. He also won three Olivier Awards and two ensemble cast Screen Actors Guild Awards — for 2001's "Gosford Park" and "The King's Speech." Gambon left school aged 15 to begin an engineering apprenticeship and by 21 he was fully qualified. If fulfilled, Europe would become VinFast's biggest overseas market this year. The company had shipped about 2,100 EVs earlier this year to the United States. Should the EU probe conclude that punitive duties on China-made EVs are warranted, VinFast could find its cars are more competitively priced. VinFast, which is part of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup (VIC.HM), was formed in 2017 and began making EVs in 2021 after dropping its manufacturing of cars with internal combustion engines.

Since its establishment in 2017, VinFast has announced numerous ambitious EV growth plans overseas. VinFast aims to establish its own distributors and may open show rooms in those locations, it said. VinFast is entering the American market at a time when EV pricing is under pressure, led by market leader Tesla and a range of Chinese companies.
