A crash site rediscoveredIn 2016, the agency received a tip the crash site had been rediscovered on farmland in Normandy. D-Day was 80 years ago and the remains of missing service members continue to be uncovered. The results are then compared to a DNA sample from the missing service member’s medical file. In 2009, Stouffer heard about other missing service members being accounted for and reached out to the agency to offer his DNA samples for analysis. Defense Visual Information Distribution ServicePhotos of the three missing airmen were stationed at the dig site, providing what the team calls intrinsic motivation along their search.

In his 1937 book, “Kennebec: Cradle of Americans,” the poet Robert Tristram Coffin called Maine’s sprawling river a “paradise for fish.” But pollution and dams that block spawning runs for Atlantic salmon, sturgeon and shad put an end to that world. The Kennebec River now runs mostly clean, thanks to laws that reduced pollution. The commission should order the removal of the dams. Dams are being removed from rivers across the country. Last year, 80 were demolished, reconnecting obstructed waterways with 1,160 upstream river miles.

Nikki Haley plans to vote for Donald Trump, she said Wednesday in her first public remarks since exiting the Republican presidential primary more than two months ago. Earlier this year, Haley and Trump were engaged in what had become a bitter primary feud. Yet even in her absence, she’s been winning votes in one Republican primary after another. And I made that pitch to President Trump and also to Nikki Haley.”Norman said that while Haley has not expressed interest in joining Trump’s ticket, he believes she would be interested. As other former Republican contenders have fallen in line behind Trump, Haley has intentionally kept her distance – not hostile, but also not hungry for his adulation.

The bright side of divorce, according to experts
  + stars: | 2024-03-19 | by ( Madeline Holcombe | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Divorce rates have been steadily trending downward in the United States, according to recent data, but marriages ending are still a common, disruptive experience. Most people probably don’t head into marriage anticipating divorce — but for those who find themselves in one, there are ways to encourage compassion for one another and ultimately build something stronger, experts said. Grieving the lossA divorce can be amicable yet still marked by loss and grief, said Rebecca Hendrix, a marriage and family therapist in New York. Support can come from a therapist, a religious leader, friends, a divorce support group, or even books and media that make you feel less alone, she added. Divorce may motivate some reflection on ways you want to make changes or even launch the first call you ever make to a therapist, Hendrix said.

And most important of all, how does a toilet work at 40,000 feet? Matthias Balk/dpa/picture alliance/Getty ImagesUsing water to flush airplane toilets is a no go because of aircraft weight restrictions. When you press the flush button, a valve opens at the bottom of the toilet bowl, connecting it to a pipe below. Airplanes have never deliberately shot their toilet waste into the atmosphere, not even in the old days, says Jones. The onboard air circulation of today isn’t just about keeping healthy – it also controls how passengers feel, especially on longhaul flights.

I understand why many in an Israeli society still traumatized by the Hamas surprise attack on Oct. 7 don’t want to hear talk of a Palestinian state, even in a demilitarized form. But for many Israelis that was true for years before the Gaza war. To continue ignoring the subject now would be a grave error. Israel needs to shape it, not ignore it. This will force Israel’s Arab allies to distance themselves from the Jewish state.

How to Exercise When You Just Do Not Want To
  + stars: | 2024-01-24 | by ( Danielle Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +10 min
You set a goal to exercise regularly, but when the moment comes to get moving, your mind unleashes a torrent of excuses: I’m tired. I asked experts in exercise science and psychology to share their best advice for conquering common reasons people struggle to build an exercise habit. If you face a jam-packed daily schedule, try starting small, said Kate Baird, an exercise physiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. When even the word “exercise” makes you feel tired, experts recommend meeting your body where it is — in a few different ways. Exercise carries some risks, but remind yourself that the benefits of physical activity outweigh them, Dr. Phillips said.

The first time I met my best friend Kesia's mom, Kate, she impressed me with her gentle disposition, as well as her amazing cooking. I hadn't really considered the possibility that I could become friends with my own parents, let alone the parents of my friends. When I was going through a hard time, Kate and I reconnectedBerlin was good, but challenging. When I told Kesia that I was struggling with bad depression, she suggested Kate and I connect, because we were going through the same thing. In the beginning, I was mostly worried about how my mental health struggles could affect my role as a mother.

I was giggling the whole time as it's, for lack of better words, pretty silly," Miller told BI. Miller told BI her highlight of the whole experience was the community that had formed around it. "It's honestly brought me to tears multiple times seeing grown men and women thanking eachother for finding bits of their childhood they thought were lost forever," Miller told BI.

A dam burst last week on the right, and a wave of grotesque antisemitism poured out all over the internet. Some of these people worked for the right wing’s biggest names, including Tucker Carlson, Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump. On Nov. 3, Owens posted on social media, “No government anywhere has a right to commit a genocide, ever. And maybe he loves Israel and he loves America too.” Owens, he said, “is a bit more America first. They are part of a wave of refugees — more than two million — who have traveled back and forth between Ukraine and their temporary homes in other European countries to visit relatives, obtain official documents or check on their property. Trains crossing into Ukraine are often packed with families returning for the school holidays, in many cases to visit the husbands and fathers left behind since the government barred most men from leaving during the war. Historians and sociologists say the scale of these trips is unusual in recent history, owing in good part to the geography of the conflict in Ukraine, where vast swaths of territory remain relatively safe and are accessible from the rest of mainland Europe. The brief returns, those experts add, show that Ukrainian refugees are adapting to the war as it drags on, trying to strike a balance between staying in safer lands abroad and reconnecting with their past lives at home. Ioulia Shukan, a sociologist at Paris Nanterre University who studies the social impact of the war in Ukraine, said it was a question of “rebuilding a relationship with your homeland without being completely resettled.” She said that medical appointments, a fixture of everyday life, contributed to restoring “a semblance of normality” even if they required an extensive and potentially dangerous journey.
