Morning Bid: Some payback, but bonds hug gains on oil
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The oil price slide was helped by signs from Israel that it's open to pauses in the Gaza fighting. The typically hawkish Minneapolis Fed boss Neel Kashkari insisted it was still too early to take another rate hike off the table. Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its policy interest rate again, as expected, by another quarter point to a 12-year high of 4.35%. Overall, the global stocks picture reflected some of the cooling of last week's rally and some of the China export numbers. On Friday, the Bank of Japan intervened in the Japanese government bond (JGB) market as the 10-year JGB yield touched a decade high. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) skidded 0.8% to a fresh low since November last year, bringing the weekly loss to a sizeable 3%. "World leaders continue to trek to the Middle East to – if nothing else — delay the onset of any further hostility," said Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at capital.com. Oil prices are headed for the second weekly gain on supply fears from an escalating regional conflict in the Middle East. [1/5] Emergency services assist in the evacuation of people from their homes in Brechin, amid floods during "Storm Babet", in Scotland, Britain October 20, 2023. Britain's national weather forecaster, the Met Office, issued its first red warning for rain since February 2020, predicting some locations would see as much as 250 millimetres (9.84 inches). "This is an exceptional event, and we are likely to continue to see significant impacts with the potential for further flooding," Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said. The Met Office also has amber and yellow weather warnings in place for much of England. Local emergency services said there were no reported injuries.

A Trump attorney shouted, "You lied yesterday," while cross-examining a key state's witness. a lawyer for Trump's side shouted at the witness, prompting five minutes of sometimes shouted cross-accusations of perjury, witness intimidation, and showboating for the press. "Let's calm down," the judge told both sides after asking that the witness — Doug Larson, a former outside Trump Organization appraiser — be escorted out. A lawyer for Attorney General Letitia James of New York objected, without naming Trump, to the "exhortations" coming from the defense table. Soon enough — this time with the testimony highlighted on an overhead screen — the emails-waving Trump lawyer was back shouting, "You lied yesterday, Mr.

BANGKOK (AP) — Markets fell in Europe and Asia after China reported Wednesday that its economy grew at a 4.9% annual pace in July-September, down from 6.3% in the previous quarter. The future for the S&P 500 lost 0.2% and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.1% lower. Weak global demand and the property industry remain the biggest shadows overhanging the economy in the near term, economists said. “The wider data on the property sector remained weak, although green shoots are appearing,” Capital Economics said in a report. Bank of New York Mellon rose 3.8% after it also reported stronger profit than expected for the latest quarter.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares fell in Asia as investors braced Monday for an expected invasion by Israel in the Gaza Strip. On Friday, the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude oil jumped $4.78 to settle at $87.69. Early Monday, U.S. crude oil was unchanged while Brent was up 3 cents at $90.92 a barrel. Worries about the war pulled Treasury yields lower, which often happens when investors head for safer investments during times of stress. BANGKOK (AP) — Asian markets were sharply lower on Wednesday after Wall Street tumbled as it focused on the downside of a surprisingly strong job market: the likelihood that interest rates will stay high. Expectations that interest rates will stay high are pressuring stocks as Treasury yields rise in the bond market. High yields also make borrowing more expensive for companies and households across the economy, which can hurt corporate profits. Investors increasingly are taking the Federal Reserve at its word that it will keep its main interest rate high for a long time in order to drive down inflation. Several other challenges are also tugging at Wall Street besides higher yields.

The U.S. Federal Reserve building is pictured in Washington, March 18, 2008. That thought was echoed by Cleveland Fed chief Loretta Mester, who said: "I suspect we may well need to raise the fed funds rate once more this year." Either way, this is not the sound of a Fed who thinks the inflation battle is won. Fed hawkishness, however, has kept futures markets pricing a 50-50 chance of another quarter point rate hike to the 5.50-5.75% range by year-end. An F-35 that went missing in South Carolina may have flown on autopilot for a time after its pilot ejected, though it's still unclear. In 1970, an aircraft nicknamed the "Cornfield Bomber" pulled off a surprising unmanned landing with only minor damage after it's pilot bailed out. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile it's currently unclear what happened to the missing jet, it wouldn't be the first time a plane has carried on without its pilot. On February 2, 1970, pilot Maj. Gary Foust ejected from a Convair F-106 Delta Dart interceptor aircraft during a training exercise when the jet had entered a flat spin. After Foust ejected, the aircraft nose-dived before stabilizing, then remained airborne for a time, while Foust drifted around 8,000 feet above the ground in his parachute.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Lauch Faircloth of North Carolina, a onetime conservative Democrat who switched late in his career to the Republicans and then got elected to Congress, died Thursday. Before the end of the 1998 campaign, Faircloth had fired his campaign consultant and tried to link Edwards to Bill Clinton and portray him as out of step with moderates and conservatives. Sanford rewarded Faircloth with an appointment to the state Highway Commission, which he chaired later under Gov. Faircloth was putting together his own Senate bid in 1986 when his old friend Sanford entered the race, causing him to stand down. But the U.S. jobs picture underscores the "soft-landing" consensus - something Tuesday's updates on global business surveys from last month suggest may not be the case elsewhere. Even though messy workouts of China's ongoing property bust were some relief - as real estate giant Country Garden made some last minute dollar bond payments - the funk in the wider economy clearly persists. That saw the euro fall back against the dollar to levels not seen since mid-June. But that provided little solace to sterling , which was also pummelled by the dollar to its lowest since June. The sour business polls took some heat out of the recent oil price rebound , but did little to calm the long end of the bond market.

The swaps allow exporters to place their dollars with banks and get yuan instead, but through a contract that will eventually reverse the flows and give them back their dollars. However, while they remove a much-needed source of dollar supplies into spot yuan markets, analysts reckon Chinese monetary authorities can't really force exporters to convert dollars. When exporters swap higher-yielding dollars for the cheaper yuan for even 3 months, they get local currency for business needs and also earn a pick-up of an annualised 3.5% on the swap deal. "By trading FX swaps, exporters can postpone their settlements while meeting their yuan demand," said Becky Liu, head of China macro strategy at Standard Chartered Bank. Exporters' swaps, meanwhile, give state banks a pile of dollars to use in their yuan operations, in which they can undertake swaps to acquire the dollars from the onshore forwards market and sell them in the spot market to stem fast yuan declines.

During the operation, Mr. Duprey sold narcotics to one of the officers. A man, who the police did not identify, then wheeled a motorbike over to Mr. Duprey. The Foot Locker store in Broomfield, Colorado is seen on November 17, 2016. The athletic-wear retailer also missed expectations for quarterly sales, said it would pause its dividend payouts and flagged softer demand in July, which is typically when back-to-school shopping starts. The shares of the company's larger rivals Nike (NKE.N), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS.N) and Under Armour fell between 2% and 4% in premarket trade. Foot Locker's warnings kept the pressure on sportswear retailers after they tumbled on Tuesday when Dick's Sporting Goods also cut its full-year profit targets, slammed by hits to its margins from retail theft. Foot Locker also said its quarter was hit by inventory shrink, or retail theft, and steeper discounts.

Raindrops hang on a sign for Wall Street outside the New York Stock Exchange in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., October 26, 2020. The deadline for so-called 13-F filings for the second quarter is on Monday. 2023 has been a better year for investors, with the S&P 500 (.SPX) stock market index up 16% in the first half after a 20% drop in full-year 2022. IPhone maker Apple (AAPL.O), retailer Amazon, electric vehicle maker Tesla (TSLA.O), chip maker Nvidia and technology company Meta are among the group that accounted for 73% of the market's gains. Second-quarter filings suggest many hedge funds ramped up their bets on technology stocks that suffered last year.

China retail sales data due on Tuesday will show whether spending can cling to the around-3% growth rate in June - a far cry from the double-digit readings earlier in the year. Meanwhile, investors will get another look at the health of the U.S. consumer with Tuesday’s retail sales report. June retail sales, released last month, rose less than expected, but nonetheless showed consumers weathered higher interest rates. Chart shows change in U.S. retail sales on a monthly basis. After shooting to a nine-year peak of 6.55% - prompting the central bank to step in to restore calm - yields have settled around 0.58%.

Producer prices fell at the fastest pace in over seven years in June and consumer prices teetered on the verge of deflation, data showed earlier in the week. Authorities are likely to roll out more stimulus steps including fiscal spending to fund big-ticket infrastructure projects, more support for consumers and private firms, and some property policy easing, policy insiders and economists said. The central bank cut the RRR - the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves - in March. China also cut its benchmark lending rates by a modest 10 basis points in June, the first such reduction in 10 months. But the central bank is likely to be wary of cutting lending rates further.

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike DolanWorld markets leaned positively into another critical U.S. inflation report later on Wednesday, seeding a dollar (.DXY) slide to two-month lows that's revved-up yen and sterling gains. And June's CPI readout should be a marker if the consensus forecast for almost a full percentage-point drop in the headline inflation rate to two year lows of just 3.1% is borne out. Still, encouraged by a screed of other positive disinflation signals this week, U.S. markets are relatively buoyant going into the release and still feel the end of the Fed rate rise campaign is nigh. UK bank stocks pushed higher on the rates view and a relatively clean bill of health from Wednesday's financial stability report from the BOE.
