‘R.M.N.’ Review: A Bleak Diagnosis for Romania
  + stars: | 2023-04-27 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Deep into “R.M.N.,” an anatomy of the human condition, this powerhouse of a movie gets deeper, creepier and unnervingly familiar. At that point, dozens of residents in a Romanian village have gathered for an impromptu town hall. I’ve called the movie an anatomy, but this scene is more of an autopsy. “R.M.N.” is set in motion by Matthias (Marin Grigore), a hulking brute who stalks the movie like a threat. He moves back in with his wary wife and young son, and pursues and beds a former lover.
Senators rebuked the Federal Reserve for failing to prevent the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank despite identifying risks beforehand, while the central bank’s top regulator blamed the firm’s executives for not fixing its problems. In an appearance Tuesday before the Senate Banking Committee, Michael Barr , the Fed’s vice chairman for banking supervision, defended the actions of the Fed’s supervisors and said the central bank had privately raised concerns with SVB before its March 10 collapse and had given the lender poor ratings for managing its risks.
The S & P gained another 1.6% last week even after slipping back 1% Friday. Market technicals strengthening Along the way, the technical characteristics of the market are winning converts for the bullish cause. Surely at the S & P 500 level, above 18-times forward profit estimates is a demanding bogey implying so-so returns. The equal-weight S & P is closer to the longer-term average at 16, and mid-cap stocks still modestly valued compared their history. The S & P 500 is compounding so far in 2023 at a 120% annualized rate of return so yeah, expect some give-back and gut-checking.

CNN —At one point during Mike Birbiglia’s new Broadway show, “The Old Man and The Pool,” he jokingly scolds the audience for laughing over a story about the death of a man in a YMCA pool. One after another, someone’s howl becomes contagious, and the laughter keeps going for several minutes as Birbiglia watches. “The Old Man and the Pool” has been in Birbiglia’s mind in some version for about six years now. I think at the time it was called ‘The YMCA Pool.’ And then we were shut down. “There’s no answer to any of it.”“The Old Man and The Pool” is currently playing at Lincoln Center in New York City.
champion Amy Schneider testified before an Ohio House of Representatives committee meeting Wednesday against a bill that would restrict gender-affirming medical care for minors. After receiving gender-affirming care, "for the first time in my life, that alarm went silent, and I knew peace and quiet for the first time." Rep. Latyna Humphrey, a Democrat, asked Schneider if she has ever regretted receiving gender-affirming care or experienced suicidal thoughts after her transition. “We’ve made quite a few concessions, and that’s to bring this to a middle ground,” Click said of the substitute bill. Four states — Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee — passed laws restricting gender-affirming care for minors.
The President of Tajikistan, a firm ally of Russia, appeared to berate Putin at an international summit. 'We do not need anything; just to be respected," Rahmon said. According to the New Voice of Ukraine, Rahmon also told Putin not to treat central Asian countries "as the former Soviet Union." The incident follows surprising public criticism from India's leader, another ally of Putin, of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in September, India's Prime Minister Modi told Putin that "now is not the time for war."
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia conducts the Orthodox Christmas service at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, Russia, January 6, 2022. REUTERS/Maxim ShemetovSept 26 (Reuters) - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has said that Russian soldiers who die in the war against Ukraine will be cleansed of all their sins, days after President Vladimir Putin ordered the country's first mobilisation since World War Two. "Many are dying on the fields of internecine warfare," Kirill, 75, said in his first Sunday address since the mobilisation order. Kirill's support for the war in Ukraine has deepened a rift between the Russian branch of the Orthodox Church and other wings of Orthodoxy around the world. My middle child, Kimbal, started farm-to-table restaurants and is teaching children to build fruit and vegetable gardens in underserved schools. I tell them I did it by teaching them about hard work and letting them follow their interests. I started working for my dad when I was eight years old. When Kaye and I were 12, we started working in the clinic as receptionists. I taught them them importance of working hard and doing good things.
