Biden Undergoes Annual Physical at Walter Reed
  + stars: | 2024-02-28 | by ( Katie Rogers | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden was undergoing the third physical exam of his presidency on Wednesday amid concerns over his age as he campaigns for a second term. Mr. Biden, 81, traveled to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for his annual physical, according to the White House. The White House is expected to release a summary of Mr. Biden’s physical later on Wednesday. Events over the past few weeks have cast a spotlight on Mr. Biden’s age. And Mr. Biden has made unforced errors at events, including recalling interactions with foreign leaders who would have been dead at the time those interactions took place.

Schele Williams first saw “The Wiz” when a tour of the original Broadway production came through Dayton, Ohio. She even used the show’s soaring finale, “Home,” as one of her audition songs. Now, after working on Broadway as an actor (“Aida”) and an associate director (“Motown”), she is directing the first Broadway revival of “The Wiz” in almost 40 years. It’s a chance, Williams said, to celebrate what “The Wiz” has meant to her and to pass the story along to her daughters. Since becoming a Broadway hit in 1975, “The Wiz,” a gospel, soul and R&B take on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz, largely composed by Charlie Smalls, with a book by William F. Brown, has been a vibrant cornerstone of Black culture.

But with Mr. Trump’s intervention persuading congressional Republicans to abandon the border deal that they themselves had demanded, Mr. Biden finally has an opportunity to shift from defense to offense. “Joe Biden blamed President Trump for the border crisis that Biden himself created,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the former president. Mr. Trump made clear that he saw the deal not as a solution but a threat to his bid to reclaim his office. Image Mr. Trump ridiculed the idea that Mr. Biden could deflect blame after three years of failing to secure the border. For three years, Republicans had a clear story line when it came to the border — Mr. Biden either intentionally or incompetently opened the floodgates.

Americans spend, on average, more than two and a half hours on social media each day. His book offers practical strategies for stepping back, reevaluating and unsubscribing from the ideas, habits and tech engagements that keep us from happiness. Advances in health care, like cutting-edge diagnostic tools, are just one example of the incredible benefits of the tech revolution. The crushing pace of technology doesn’t allow for the milliseconds it takes for us to be conscious enough to step back. This is a tall task, but I believe the more people can hear that voice, the healthier our society will be.

At some point during your teenage years, you probably developed an idea of what "success" as an adult would look like. Sticking to that definition as an adult is a surefire way to end up unhappy, according to serial hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling business author Chip Conley. "And we either tried to emulate that and live up to it, or we in some cases rebelled against it. Rather, you should "acknowledge the negative aspects ... [and] evaluate whether there's another way to think about the situation," she noted. I wonder if I can change anything about this situation or my expectations about it," wrote Maenpaa.

Teenagers, who are still developing their identities, are especially prone to take psychological labels to heart. Plus, many of the skills taught in these programs were developed for people coping with severe mental illness, not everyday stresses. Such interventions work best with steady, consistent, hands-on support from a dedicated therapist. To be sure, psychologists have done some important and innovative work making mental health interventions more broadly accessible. But although such offerings fill gaps in our mental health infrastructure, they cannot take the place of more time- and resource-intensive forms of care.

Palestinian intelligence officials would be provided with target information by Israel, and Palestinian forces would be expected to take on missions previously conducted by the Israel Defense Forces to detain those targets. Even worse, in 2008 and ’09, when Israel’s Operation Cast Lead, which resulted in over 1,300 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, sparked protests in the West Bank, it was the Palestinian Authority Security Forces that physically stood between demonstrators and the Israel Defense Forces. In hindsight, it was perhaps the death knell for the legitimacy of the Palestinian Authority in the eyes of its people. The United States could also start conditioning its military assistance to Israel (as it does for many other recipients) on certain verifiable political conditions being met. Doing so would require structuring assistance in a way that enables Palestinian society control over its own security forces.

The only founders who do it successfully share one trait in common: the resilience to navigate a rocky path filled with unforeseen twists and turns. That's a key lesson that Catalina Daniels and James Sherman took from researching for their new book, "Smart Startups: What Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know — Advice from 18 Harvard Business School Founders." "Having resilience is absolutely essential [for] the emotional makeup of a person in terms of becoming an entrepreneur," Sherman tells CNBC Make It. "If they don't have that type of resilience, they need to learn how to build it up." Reframing the American Landscape
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Hilarie M. Sheets | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
As a painter of the natural world for more than five decades, Kay WalkingStick says it is impossible not to be influenced by the 19th-century Hudson River School’s majestic depictions of the American landscape. “They were selling the American landscape as empty and of course it was not empty; it was populated,” said Ms. WalkingStick, who in her bold, pared-down painting style revisits similar vistas on which she overlays geometric patterns used by the Native tribe connected to that specific land. “I think of it as a reminder that we’re all living on Indian Territory.”The exhibition “Kay WalkingStick/Hudson River School” opens Friday at the New-York Historical Society. It is the 88-year-old Cherokee artist’s largest museum show so far in New York City, where she received her M.F.A. “I wanted to see our Hudson River School collection through Kay’s eyes and how her work helps us to reinterpret the history of landscape painting in North America,” said Wendy Nalani E. Ikemoto, the museum’s senior curator of American art and a Native Hawaiian.

Cutouts depicting images of oil operations are seen outside a building of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in Caracas, Venezuela January 28, 2019. Separate talks between Maduro's envoys and the Venezuelan opposition are expected to follow in Mexico in the coming weeks, according to sources. Washington has been trying to encourage negotiations between Maduro and the political opposition over elections in Venezuela and other demands. The proposal included reframing oil sanctions on Venezuela by amending existing U.S. executive orders or issuing new ones so buyers in Europe and other regions could resume imports of Venezuelan oil in a structured, organized way. Chevron (CVX.N) has been allowed to expand operations in Venezuela and export its oil to the U.S. since November.

Experts warn that boreout is "just as problematic" as burnout and can lead to quiet quitting. "Boreout is basically often the opposite extreme of burnout, but also can be just as problematic in terms of our work experience," Brodsky said in an interview with Insider. Boreout, when left untreated, can lead workers down the path to quiet quitting and disengagement. Monitoring employees leads to 'busyness theater'Some companies are keeping a closer eye on employees by using technology that monitors how much they're working. She explained it's a popular misconception that boreout comes from having inadequate work — workers can still get bored at companies where work piles up.

How I Turned My Errands Into Exercise
  + stars: | 2023-08-26 | by ( Andrew Leonard | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 11-mile round trip left me with dead legs, a sore back and the sneaking suspicion I had made a mistake. What started as a necessity — I had no car, so I must bike — became a strategy: Errands are an opportunity for exercise. I began seeking out new errands just for the exercise they would provide. Running low on Sichuan peppercorns spurred me to cycle the nine-mile round trip to the Chinese supermarket. Earlier this year, I learned that the public library stocked a book about an ancient tomb I was researching, and my first thought was: Excellent, that’s a 4,000-step round trip!

Washington has been trying to encourage negotiations between President Nicolas Maduro and the political opposition over elections in Venezuela and other demands. U.S. President Joe Biden's government is prepared to provide Venezuela sanctions relief if the country moves to restore democracy, the White House said on Wednesday. The White House declined to comment on the oil sanctions reframing proposal. If you're overly consumed about how you're perceived, it could be a sign of social anxiety disorder or social phobia. Reprisals over climate policies come at a time of record-breaking extreme heat across the globe, with July poised to be the hottest month in human history.
