Liang told Business Insider he expects 90% of AI computing workloads will be in inference in the not-too-distant future. AdvertisementThat's why several startups are charging aggressively into the inference market — emphasizing where they might outperform the goliath in the space. Speed is an important factor when multiple AI models talk to each other and waiting for an answer can dampen the magic of generative AI. The number of tokens per second that can be consumed (when a prompt goes in) and generated (when a response comes out) is a common metric for AI computing speed. The U.S. dollar rose broadly on Thursday, recovering from an earlier tumble in the immediate aftermath of the Federal Reserve's outsized interest rate cut that had been largely priced in by markets. Fed policymakers on Wednesday projected the benchmark interest rate would fall by another half of a percentage point by the end of this year, a full percentage point next year and half of a percentage point in 2026, though they said the outlook that far into the future is necessarily uncertain. "So to expect an easing today because of what the Fed has done seems a little bit too hard to believe." MANILA, Philippines — Philippine celebrity pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God,” pleaded not guilty on Friday to a charge of sex trafficking, his lawyer said. “He is innocent,” lawyer Israelito Torreon told reporters after an arraignment in Manila. Quiboloy was also due to enter his plea later on Friday to charges of child abuse before another court. Quiboloy and four other co-accused arrived in a police minibus around 45 minutes before his scheduled arraignment. The statement did not say how many people had come forward. The pastor has denied wrongdoing and his lawyers, Ferdinand Topacio and Israelito Torreon, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Quiboloy is a longtime friend of Rodrigo Duterte, who was Philippines’ president until two years ago and frequently appeared on the pastor’s television shows. It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy. Marcos said that he did not understand Duterte’s apology but that it was “her prerogative” to make it, local media reported.

How plaid became popular for school uniforms
  + stars: | 2024-09-05 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —As students return to school, one patterned textile now synonymous with uniforms will make its seasonal reappearance on pleated skirts, jumpers and ties: plaid. It’s a family of textiles with broad scholarly appeal, with both religious and secular schools worldwide incorporating plaid into uniforms, from Mexico to Japan to Australia. Centuries of romanticizing Highlander clanship and identity has likely influenced our contemporary understanding of the textile, Maxwell noted. But the textile didn’t become a fixture of school uniforms until the 1960s, according to historian and educator Sally Dwyer-McNulty, who authored “Common Threads: A Cultural History of Clothing in American Catholicism” in 2014. (Dwyer-McNulty herself attended two different Catholic schools in Philadelphia, wearing plaid uniforms through high school).

At the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Rep. Emergency!”If you’re up on the latest TikTok dance trends, you may have heard this refrain looped over a wobbly electronic bassline punctuated by high-pitched noises. Beat,” belongs to a Filipino electronic dance music subgenre called budots. It first emerged as a dance and was associated early on with youth drug culture, per Fritz Flores, who wrote an undergraduate thesis on the dance craze. Some scholars have also linked budots dance moves to art forms of the indigenous Badjao people. Though the initial TikTok craze was divorced from the history of budots and its signature dance moves, it also spawned a spinoff trend in which those in the know demonstrated the proper way to dance budots — shining a spotlight on a slice of Filipino culture.

Since then we’ve watched cracks spread throughout this edifice, dividing groups and institutions that once seemed to move in lock step. These fault lines include the split between a more ideological academic culture, where wokeness seems entrenched, and corporate and media realms, where its hold has somewhat weakened. They include the divisions between donors, university administrators and activists exposed and heightened by the Hamas attacks and the Israel-Gaza war. This means money: a surge of tens of millions of dollars into Democratic coffers. CNN —The Philippines has announced plans to ban offshore gaming operators, targeting an industry that mostly caters to Chinese gamblers and has sparked growing alarm from law enforcement over its alleged connections to organized crime. Known locally as POGOs, Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators have spawned across the country, both licensed and illicit, employing tens of thousands of Chinese and foreign nationals. Ezra Acayan/Getty ImagesThere are 46 licensed offshore gaming operators and dozens more illicit gambling hubs in the Philippines, according to the country’s gaming regulator, which Marcos has ordered to close by the end of the year. Since then, the Philippines has become a major hub for online gaming catering to tens of thousands of players based in China. “Even if overseas casinos are legally opened, cross-border gambling by Chinese citizens is suspected of violating the laws of our country,” the embassy said in a statement.
