Exit George SantosVideo Ad Feedback SE Cupp: Trump didn't pave the way for George Santos. How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

Billionaire investor Ron Baron told CNBC on Friday that he expects SpaceX to IPO its Starlink satellite internet service "in 2027 or so." "We think that by the time they go public with SpaceX, with Starlink … in 2027 or so, four years, the company will be worth $250 billion to $300 billion," Baron said, speaking to CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin. Earlier this month, Baron told MarketWatch his eponymous firm's ownership of SpaceX stock was currently valued at about $1.7 billion. Last year, Musk told employees that taking the business public wasn't likely until 2025 or later. SpaceX's valuation has soared to about $150 billion, with Starlink seen as a key economic driver of the company's goals.

Meanwhile, Boeing and Spirit, a supplier for the U.S. planemaker and European rival Airbus(AIR.PA), are contending with a lapse involving misdrilled holes on Boeing’s 737 MAX. Boeing is expected to report a loss of $2.23 per diluted share, compared with a loss of $5.49 a year ago. Spirit is projected to report a loss of $1.03 a share, compared to a loss of $1.22 a year earlier, according to LSEG data. The target may no longer be achievable if Boeing can no longer meet its goal of delivering 400 737s this year. Spirit, which reports Nov. 1, has already revealed preliminary results as part of a new price agreement with Boeing.

The Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) is unveiled during its launch in Mumbai, India, August 18, 2023. Reuters reported last month that the Indian government is working on a new EV policy that would slash import taxes for automakers that commit to some local manufacturing. Audi is trying to catch up with its peers, BMW (BMWG.DE) and Mercedes (MBGn.DE), in the transition to electric. Currently, the company's India arm only makes internal combustion engines locally, which is used in its petrol cars. After four models launched last month, six out of 16 models in Audi India's offerings are electric cars, which are entirely imported and sold in the country priced between $136,000 and $234,000.

It led to a lower quality of life and mental health issues and probably contributed to his death a few years ago. Despite all the advances in science, we don’t know why some people, even when they try desperately, can’t seem to lose weight. I begged my father, who was also a physician, to lose weight, and he never could. I became so disheartened at my inability to affect my weight that it harmed my mental health. My mental health, and even my temperament, improved so much that my whole family rejoiced.

In an interview, O'Leary said this would not deter JetZero and its radical design. The Air Force said materials and manufacturing advances have made production more attainable. Whereas Boeing aimed to commission new engines for its abandoned project, JetZero says aerodynamic savings allow it to exploit existing models. Capital Alpha Partners analyst Byron Callan said the decision to back JetZero suggested Air Force "frustration" with traditional aerospace companies' use of cash to favor shareholders rather than bigger developmental risks. "One way to potentially change behaviors is to award contracts to smaller firms like JetZero," he wrote.

But the plunge in the deal pipeline prompted soul-searching and job-hopping among investment bankers accustomed to a feast. Barclays, which has struggled to retain bankers following a shake-up in the management of its investment banking division, has lost at least nine top technology bankers in recent weeks. Traditionally, smaller firms have been reluctant to offer investment bankers guaranteed compensation, in order to have more of their pay tied to performance. Alan Johnson, managing director of compensation consultancy Johnson Associates, said that first-year guarantees were common practice in the hiring of investment bankers, but second-year guarantee used to be rare. "You get paid a higher percentage of revenue than in a big bank, but you have to generate the revenue with perhaps less help," Johnson said.

Despite just experiencing a pandemic in which over one million Americans died, health care reform doesn’t seem to be a top political issue in the United States right now. The American health care system is broken. We spend an extraordinary amount on health care, far more than anyone else. Others believe that the health care systems in different countries couldn’t work here because of our system’s size. And much of health care is regulated at the state level, so our size isn’t really an outlier.

We had to keep the service running.”Laura Kaplan volunteered for the Janes, later immortalizing the group in her book, "The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service." The Supreme Court refused Monday to consider the appeal of a disbarred lawyer jailed for contempt of court after he won a $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron in an environmental lawsuit in Ecuador . A group of Ecuadorians represented by Donziger filed a class-action suit against Chevron in Manhattan federal court in 1993. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit were awarded $9.5 billion from Chevron by a judge in Ecuador. Chevron then filed a legal action in Manhattan federal court and won an injunction against the enforcement of the judgment in any U.S. court. In the Chevron case, Gorsuch wrote, "However much the district court may have thought Mr. Donziger warranted punishment, the prosecution in this case broke a basic constitutional promise essential to ourliberty."

Eggs and bacon are finally getting cheaper

The cost of eggs is finally falling, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Inflation cooled down overall, and egg prices fell 6.7% last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index release on Tuesday. The price of bacon also decreased by 1.5%, and even cheese and orange juice experienced modest declines in cost. Inflation impacted the cost of eggs as the avian flu began to spread in earnest last February. The egg news is welcome, especially as food prices increased slightly overall, by about 0.4% compared to January's 0.5% increase.
