21 Tennessee and Kentucky really need a lift right now. “We’ve all got to be a little bit better in the second half,” Volunteers coach John Heupel said this week. Kentucky has yielded 479 yards on 54 flags (68.4 per game), Tennessee 470 on 56 (67.1). Under coordinator Tim Banks, Tennessee also ranks third in the league and 17th in the FBS, giving up just 310.9 yards a game. The Vols' challenge is cracking a Kentucky run defense ranked second in the SEC, allowing 95.71 yards a game.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The frustration from back-to-back playoff losses to San Francisco that both ended on odd plays turned to humiliation for the Dallas Cowboys. Hoping to prove themselves against a fellow NFC contender in a showdown against the 49ers, the Cowboys were run off the field almost from the start. The offense took more than a quarter to gain even a single first down and couldn't move the ball or protect it. Felt good about the preparation, felt good about everything honestly coming into this game and they beat us in every aspect.”It's now three straight wins in the series for San Francisco. That's partly why so few quantitative trading firms reside in California, whose labor-friendly laws have long favored employee mobility and competition. Exhibit A: The Voleon Group, a prominent quantitative-trading firm based in Berkeley, California, that manages about $5 billion in assets. Millions of auto workers and suppliers in China are feeling the heat as an electric vehicle price war forces carmakers to shave costs anywhere they can. State-run China Automotive News estimates there are over 100,000 auto suppliers in the country. Suppliers typically negotiate prices once a year, but many have been pressed to lower prices on a quarterly basis in 2023, two senior executives at auto suppliers said. And in June, a group of small suppliers wrote to state-owned Changan Automobile to push back against 10% price reductions. Three months later, he told Reuters that price cuts had been more aggressive in 2023 than in previous years.

There are more than 50,000 US VC-backed startups, and many will be looking for capital soon. Some startups will be looking for funding in Q4 or be forced to look for a sale or shut down. The startup has followed the typical survival strategy of a desperate startup this year by first cutting costs with layoffs. We all know venture capital funding is tough to come by these days. Venture capital funding was overly abundant in the latter half of 2020 and all of 2021.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsHONG KONG/AMSTERDAM, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Global investors fleeing China have one simple message for the country's leadership: put prudence aside for a short while, and start spending big. "At this point there is confusion and, as long as there is confusion, then there's lack of credibility and that means investors are more likely to stay away," said Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Global Investors in London. Prominent examples are heavy Chinese government spending during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and its swift intervention during the 2015 market crash. But the subsidies need to come from local governments, many of which are cash-strapped or even drowning in debt and unable to pay their civil servants. The lack of concrete stimulus measures now is prompting many China watchers to downgrade their growth estimates for the next few years.

Sleeping giants Spain awaken at Women's World Cup

On Tuesday, "La Roja" shrugged off that record of underachievement with a rousing 2-1 win over Sweden to reach the final of the Women's World Cup for the first time. Having failed to even qualify for the World Cup until Canada in 2015, Spain have electrified Australia and New Zealand with 17 goals and a lively, attacking game. Their rise has mirrored the revival of European football at a tournament once dominated by the United States. Yet La Rojas' trip to this World Cup final has generated headlines in Spain and sent fans into a frenzy on social media. Spain have momentum on their side, and not only at the World Cup.

Stingy UK bank saving rates may become a non-issue
  + stars: | 2023-08-10 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Aug 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Banks are keeping the fruits of higher interest rates for themselves. Between January 2022 and May 2023, the Bank of England hiked rates by 4.25 percentage points. The nine largest UK banks boosted the interest on easy-access savings accounts by 1.18 percentage points, the FCA found. The upshot is that they’ll have to bid more aggressively for funding in the future, for example by raising interest rates on savings accounts. Second-quarter results suggest it too is paying more for funding: interest expense almost doubled between the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023.

Wait times for rides and attractions at both resorts have shortened, according to analysts who track theme park attendance. Disney CEO Bob Iger attributed Disney World’s recent decline in wait times to an overall slump in Central Florida tourism. Iger told CNBC he did not have “long-term concerns” about Disney’s theme parks. For Universal’s Florida parks, every month since March has seen lower average wait times, according to the site. Pareti said she spends between four and six days per week at Disney’s parks and visits Universal parks, as well.

LONDON, June 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Pandemic-era lockdowns and government stimulus have left euro zone citizens with 1 trillion euros in extra savings. That will leave consumer goods giants like $445 billion LVMH (LVMH.PA) downcast, but the European Central Bank pretty pleased. Euro zone citizens put as much as 1 trillion euros – or 8% of GDP – in their piggy banks since the health emergency, according to Oxford Economics’ estimates. Finally, euro zone savers have been favouring the higher returns offered by illiquid assets instead of sticking with easily accessible cash. These investments account for 33% of euro zone citizens’ total financial assets, compared to 30% before the pandemic.

Ben and other drivers have some theories about why riders aren't as generous as they used to be. Ben, a full-time Uber and Uber Eats driver for five years, said he'd worked as many as 90 hours in one week to make ends meet. Last year, Ben earned roughly $77,000 pretax driving for Uber and Uber Eats. Sergio AvedianUltimately, Avedian said Uber riders' tipping habits today could be traced to the company's decisions several years ago. In-app tipping wasn't even an option for Uber riders until 2017, despite drivers pushing for it for years.

More than one-third of North American family offices experienced at least one cyberattack in the past 12 months in 2022, per Campden. It comes down to three problems, said Bobby Stover, who leads family office and enterprise services at Ernst & Young. When it comes to cybersecurity, family office principals are cheap, uneducated, and "don't want to deal with it," he told Insider. They cost anywhere from $25,000 to $65,000, and family offices often struggle to understand the benefit, according to Stover. One survey found an incident that cost a family office more than $10 million.
New York CNN —More stores now offer customers the option to tip, from coffee shops to ice cream stores. They are also overwhelmed with the number of places that give them the option to tip with a card on an iPad, leading people to be less generous. Although consumers are accustomed to tipping waiters, bartenders and other service workers, tipping a barista or cashier may be a new phenomenon for many shoppers. Some customers tip no matter what. Others feel guilty if they don’t tip or embarrassed if their tip is stingy.
