Nvidia dethroned Apple as the world’s most valuable company on Friday following a record-setting rally in the stock, powered by insatiable demand for its specialized artificial intelligence chips. Nvidia’s stock market value briefly touched $3.53 trillion, slightly above Apple’s $3.52 trillion, LSEG data showed. Nvidia ended the day up 0.8%, with a market value of $3.47 trillion, while Apple’s shares rose 0.4%, valuing the iPhone maker at $3.52 trillion. In June, Nvidia briefly became the world’s most valuable company before it was overtaken by Microsoft and Apple. Shares of Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft have an outsized influence on the richly valued technology sector as well as the broader U.S. stock market, with the trio accounting for about a fifth of the S&P 500 index’s weight.

Here are 13 top stocks that are cheap and have above-average earnings growth. Mega-cap growth stocks dusted their smaller peers for 18 months, beginning in early 2023. These firms have above-average earnings growth and cheaper-than-average valuations, and they have an impressive record of outperformance over the last few decades. Without potent earnings, GARP stocks could risk falling into the "value trap" category. Cheaper GARP stocks should become more appealing in that backdrop, according to BMO, and historical performance backs that up.

The U.S. dollar clung to a two-and-half-month high on Tuesday on expectations the Federal Reserve will take a measured approach to interest rate cuts, while a close battle in the upcoming U.S. election kept investors on edge. The U.S. dollar clung to a two-and-half-month high on Tuesday on expectations the Federal Reserve will take a measured approach to interest rate cuts, while a close battle in the upcoming U.S. election kept investors on edge. Four Federal Reserve policymakers expressed support on Monday for further rate cuts, but appeared to differ on how fast or far they believe any cuts should go. With the U.S. election just two weeks away, the rising odds of former President Donald Trump winning the Nov. 5 election are boosting the dollar, since his proposed tariff and tax policies are seen as likely to keep U.S. interest rates high. The yen on Tuesday was at 150.57 per dollar, hovering close to the two-and-half-month low of 150.88.

Luxury stocks may be a risky China stimulus bet
  + stars: | 2024-10-19 | by ( Hakyung Kim | In Hakyungkim | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +7 min
A post-pandemic spending surge led to luxury stocks such as LVMH to reach all-time highs in early 2023, but that soon changed. We believe improved confidence and sentiment is required to reach even our flat year-over-year Chinese luxury growth forecast for 2025," Wallace noted. Luxury stocks are feeling the pressure — year to date, U.S.-traded shares of major players LVMH and Kering are down about 17% and 41%, respectively. Analysts and investors are mixed as to whether the Chinese stimulus measures can revive luxury spending growth among consumers — and whether it will create a meaningful tailwind for luxury companies. Whether the luxury sector can continue growing at the same levels without as much Chinese consumer spending remains in question.

To be sure, a Bloomberg report earlier Tuesday that the U.S. government was considering a cap on AI chip exports to certain Persian Gulf nations may also have dampened industry sentiment. Investors are sensitive to any updates on AI chip demand, given the dramatic rise in the stocks of Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and others over the past two years. Bottom line Artificial intelligence is alive and well, according to TSMC, which has emerged as the most valuable window into AI demand other than Nvidia itself. With Big Tech earnings in the coming weeks, it's particularly nice to see the AI chip trade stabilize after the ASML debacle. Jim said Thursday that AMD, which has way underperformed Nvidia, Broadcom and the broader market, is "still a bargain."

Bitcoin could hit a fresh all-time high ahead of the presidential election, Standard Chartered says. Standard Chartered estimates bitcoin could hit $73,800 in the next few weeks. Second, SAB 121 exemptions go hand-in-hand with MicroStrategy's announced plan to become a "bitcoin bank," offering bitcoin capital market instruments down the road. In Kendrick's mind, the outcome of the presidential election is secondary to these bullish forces, with both Trump and Harris victories boding well for the token.

Ahead of the latest monthly inflation reading, consumers are still coming to terms with the sticker shock of everyday goods and services prices — and lingering uncertainty about the economy. The pace of consumer price growth was expected to have remained largely unchanged in September, according to Dow Jones estimates. Harris has narrowed the gap in some surveys about which presidential candidate would be better on economic issues, but Trump still leads on that metric. Analysts generally agree that’s a sign the economy remains on solid footing, at least according to the data. Today’s inflation numbers could cause Wall Street to pare back expectations of an interest-rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting in November.

A couple of analyst downgrades are making the rounds Monday on megacap stocks that rarely see ratings cuts: Apple and Amazon. At Jefferies, analysts downgraded Apple to a hold but increased the price target to $213 apiece from $205. It also presents a problem for investors who see the downgrades as a reason to sell some shares. After all, you'll be hard-pressed to find companies anywhere more in charge of their own destinies than Apple, Amazon — or any of the Super Six (Meta, Nvidia, Alphabet, Microsoft). Apple and Amazon aren't where they are because of luck, but rather because they make their own luck.

Ed Yardeni predicts the S&P 500 could reach 8,000 by 2030. AdvertisementThere's a simple reason one of the most bullish Wall Street strategists expects the stock market to continue rising in the years ahead: compound interest. At a compounded annual growth rate of between 6% and 7%, the S&P 500 is on track to hit 8,000 by 2030, representing potential upside of about 40% from current levels. "The S&P 500 stock price index is driven by its earnings per share (EPS), which has been growing mostly between 6% and 7% since the 1950s," Yardeni said. He added: "EPS could double to $400 by the end of the decade in our Roaring 2020s scenario," Yardeni said.

The U.S. economy added a whopping 254,000 jobs in September, nearly 100,000 more than economists expected. The unemployment rate, which was expected to hold steady at 4.2%, slipped to 4.1%. Wages also rose more than expected month over month. To be sure, the new data also has traders pricing a smaller quarter percentage point interest rate reduction at the central bank's November meeting.
