They really just want to disintermediate all of pay TV and drive everyone to themselves. Fresh off a vicarious victory over Disney, Thun is still looking for revenge. For DirecTV, it's skinny bundles or bustDirecTV believes these strict bundling requirements are to blame for putting pay TV on life support. Disney is "completely responsible" for the fall of pay TV, Pachter said, "because they think the only direction that retransmission fees should go is up." Without skinny bundles, pay TV is 'going to die'If skinnier bundles can't solve pay TV's woes, it's unclear what could.

Discovery and Fox from launching their sports streaming service, Venu, according to court filings. The temporary injunction, granted in response to a lawsuit brought by Fubo TV , comes just weeks ahead of the start of the National Football League season. Fubo, an internet TV bundle akin to the traditional pay TV package, alleged in its lawsuit that Venu was anticompetitive and would upend its business. Discovery, Fox and Disney's ESPN announced the formation of the joint venture streaming service in February. On Friday, Fubo said it intends to move forward with its antitrust lawsuit against the companies for their anticompetitive practices.

AdvertisementThose moves show just how rapidly the cable TV business is unraveling. WBD's direct-to-consumer segment still loses money, and its streaming revenue actually declined 6% from last year — even though Max added 3.7 million subscribers. WBD added 3.9 million streaming subscribers abroad last quarter, thanks to its rollout across Europe ahead of the Olympics, which the company broadcasts outside the US. If that service attracts enough cord-cutters, it could help stop the bleeding in WBD's fast-declining pay TV business in a best-case scenario. Join forces with other media firmsAdvertisementAlthough WBD is struggling as the pay-TV business shrinks, the silver lining is that it's not alone.

The big storyFor saleGetty Images; Jenny Chang-Rodriguez/BIOne of Tesla's biggest assets is its willingness to try new things, but its unique approach to sales is also what's giving it headaches. AdvertisementA key issue is Tesla's inability to evolve its sales tactics as the EV market rapidly changes . Business Insider's Grace Kay spoke to more than a dozen current and former employees in Tesla's sales division about how the company has tried to kick-start its sales unit . Not unlike its cars, Tesla's sales approach is innovative compared to the rest of the automotive industry. It's a great strategy when the cars sell themselves — which Teslas did for a while — since you don't need to maintain a traditional sales structure.

Call Don Draper, Venu Sports may have a marketing problemThe Disney , Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery jointly-owned streaming service said Thursday it will launch this fall at $42.99 per month. That's much more expensive than Netflix , Max, Peacock or any other major subscription streaming service. Venu will give consumers access to a bundle of networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, and truTV. They could also get a digital antenna to pair with Venu, but antenna uptake among younger viewers may be a tad oxymoronic.

Venu Sports, the sports streaming joint venture between Disney's ESPN, Warner Bros. The high-end pricing — common in direct-to-consumer sports streaming services — was expected in part so it wouldn't shake up any carriage agreements with traditional pay TV distributors. Live sports remain the highest rated TV programming and are the most costly part of the pay TV bundle. Users who sign up for Venu at $42.99 a month will have access to that entry pricing for 12 months, Venu noted Thursday — signaling there could be price increases ahead. The upcoming bundle will be priced at $16.99 a month with ads, and $29.99 a month ad-free.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.

Discovery and Disney launched a cross-studio bundle of Disney+, Hulu, and Max on Thursday, bringing the services together at a discounted price as the entertainment giants look to scale their streaming businesses. Disney+ with Hulu is also available for $9.99 a month with ads. Disney already offers its own streaming bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ at a bargain rate. Earlier this month, Hallmark announced that it, too, will launch its own standalone streaming platform, Hallmark+, ahead of the holiday season. Disney, WBD and Fox Corp. are also launching the dedicated sports streaming service Venu this fall, which will combine ESPN, TNT, Fox Sports and other assets under a single streaming roof.

Small-caps historically decline before and after the first interest rate cut, Barclays reported. This argues against the growing narrative that the easing cycle will boost small-caps, the bank said. AdvertisementBarclays ResearchTheir finding opposes many prevailing viewpoints on Wall Street, where rising bets of lower interest rates have sent investors piling into the small-cap trade. In part, falling interest rates might help ease debt burdens, but they can also signal a cooling economy — which favors large-cap exposure. Market veteran Ed Yardeni wrote this week that the small-caps trade has no legs, given the sector's lackluster forward earnings, revenue, and profit margins.

CNN —The situation at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT network “sucks, plain and simple,” Charles Barkley bluntly said Thursday. Barkley, who said he feels “so bad for the people” he works with, laid blame at the feet of the “clowns” atop WBD. Wall Street has responded quite negatively to the possibility WBD, which has built a programming slate around the NBA, could lose the rights to air the games. And TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated “Inside the NBA” show. Losing the rights to NBA games could throw aspects of that business partnership into question.

Now that the S & P 500 and most major stock market indexes are at or near historic highs, expect a raft of earnings and year-end price target revisions for the S & P 500 to be coming. First up with an upward revision was Brian Belski at BMO Capital, who Wednesday raised his year-end S & P target to 5,600 from 5,100. The median price target (half above, half below) is 5,200. In an effort to navigate a market that remains highly concentrated under Big Tech's dominance, but also ripe for stock pickers, Barclays has dozens of stocks that share similar characteristics to the tech heavyweights. However, some select Big Tech remained fairly strong throughout the sell-off, with stocks like Alphabet and Apple bucking the downtrend. While Big Tech valuations still appear reasonable to Barclays analyst Venu Krishna, he pointed out that they're "not the only game in town," and suggested investors diversify their portfolios to beat their benchmarks. Yet, market returns, earnings upside, and institutional investor exposure remain highly concentrated in Big Tech," Krishna said in a Tuesday note. Aside from allowing investors to diversify, these stocks come with strong fundamentals based on profitability, balance sheet strength, cash conversion, and growth-adjusted valuation characteristics that closely resemble those of Big Tech stocks, the firm said.

Raymond James was listed by Goldman and in Barclays' Trump stock basket, according to the Jan. 30 note. Another group of industrial companies could get a piece of government spending from expansion of the Mexico border wall under a second Trump administration. The sheer persistence of the equity rally, with the S & P 500 up 16 of 18 weeks and refusing to succumb to supposed late-February seasonal weakness, has converted the cautious. Still, by some lights, stocks' valuation is one of the better sentiment indicators, and by that measure the investment community is pretty enthusiastic. More simply, we continue to see elevated but not alarming P/Es in the S & P 500 broadly while the median P/E of the top 10 names in the index remains close to past peaks." Coming at a time when the S & P 500 is more than 13% above its 200-day moving average — pretty stretched — and we haven't had even a 3% pullback since October. The "right" cyclical sectors are leading (industrials and consumer discretionary in addition to tech), and the equal-weight S & P 500 is nosing toward its old high.

The bank raised its S & P 500 target to 5,300 from 4,800. As China's property market and deflation woes continue to rattle investors, India's growth outlook appears all the more impressive.
