AdvertisementBusiness Insider interviewed tech workers and industry experts about Grubgate and the evolving relationship between Big Tech companies and staff. They also described how layoffs, efficiency drives, and tougher policy enforcement have shifted the culture at once easygoing tech companies. According to job marketplace Trueup, at least 650,000 tech workers have been cut since the start of 2023. Alongside industrywide layoffs that began in 2022, many tech companies also trimmed back the benefits on offer.

Dropbox is laying off 528 employees, about 20% of its workforce, and making the company flatter. "We've heard from many of you that our organizational structure has become overly complex, with excess layers of management slowing us down." Mark Zuckerberg instituted manager cuts and increased the average number of direct reports for Meta managers after complaining about "managers managing managers." CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday told investors that resources like fossil fuels will remain important and enable technological innovations, even as investments in renewable energy continue to grow. While the tech megacaps are investing heavily in nuclear energy, Cramer suggested that power won't play a huge role in the data center for at least a decade. He also reviewed GE Vernova 's recent quarter, saying the company's strength came from electrification and natural gas, not wind or nuclear power. But Cramer also stressed that the conversation around fossil fuels extends beyond the automotive industry. "The truth is, fossil fuels are essential for a lot more than vehicles, like it or not."

The company's energy strategy team recently pitched CEO Andy Jassy on the benefits of nuclear power. AdvertisementIn June, Amazon's Global Energy Strategy team pitched CEO Andy Jassy the idea of doubling down on nuclear power to support its growing network of data centers. Jassy agreed, according to an internal Amazon document from the third quarter that was obtained by Business Insider. The company considered tapping into at least four additional existing nuclear power plants and sought even more small modular reactor deals. Nuclear power can be safer, more reliable, and more cost-efficient in the long term compared to other power sources, according to Jacopo Buongiorno, a nuclear engineering professor at MIT.

Inspired by successful e-commerce entrepreneurs, I decided to try my hand at selling on Amazon. I set a budget of $5,000, enough to launch something basic and an amount I was comfortable losing. These conversations got me thinking: Is starting a profitable Amazon business … simple? We'd been toying with the idea of starting an e-commerce business since the spring of 2023, when I mentioned one of the Amazon stories I was working on. Double the founders would mean not only double the budget but double the skillset and the network.
