Last summer, two data centers in London experienced heatwave-linked failures, with the incident affecting clinical IT systems at a number of hospitals. Data centers have become "a very important aspect of running entire business models, and even our day-to-day lives. Losing the information processed by data centers would be detrimental not only to companies and individuals, but also governments and society as a whole. This puts the firms that develop and operate data centers in a tricky position, not least because today's facilities are resource hungry. Companies can deploy a range of innovations to put these metrics at the core of tomorrow's data centers.

"For most of our history, profitable wasn't the first thing that came up when you asked someone about Uber," Khosrowshahi said on Uber's second-quarter conference call Aug. 1. The $1 a ride alone can add up to $4,000 to a driver's annual revenue, the company says. All of them will compete for customers on Uber's platform much as hotels search for business on Expedia.com – a business once run by Khosrowshahi. Indeed, one threat to Uber's current status as a market darling is if AV makers, especially Tesla, decide to compete with Uber directly for riders, Zino said. Khosrowshahi told Sellers that 10-20% of Uber drivers may soon be robots, but said he still thinks more people will be driving for Uber than there are today.

I tried driving for Uber and Lyft from 2015 until 2020 off and on. AdvertisementAdvertisementIf I work one 10-hour shift a week, I can remain an Alto driver, and as a driver you're paid by the hour — not by how many trips you book. I recently had a schedule change at my full-time job to mornings, so now I work evenings as an Alto driver. Driving with Alto has the structure and certainty of a full-time jobWith Alto, we have set shifts, like regular employees going into an office. As an Alto driver, you also have the option to get health benefits and a 401(k) because all drivers are W2 employees.

CNN —California authorities have asked General Motors to “immediately” take some of its Cruse robotaxis off the road after autonomous vehicles were involved in two collisions – including one with an active fire truck – last week in San Francisco. The California DMV said that Cruise has agreed to the request, and a spokesperson from Cruise told CNN that the company is investigating the firetruck crash as well. General Motors acquired Cruise Automation in 2016 for $1 billion, solidifying its place in the autonomous vehicles race, but many companies have since scaled back, or abandoned their driverless car ambitions. Ridesharing giants Uber and Lyft have both sold autonomous vehicle units in recent years. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has been optimistic about autonomous vehicle technology, has yet to fully deliver on his promise.

"Just think: If I would've given him $250,000 on a [$10 million] valuation, it'd be billions," Cuban said. Specifically, given Uber's market capitalization of $90.1 billion as of Friday, Cuban's $250,000 would be worth $2.25 billion today. But, still," said Cuban, whose net worth is currently estimated at $5.1 billion. Cuban and Kalanick already had history at the time: Cuban invested $1.7 million in Kalanick's previous venture, a peer-to-peer networking startup called Red Swoosh, in 2005. However, Cuban said he didn't agree with Kalanick's $10 million valuation of the startup at the time: "I said, 'I'll do it at [a] $5 million valuation...' for Uber!"

The Minneapolis city council has advanced a bill that could raise the minimum wage for rideshare drivers. "Prices could double, and only the most wealthy could still afford a ride," said Lyft. The Minneapolis city council's move to hike the minimum wage for rideshare drivers has Lyft threatening to exit the city if the bill becomes law. Rival rideshare company Uber also lashed out against the law. To be sure, data from Rakuten Intelligence shows a 92% rise in Uber and Lyft ride costs between 2018 and 2021.

The news came after employees brought up concerns about a DEI event on "Karens," per the NYT. The term has been used to call out white women who act racist in public. A DEI executive at Uber who upset employees by hosting an event that highlighted the "spectrum of the American white woman's experience" has been put on leave, according to reports. Lee hosted a pair of events this over the past few weeks called "Don't Call Me Karen" — an exploration of the Karen persona that featured white women speakers, the Times reported. All told, there is a nearly $6 trillion in revenue opportunity from AI across the internet industry, a March report from Morgan Stanley found. "UBER/LYFT/DASH already use ML [machine learning] in their matching algorithms (matching rides/eaters with drivers/couriers)," Morgan Stanley wrote in its report. AI tailwind for Uber Uber has both its ride-sharing service and UberEats food delivery business. According to Morgan Stanley, AI and machine learning will be a tailwind to network efficiency. "The extent to which AI drives substantial improvements in top-line growth could lead to teens upside [for the stock]," Morgan Stanley said.
Her mother Sarah — a former deli shop owner — was bored with retirement and had decided to open an ice cream shop in Bethesda, Maryland. "To be honest, at first I was like, 'ice cream shop?'" Running the ice cream shopDespite Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream successful grand opening, it took over six months for the business to become "a well-oiled machine," Park says. Instead, Park and her mother donate ice cream to local nonprofits and community organizations, which has attracted loyal customers in the Bethesda area. Within a few months of opening the first store, Park realized the business didn't have to be limited to just "a mom-and-daughter shop."

Hertz has also told analysts that the growing EV rideshare market can be a buffer against traditional quarterly peak to trough experienced in the leisure business. The benefits of using an EV begin with a $1 per ride credit to the driver for using an EV, Uber spokeswoman Alix Anfang said.
Days after taking over as the new CEO of Lyft (LYFT) last month, Risher announced plans to “significantly reduce” the company’s workforce and stressed that the decision was his. The next week, Lyft (LYFT) revealed the extent of the layoffs: 26% of the staff, or more than 1,000 employees, would lose their jobs. It has lagged behind its chief rival, Uber (UBER), in recovering from the pandemic shock to business. And that really is Jeff Bezos,” Risher told CNN. “It’s not our focus to be part of somebody else’s company,” Risher said.
AI is at an "inflection point" that could allow investors and companies tap into a $6 trillion opportunity, Morgan Stanley said. "We see AI accelerating digital transformation and tech diffusion across the economy," analyst Brian Nowak said in a note. AI-driven search tools could power stronger recommendation engines for social media and e-commerce, create better content-production tools and improve shared-economy marketplaces for transportation and other services, the bank said in the note. "We see AI accelerating digital transformation and tech diffusion across the economy," Morgan Stanley Research's internet analyst Brian Nowak said in a research note. One person may represent a danger on the roads at age 65, while another may be perfectly fine at age 85. Upgrades can help them stay safe, including technologies to keep drivers from drifting out a lane, backup cameras and various other detection systems. Special licensing requirements for elderly drivers can help screen out problems with vision and cognition. Some states require more frequent renewal for older drivers, or demand regular vision checks, or prohibit online renewals altogether. For a few hundred dollars a year, you could get a $1 million policy that should let everyone sleep better at night – both you, and your parents.

Dynamic pricing is being used to set prices for activities beyond ridesharing and concert tickets. Experts warned businesses would most likely implement surge pricing in response to the pandemic. "This strikes me as outrageous for a pedestrian family activity," Yenni told the Journal. Insider previously reported that AI-driven dynamic pricing is making its way through business sectors like retail and grocery stores to keep up with changing market demands post-Covid. A startup meant to help restaurants set their own surge prices has also been created, and has helped some establishments double their profits, Insider's Nancy Luna reported.
In Nov. 2020, California voters approved Proposition 22, which allowed ride-sharing and delivery app makers to classify their drivers as independent contractors. Ride-sharing apps, including Uber and Lyft, can continue to treat their drivers as independent contractors, a California appeals court ruled on Monday, overturning a lower-court decision that barred them from doing so. It was the most expensive ballot issue in California's history, with ride-share companies contributing over $181 million to the "Yes" campaign. A group of ride-share drivers sought to strike down Proposition 22, and won a lower court decision. "Proposition 22 does not intrude on the Legislature's workers' compensation authority or violate the single-subject rule," the opinion read.
Stock markets seem to be slowing after a strong start to the year. But though bearish sentiment has seeped into the market, fund manager Barbara Doran is taking a contrarian view. Part of that was just bear market positioning but with the breadth that we saw in January, this is feeling like the start of, dare I say, a bull market," Doran told CNBC's " Street Signs Asia " last week. Stock picks One of Doran's top stock picks is Uber — and she's given the stock upside of between 25% and 50%. And the stock is in the camp where there is no [price-to-earnings] because there's no earnings, but I think there's substantial upside here," she said.
