Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev have all been at this stage before. The Serbian is bidding to win his fourth US Open title and his 24th grand slam overall. “I think the mental has improved more than the physical,” Shelton told reporters, speaking about his development. Now, I’m facing my fourth one,” Alcaraz told reporters. I think that’s how sometimes it can be in life, many things can happen, and you can be disappointed,” Medvedev told reporters.

Appearing more relaxed in his post match interview, Djokovic sang, '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)' with fans in the stands joining along. "I'm trying to enjoy the moments on the court, but there's so much stress and pressure going on that it's hard to have fun, so to say, on the court," Djokovic told reporters. "It's really about finding a way to navigate through the match and win a match for me, you know. "Both of the guys ... Shelton and Tiafoe, have a lot of charisma," Djokovic said.

The 20-year-old will need all of his weapons on Friday if he is to stand a chance in his first meeting with Djokovic. "I think that it's an advantage with my game style, playing someone who's never played me before," Shelton told reporters. "I think that I can bring some things to the table that maybe you don't see in your normal match that you play on the ATP Tour. NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev felt he had to react when he heard a fan use language from Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime during his U.S. Open match. That made the ejection of the Zverev fan — who was not arrested — an easy decision. Less clear is a situation like the Djokovic fan, whose behavior is normal at a basketball or football game, where spectators don't hold their applause until play has stopped. “Again, if the rule one day is going to change, I’m not going to argue against this anymore, because that’s the rule,” Medvedev said. It’s the rule.”Tiafoe advocates tennis encouraging fans to cheer and move around freely, like team sports.

"Feeling like I left it all out here tonight," said the 47th ranked Shelton, who is still searching for his first ATP Tour win. "He (Djokovic) has won 23 of these (Grand Slams), it doesn't get much better than that," said Shelton. Shelton came out guns blazing, with his groundstrokes struck with such venom they drew gasps from the capacity crowd. After holding his first two serves Tiafoe had no answers for his opponent's explosive forehand as Shelton claimed five straight games to snatch opening set. Another break at 5-2 and Tiafoe's fate was sealed with Shelton holding serve for the win.

For Rublev it was a familiar end to a Grand Slam, made all the more painful coming at the hands of his good friend Medvedev for the third time and second at the U.S. Open. Nine times Rublev has contested a Grand Slam quarter-final, losing each one with Medvedev also knocking him out at the same stage of the 2020 U.S. Open and 2021 Australian Open. "Just tried to go for it, tried to run, tried to catch the balls and he did the same." It was an ominous start to the match for Rublev with Medvedev 25-0 at Flushing Meadows after winning the first set. With the brutal conditions preventing both players from finding any rhythm, the breaks came fast and furious the next two sets.

CNN —No matter who wins Tuesday’s US Open quarterfinals match between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, history will be made: For the first time, two Black men will face off in the match. It’s also the first time since 2008 that two Black men play each other at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe, 25, and Shelton, 20, will face each other at a stadium christened after the Black tennis legend who broke barriers in the game. He was also the first Black American to play on the United States Davis Cup team. Earlier this year, Shelton’s father resigned from coaching at the University of Florida to coach his son in professional tennis.

CNN —Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the US Open semifinals with an emphatic victory over American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday. Victory ensured that Djokovic’s hopes of winning a 24th grand slam title remain alive, as he seeks to equal Margaret Court’s outright record and extend his own men’s record. I thrive on that energy, whatever the energy is, use it as a fuel to try and play my best tennis,” Djokovic added. Fritz, who is enjoying his best run at his home grand slam, continued to grow into the game and gave Djokovic a stern test in the third set. The American earned multiple break points against the 36-year-old, but Djokovic continued to produce in the most important moments to stay ahead.

For the first time since 2005, three Americans have progressed to the quarterfinals of the men’s draw. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are the trio still harboring dreams of winning a home grand slam. Tiafoe and Shelton will play each other on Tuesday, while Fritz has a rather tricky tie against 23-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic on the same day. I’m not going to do anything different because I’m playing Novak,” he told reporters after reaching the quarterfinal. “He’s going to come after me, and I’m going to come after him.

With temperatures once again nudging towards 100 Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), Djokovic turned in a cool, clinical effort, improving his record against American opposition at the U.S. Open to a perfect 12-0. "It's expected of course that people are backing the home player and there is nothing wrong with that," said Djokovic. On a baking hot day, 19-year-old Coco Gauff had warmed up the Arthur Ashe crowd, blasting past Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 6-0 6-2 to become the youngest American to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2001. "As the song went that they played here five minutes ago, you've got to fight for your right to party." Djokovic wasted no time ending both those runs, breaking the American three times and then taking the first set with a booming ace.

He will usually return to his bench, hydrate and towel off his face and body before slipping into a fresh shirt. Sometimes he’ll grab a fresh shirt out of his bag at the end of a set. It is not uncommon for a player who has been sweating in a competition to change into a clean shirt a few times each match. “You want to be as light as you can on the court,” Tiafoe said after his second-round victory, adding that if he feels even a small amount of moisture on his shirt, he’ll change it. For Tiafoe, it is a near obsession with changing shirts — perhaps more than any other player on the men’s tour.

CNN —Jessica Pegula advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a hard fought 6-4 4-6 6-2 victory over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, continuing the impressive performances of American players at their home tournament. 3 seed will now face her compatriot Madison Keys for a place in the quarterfinals after Keys completed a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in her own third-round match. “We always believed this would happen,” said Martin Blackman, the general manager for player development at the U.S.T.A., who has known all five players since their early years. That was last year, though, and there was no guarantee that they or any of their compatriots would reproduce the magic of some of those days. Looking at the draw in the middle of last week, Fritz’s eyes drifted to the quarter just above him, where Shelton, Paul and Tiafoe were crowded together. Some big names were out, and his people were still very much alive. Immediately he thought, “One of them is going to be in the semis,” and that was pretty cool.

Third seed Daniil Medvedev once again worked the U.S. Open graveyard shift on Saturday, beating in-form Sebastian Baez 6-2 6-2 7-6(6) to end the Argentine's 12 match winning streak. After straight set romps in her first two matches, Pegula received her first test in the form of gritty veteran Svitolina, a U.S. Open semi-finalist in 2019. Pegula had the only break in a tight opening set but that would be all she needed for a 1-0 lead. In the second it was Svitolina finally getting her first break chance and making the most of the opportunity to pull level. The last time Flushing Meadows had a chance to celebrate a homegrown women's champion was in 2017 when Sloane Stephens beat Keys in an all-American final.
