The media mogul Barry Diller has pulled The Daily Beast off the auction block. Mr. Diller, the chairman of the digital media company IAC, said on Friday that The Daily Beast — a digital tabloid known for its aggressive political and media coverage — is not for sale. Until recent days, according to people with knowledge of the talks, he had been in discussions about a deal with Ankler Media, a start-up that has earned a reputation for its unsparing coverage of Hollywood elites since Janice Min, a longtime magazine editor, co-founded it early last year. “We did have negotiations with The Ankler, but we have withdrawn from them,” Mr. Diller, 81, said in a statement. “The Daily Beast is not for sale.”He did not elaborate on his plans for The Daily Beast, a publication that the magazine editor Tina Brown first edited in 2008 and that has earned plaudits for its journalism.

A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.

CNN CEO Chris Licht has been hit with a torrent of criticism since a profile of him dropped Friday. CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy wrote that Licht had "lost the room." This time, it's coming from inside the house, as CNN media reporter delivered a brutal assessment of Licht in Monday night's Reliable Sources newsletter. "In the wake of The Atlantic's explosive story, I've spoken with dozens of staffers across the company," Darcy wrote. In fairness to Licht, Darcy also reported that the "somber" remarks the CEO delivered on Monday had "struck the right tone."

☆ ‘R.M.N.’ Review: A Bleak Diagnosis for Romania

Deep into “R.M.N.,” an anatomy of the human condition, this powerhouse of a movie gets deeper, creepier and unnervingly familiar. At that point, dozens of residents in a Romanian village have gathered for an impromptu town hall. I’ve called the movie an anatomy, but this scene is more of an autopsy. “R.M.N.” is set in motion by Matthias (Marin Grigore), a hulking brute who stalks the movie like a threat. He moves back in with his wary wife and young son, and pursues and beds a former lover.

The report found that the FBI and DHS continue to spend more on international terrorism, despite saying for years that domestic terrorism now poses a greater threat to Americans. The report said a change in how the FBI categorizes domestic terrorism ideologies has been a hindrance to understanding the problem. In 2017, FBI created a new category of domestic terrorism ideology called “Black Identity Extremists,” but then stopped using it. The report also criticized the FBI and DHS as having been conservative in hunting for threat intelligence posted publicly on social media. Research conducted by MIT’s Technology Review found that “users consistently migrate from milder to more extreme content” on YouTube.

The January 6 committee report contains extensive documentation of forewarnings of violence that were percolating up from confidential sources, open-source analysts, and senior officials. On January 4, Senator Mark Warner, chair of the Senate intelligence committee, called the FBI's deputy director with his concerns. As the committee notes, a threat analyst noted a "tenfold uptick in violent online rhetoric targeting Congress and law enforcement." Looming over the January 6 committee's report is the report by the 9/11 Commission, which was far from perfect, but much more comprehensive and unsparing.
