True to form, Swift ensured this year's Grammy discourse would be dominated by her music, even if she didn't win a major award. Alas, the evening ended with Swift notching her record-breaking fourth win for album of the year. I was even more disappointed to watch Swift win over SZA, whose sophomore album, "SOS," earned universal acclaim. Despite being the most awarded person in Grammy history, Beyoncé has won only once in a general-field category (song of the year for "Single Ladies" in 2010). Only 11 Black artists have ever won album of the year.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. But, when Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman both reported 2023 results this week, it was a different story. For both companies, space was the top segment for sales growth in 2023 — by a wide margin. You'd think with such strong results, space would be a highlight of quarterly earnings calls. But for both Lockheed and Northrop, executives and analysts still only mentioned space in passing.

There are no books actually on the night stand — just a clock, lamp and photo of my daughters. But beside it is a wobbly pile of 21 volumes (I just counted), and a smaller tower of almost as many again. Each summer I rent a house in a village in the foothills of the White Mountains in Crete. There is one bougainvillea-shaded taverna, which shares the village square with a tiny Byzantine chapel, decorated with magnificent 14th-century frescoes. I sent Alice fan mail to say so, and we ended up on the phone for an hour talking about medieval beards.

REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON/SYDNEY, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Global shares drifted on Friday in the absence of guidance from Wall Street, which was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday the previous day, but they were still on course for their best month since November 2020. An indecisive Asia session extended to Europe, with the Stoxx 600 share index (.STOXX) trading flat. Despite optimism having surged across global markets this month, there may also be a lull ahead as investors position their portfolios for 2024, some analysts said. Minutes from the latest Fed policy meeting signalled there would not be more hikes unless progress against taming inflation faltered.

So by the end of the day, sleep pressure is strong, your circadian rhythm is telling you it’s time for sleep and your environment is cozy and comfortable. Instead of having more than 16 hours of wakefulness behind you, you have just woken up and therefore have less sleep pressure. They start with light sleep, progress to deep sleep and then end with light sleep again. It might be easier to fall asleep on the couch, where there is less stress involved. This will ensure all the sleep pressure you build up during the day will be directed toward a deep sleep in your bed.

Snoozers have the same sleep quality when they wake up immediately vs. when they snooze, a new study found. In fact, when people were allowed to snooze for 30 minutes, they were actually more alert. This contradicts what people previously thought about snoozing, that it hurts sleep quality. Next, the scientists closely monitored 31 regular snoozers in the lab to see what effects snoozing had on their sleep quality. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe test results found no serious physical differences in sleep quality between the two scenarios.

Just “tap tap” after you’ve raised your arm to wake up the Watch and you’ll take action on the active app. And for third-party apps, double tap will do the primary action if you get a notification. It may sound like a novelty, but in my initial testing I’ve found double tap to be surprisingly useful (and it feels pretty magical, too). I can see double tap evolving to become as natural a gesture as poking at the Apple Watch’s screen or spinning its digital crown. (And I’m usually the first to say if an Apple feature is mostly hype and little function.)

New York CNN —As the US national debt passes $33 trillion and a government shutdown looms, Wall Street feels defensive. What’s happening: The gross national debt has grown at an alarming pace since then — by $1 trillion in the last three months alone. Political finger pointing around what caused the accelerated debt accrual, meanwhile, has left the government at an impasse around the budget. The recent increase in interest rates has already made it much more expensive for the government to pay back what it owes. That would leave the door open for another rate increase, which could come when the following meeting concludes, on November 1.

The central bank will need to see more "signs that labor market conditions are loosening," governor Michelle Bowman said Saturday. But governor Michelle Bowman pushed back on Saturday, saying that additional hikes would probably be needed to bring inflation in line with the central bank's 2% target. Bowman flagged the labor market the same week a fresh batch of jobs data signaled the Fed might have more work to do to stop another flare-up in prices. "The recent jobs data is more or less in agreement with anecdotal evidence that a softening in the labor market is underway," UBS Global Wealth Management CIO Mark Haefele said in a note to clients Monday. "But elements of resilience in the jobs market mean that investors cannot yet take an end to rate hikes for granted," he added.

In my book, "Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking," I outline the two types of listening to master: critical listening and empathetic listening. Good listening skills boost your credibility and make you sound confident. People who win arguments and are good at debating don't just speak well, they listen well, too. You need to be a critical listener when your teacher is giving you feedback on an essay you wrote. By listening critically to your opponent and being ready to catch fallacious or false claims, you can prepare zinger-like responses, and win your argument.

He had run from baseline to baseline, on a court that had splashes of black and red and the printed words of his mantra: Overly Determined to Dominate. At each end of the court, he had caught a pass and taken a shot. As a trainer passed to him, Scoot Henderson imagined that it was the end of a playoff game and that he had just stolen the basketball. He sank onto the first row of aluminum stands lining the court at his family’s gym north of Atlanta. He was exhausted and excited, focused on building “grown-man strength” for his looming transition to the N.B.A.

During his snooze, the study team will analyze Woofus’ brain waves to judge the quality of his sleep. John Joyner/NC State Veterinary MedicineTraining the dogs to accept EEGTo find out whether sleep problems in dogs indicate early signs of dementia as they do in people, Olby and her team turned to a group of senior dogs enrolled in an ongoing study testing antiaging supplements. John Joyner/NC State Veterinary MedicineFor the new study measuring a dog’s brain waves during sleep, researchers used a form of electroencephalogram called polysomnography, used in sleep clinics to diagnose sleep problems in people. Jake, a 13-year-old pointer, was one of 28 dogs trained to sleep with EEG electrodes. When sleeping brain waves were compared with a dog’s cognitive testing, researchers found that dogs with greater dementia spent less time in deep and REM sleep, just as people do.
