Magnitude 5.6 quake hits Turkey; more buildings collapse
  + stars: | 2023-02-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook southern Turkey on Monday — three weeks after a catastrophic temblor devastated the region — causing some already damaged buildings to collapse, an official said. A father and daughter were reported trapped beneath the rubble of one building. Malatya was among 11 Turkish provinces hit by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that devastated parts of southern Turkey and northern Syria on Feb. 6. That quake led to more than 48,000 deaths in both countries as well as the collapse or serious damage of 173,000 buildings in Turkey. AFAD, Turkey's disaster management agency, said that close to 10,000 aftershocks have hit the region affected by the quake since Feb. 6.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the border region between Turkey and Syria, an area home to more than 13.5 million people, early Monday morning. Mustafa Turan rushed to his hometown of Adiyaman from Istanbul hours after the quake struck to check on his relatives. Aerial footage from over the earthquake zone in Turkey revealed entire neighborhoods of high-rises reduced to twisted metal, pulverized concrete and exposed wires. The disaster is a reminder that large segments of the world’s population are as vulnerable to major earthquakes today as they were centuries ago. In fact, the scenes in Turkey are tragically similar to those reported on Nov. 1, 1755, when a massive earthquake hit Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, at approximately 9:45 a.m. The Great Lisbon Earthquake, as it became known, was one of the most consequential quakes in modern history, and its story can shed light on the challenges survivors face today—practical, political and even philosophical. There were no reliable seismometers in the 18th century, but the Great Lisbon Earthquake is estimated at between 8.5 and 9.2 on the moment magnitude scale—at least five times stronger than the initial quake in Turkey, which registered 7.8. Like the earthquakes in Turkey, the Lisbon temblor came with little or no warning.
How search and rescue teams pull survivors from rubble

The International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), a network of countries and organisations under a U.N. umbrella, helps facilitate coordination between international search and rescue teams that deploy in such disasters. The survey helps to identify possible resources and hazards, as well as the main priorities for search and rescue teams. The disaster area is often then drawn into sectors to allocate command and to assign search teams. Often debris must be removed by hand to avoid crushing survivors by using heavy equipment.Below are some of the smaller types of rescue equipment that may be used by rescue teams. Search and rescue teams have worked day and night in cold, wet weather while also facing the threat of aftershocks.
Turkish stocks and the lira fell Tuesday in the wake of a deadly 7.8 earthquake on Monday. Turkey's President Erdogan declared a state of emergency in areas hard hit by the natural disaster. Sharp losses in Turkish stocks prompted two trading halts. In US trade, the iShares MSCI Turkey ETF fell 6%, adding to its 2.4% decline on Monday. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces that were hit the hardest in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
ISTANBUL—A second powerful earthquake battered Turkey and northern Syria on Monday just hours after a strong temblor shook the region, killing more than 1,400 people and destroying thousands of buildings, Turkish and Syrian authorities said. A 7.8-magnitude quake felt across four countries on Monday morning was followed by a series of aftershocks and then a 7.5-magnitude quake in the afternoon that authorities said was separate from the first. The quakes were Turkey’s worst seismic event in decades, rocking an area around the city of Gaziantep that is home to millions of Turkish citizens, displaced Syrians and refugees.
Just hours later, a 7.5-magnitude quake hit the same area, raising the specter of a new humanitarian crisis in a region devastated by years of conflict. A massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey on Monday , killing more than 3,000 people in the country and neighboring Syria with scores more trapped in the rubble as another huge temblor hit the region. People search for survivors under the rubble following an earthquake in Diyarbakir, Turkey February 6, 2023. The quake hit an area of Syria's northwest that is divided between government-held territory and the country's last remaining rebel-controlled enclave. Turkey sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes; 18,000 people were killed in powerful earthquakes that hit northwest Turkey in 1999.
Death toll from Turkey, Syria quake set to jump, WHO says

GENEVA, Feb 6 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) expects a significant jump in the death toll following a major earthquake and its aftershocks in southern Turkey and northwestern Syria that reduced many buildings to rubble. The magnitude 7.8 quake, which rattled southern Turkey early on Monday, was the worst to hit the country this century, killing more than 900 people there and about 550 across the border in Syria, according to officials. "I think we can expect the death toll to increase significantly," Rick Brennan, the WHO's regional emergency director for the Eastern Mediterranean, told Reuters. "There's been a lot of building collapses and it will increase more significantly around the epicentre of the earthquake." "It's harder for the rescue teams to get in there to extract people," he said.

Three powerful earthquakes have struck Mexico on Sept. 19 — in 1985, 2017 and now 2022. The last two quakes also came very shortly after the annual earthquake drill conducted every Sept. 19 to commemorate the devastating 1985 temblor. On the morning of Sept. 19, 1985, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the center, south and west of the country, leaving some 9,500 dead. “It’s really strange, but a lot of people already don’t like that day,” said Jorge Ornelas, a call center coordinator. Monday’s earthquake was the result of the “interaction of the Cocos plate with the North America plate,” which also generated the 1985 earthquake.

On WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and beyond, anxious Mexicans found humor in the unexplainable - that an earthquake would strike just an hour after a scheduled earthquake drill in Mexico City and other major cities. "These Mexicans are hardcore, they do earthquake drills with live earthquakes," one meme said, showing an image of an impressed Barack Obama. Some memes cast a suspicious eye on official reports that the timing of another Sept. 19 earthquake was just a coincidence. One academic study released prior to the latest quake showed that three in 10 people who experienced the Sept. 19, 2017 quake suffered effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.
