Opinion | Saving Electric Vehicles From Donald Trump
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Trump Seen as a Threat to E.V. Sales” (Business, Nov. 26):It is ironic that President-elect Donald Trump, who claims he will make America great again, wants to kill offshore wind and electric cars. President Biden tried hard to get American industry back into the green transition by promoting domestically built green energy and electric cars. Mr. Trump apparently wants to turn it all over to China. The green transition will happen regardless of what Mr. Trump thinks.

The US government tracks what percentage of each car’s parts is made “domestically.” But under current trade law, both Canadian-made parts and US-made parts are counted as the same domestic content. “Yes, it’s America’s truck, assembled in America, but not with American parts,” Ivan Drury, director of insights for Edmunds, told CNN. Domestic parts could be tough to findFinding domestic supplies for many of the imported car parts would be difficult. Even if an American parts supply could be found, in most cases it would be more expensive. Fewer imported cars would raise all pricesTariffs on imported vehicles likely would also lead to higher prices on cars that are assembled here, since it would limit the supply of vehicles in the US market.

Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Here are nine key senators to watch in the nomination battles. The incoming majority leader is nobody’s idea of an ultra-MAGA Republican, but he understands his assignment: advance the Trump agenda. Does he choose to be a heat shield for members who quietly want to buck Trump without doing so publicly? The answers will set the tone for a long-awaited new era facing the Senate GOP. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.McConnell is the ultimate free agent as he relinquishes the job of Senate Republican leader after a record 18 years.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada sent shivers on Tuesday through the auto industry, which depends heavily on both countries for parts and manufacturing. The prospect of tariffs “is a two-alarm fire for the auto industry,” said Patrick Anderson, chief executive of Anderson Economic Group, a consulting firm in Michigan. It includes Ram pickups made by Stellantis in Saltillo, Mexico, and Chrysler minivans built in Windsor, Ontario. General Motors makes Chevrolet Silverado pickups and electric versions of Equinox and Blazer S.U.V.s in Mexico, where Ford also makes its Maverick pickup. Those higher auto prices would have a significant effect on overall inflation.

The federal elections case led to a Supreme Court ruling granting a president limited immunity for official acts. This is likely to reinforce Trump’s belief that he will have almost unchecked authority and will therefore reverberate through the next four years and generations to come. And by voting the way they did, Americans effectively exonerated him in the federal cases — on charges that could have landed him in jail. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesWhat the thwarting of accountability meansThere will be short- and long-term consequences from Trump escaping accountability. But he also portrayed Trump’s evasion of a trial as a dark day for America.

CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

Senate Republicans derailed President-elect Donald Trump’s first jaw-dropping pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz. But it’s unclear if they will be able to block any other controversial nominees despite skepticism from some rank-and-file Republicans. In the weeks since Trump’s dramatic election victory, the power struggle between the president-elect and independent-minded Senate Republicans has been playing out in plain view. Senators are getting a brief reprieve from questions about Trump’s nominees as they celebrate Thanksgiving. Some Senate Republicans who leveled some of the strongest criticism at Gaetz said they could live with Hegseth, despite the 2017 assault allegations.

I know, White House-wise, you’ve got a lot of more pressing things to worry about right now. But this is the holiday season — you deserve a chance to think about a happy tomorrow. When Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump, I consoled myself by pointing out, about 20 times a day, that she won the popular vote. No such luck this time around: Kamala Harris got creamed. Just before the election, I happily wrote a column celebrating “how relatively normal” the nomination of Kamala Harris seemed.

CNN has reached out to Blue Origin for comment. Blue OriginFriday’s mission was Blue Origin’s ninth human spaceflight on the rocket used for space tourism. Upon landing safely at Blue Origin’s launch site in West Texas, Calandrelli compared seeing Earth from space for the first time to motherhood. Calandrelli said she was crying on the flight home from the mission because of the online reaction and texting her “space sisters” for advice. As she was getting off the flight, Calandrelli said the Southwest flight attendant recognized her and whispered, “don’t let them dull your shine.”“I felt an immediate sense of camaraderie with her, with all women,” Calandrelli said.

CNN —Despite his campaign promises to leave the issue to the states, President-elect Donald Trump’s administration will shape the national landscape around abortion and reproductive health. And his administration may also be forced to choose whether to pursue other changes, such as how the abortion drug mifepristone is regulated. “Back in April, President Trump made clear that he thinks abortion policy should be left to the states,” Kniffin said. If the Trump administration seeks to undo those and other agency measures, it could make those lawsuits moot. He says he won’t sign a federal bill on abortion,” said one prominent anti-abortion activist, who asked for anonymity to speak candidly.

William J. Barber II has long been one of America’s most persistent and eloquent spokespersons for poor and working-class Americans. Barber is the recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and helps lead the Poor People’s Campaign, which seeks national solutions to ongoing poverty. Barber also done something else: He’s shown Democrats how they can win political victories in red states. He once said, “Racism may target Black people, but it damns a democracy, and it damns humanity.”CNN spoke with Barber about the country’s future in Trump’s impending second term. Critics say Democrats are elitist and look down on working-class people.

A Republican senator has blocked the promotion of a general who oversaw troops in Kabul during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to a Senate aide. The move by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin follows threats from President-elect Donald Trump to fire senior officers and officials who oversaw the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan in 2021. His nomination was among more than 900 proposed nominations sent to the Senate but Donahue’s was put on hold by Sen. Mullin, according to the Senate aide. Donahue was the last American service member to board the final U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan in 2021. “Unless there are facts I don’t know, holding up military promotions bc of our disgraceful Afghanistan withdrawal is wrong,” she wrote.

Abortion rights groups are bracing for an especially tough fight in conservative Missouri, where they see one of the most restrictive bans in the country in place. But abortion rights groups in the heavily Republican state said they’re prepared to respond to any. The low-lying clouds over the city lit up for a split second, video footage showed, then streaks of dozens of glowing warheads plummeted out of the sky. The main contours of the attack on Thursday morning soon came to light: President Vladimir V. Putin said Russia had test fired an intermediate-range missile from its arsenal designed to deliver nuclear weapons, though without the nuclear warheads aboard. The Russian strike caused little damage, but it capped a dizzying week of tit-for-tat moves in the war in Ukraine, shifting focus from the ground assaults on the battlefield to a Cold War-style missile brinkmanship. In the previous two days, Ukraine had fired longer-range missiles provided by the U.S. and Britain at military targets inside Russia. Mr. Putin made clear that the Russian missile test was a response to those strikes — a warning to the West to reconsider military aid for Kyiv.

The day after President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia raised the stakes in tensions with the West, many Russians awoke on Friday feeling anxious that the prospect of nuclear war had come slightly closer. But in Russia’s tightly controlled news media and pro-government social media channels, there were only fawning reactions to the Russian leader’s new round of saber-rattling and promises that Moscow’s enemies would “tremble in fear.”Mr. Putin announced late Thursday that Russia had launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine, in response to Kyiv’s first use of U.S. and British missiles against targets inside Russia this week. Russia, he said, also has the right to strike nations “that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities.”In the West, Thursday’s launch of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile and Mr. Putin’s remarks were perceived as a threat against Ukraine and its allies, and drew widespread condemnation as an escalation. In Russia, the events were billed as an important sign that the Kremlin would enforce its red lines, with the implication that enforcement could include nuclear weapons.

Senate Republicans offered mixed responses Thursday to President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will nominate Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality accused of sexual assault, to lead the Defense Department following the release of a police report concerning sexual assault allegations against him. Some senators defended Trump's pick, while others voiced some trepidation, and a senator told NBC News "I don't care" when approached about a police report released Wednesday tied to an allegation of sexual assault against Hegseth in 2017. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., also defended Trump's pick, saying he had reviewed the report and would push for Hegseth's confirmation. Two other picks to serve in top jobs in Trump's Cabinet have also faced potentially damaging allegations of sexual misconduct. After Gaetz withdrew his name, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told NBC News that there were “similar, challenging allegations” with Hegseth.

CNN —Russia’s use of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile on Thursday is the latest escalation in the Ukraine war. The use of what Vladimir Putin said was a ballistic missile with multiple warheads in offensive combat is a clear departure from decades of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence. Ballistic missiles with multiple warheads, known as “multiple independently targeted reentry vehicles,” or MIRVs, have never been used to strike an enemy, experts say. Authorities in Norway have arrested a Norwegian man who worked as a security guard at the U.S. embassy in Oslo, accusing him of passing sensitive information to Russia and Iran. Under interrogation, the man, identified as Mohamed Orahhou, 27, admitted to collecting and sharing information with an officer from Russia’s domestic intelligence service, the S.V.R., as well as with unspecified Iranian officials, according to Norwegian authorities and Mr. Orahhou’s lawyer. The authorities have not released details about the type of information involved, but on Thursday a court in Oslo, citing the seriousness of the accusations, ordered Mr. Orahhou to be kept in custody for four weeks pending further investigation. “This is a very serious case,” Thomas Blom, an official from Norway’s Police Security Service, said in a text message to The New York Times. “We are at the very beginning of a rather extensive investigation.”

In many ways, President Vladimir V. Putin seems to be winning. Russian forces are pushing ahead in Ukraine. President-elect Donald J. Trump is returning to the White House. And yet on Thursday, Mr. Putin appeared weary, threatened and newly aggrieved as he took his bellicose threats against his Western adversaries to a new level. As a result, Mr. Putin is bringing Russia closer to a direct conflict with the United States than at any point in decades.
