And then they charge the big pay TV distributors a ton to carry their broadcasts of those games. Which may explain why, up until Tuesday, they hadn't told any of the pay TV companies or sports leagues about their plans, industry executives tell me. But if you're the kind of person who's buying an antenna to watch sports TV, you're not going to buy this thing anyway.) Read previewMost people who wanted to watch the Dolphins-Chiefs playoff game this past weekend had to do so by paying for Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service. On Sunday, NBC said the streaming game was a success: Depending on how they measured it, the network said the game averaged an audience of 23 million to 26 million viewers. But we won't really know if the game was a success for NBC until it announces the most important metric: How many people paid for Peacock so they could watch the game? Before Saturday's game, NBCUniversal's parent company, Comcast, had said Peacock had 30 million paid subscribers. But that number will almost certainly determine whether NBC or any other service pays up for a streaming-only playoff game next year.

LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Colin Rea will remain with the Milwaukee Brewers after the right-handed pitcher agreed to a one-year deal with a club option for 2025. The Brewers announced the deal Thursday, just after Rea had become a free agent. After making just one major league appearance in 2021 and spending last season in Japan, Rea went 6-6 with a 4.55 ERA in 26 games this year. Rea’s 22 starts ranked fourth on the team, and the Brewers went 14-8 in those games while winning their second NL Central title in three years. Before this season, Rea had made just one MLB appearance.
