WASHINGTON, Jan 4 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Commerce Committee chair Maria Cantwell on Wednesday said the panel intended to hold hearings after Southwest Airlines' (LUV.N) recent meltdown that led to nearly 16,000 flight cancellations in the week ending Dec. 29. The FAA's operations must be reauthorized by Sept. 30 and the measure has traditionally been used to advance aviation reforms. The Southwest flight cancellations have been cited by some lawmakers as evidence that Congress needs to strengthen protections for air travelers. Buttigieg has repeatedly vowed to hold Southwest "accountable" if it fails to fulfill commitments to customers for "controllable delays and cancellations." That one would require airlines to provide non-expiring vouchers when passengers are unable to fly for certain pandemic-related reasons.
Debate over federal funding of food stamps—formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—is expected to intensify next year. WASHINGTON—House Republicans had a tough time passing the last farm bill, when they had a sizable majority in 2018. It’s about to get much harder. The bill, always a big lift for any Congress, is typically reauthorized every five years. The current version expires at the end of September next year, setting up a looming legislative headache for GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, who will have a slim majority if he is elected speaker in January.
He also pointed to impending risks to Social Security based on plans floated by certain Republican lawmakers, namely Sens. What's more, it would mean letting two of the most important laws that established Social Security and Medicare expire, he said. It is unclear what his opponent Kean's stance is on Social Security and Medicare. While that's in keeping with years past, the difference this year is Social Security has been more of a front-burner issue. "Usually, it's a lot of lip service to Social Security and how they think it's a great program."
Gray wolves are being fatally poisoned in the remote northeast corner of Washington state, according to state wildlife officials, who said Monday that six have been found dead. Two carcasses were discovered recently and four were found in February, the state Fish and Wildlife Department reported. Gray wolves are listed by the state as endangered, and they're federally endangered in the western two-thirds of the state. The wolves, part of the Wedge pack, roam the northeast part of the state in Stevens County. Fish and Wildlife officials said there were 206 known wolves in 33 packs in Washington at the end of 2021.
Stripping away the right of communities of color to equal representation is just the latest effort by anti-voter politicians to destroy voting rights in America. Just 16 years ago, the Voting Rights Act was reauthorized unanimously by the Senate and signed into law by President George W. Bush. Now, politicians are showing that they do not want Black communities to have a fair voice in government by blocking any attempt to restore federal protections for voting rights, such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. This ongoing assault on voting rights calls for a renewal of the civil rights movement. We must stand against politicians who wish to strip away our democracy and threaten our voting rights.

REUTERS/Tom Brenner/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has been drastically under-counting the number of state prison and arrest-related deaths, including failing to count at least 990 deaths in 2021 alone, a bipartisan Senate investigation has found. "Of the 990 uncounted deaths, 341 were prison deaths disclosed on states’ public websites and 649 were arrest-related deaths disclosed in a reliable, public database," they said. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterThe report found 70% of the records the department collected on state prison deaths in 2021 were missing at least one data field required by law. A Justice Department report issued on Friday addressed many of the concerns around prison death reporting, saying it "recognizes the importance of collecting complete and accurate data to inform strategies for reducing deaths in custody."
Some victims of sexual assault are paying out of pocket for their emergency room care, even though federal law requires that their forensic exams be free. The Violence Against Women Act, a federal law enacted in 1994, stipulates that people cannot be charged for a forensic exam after a sexual assault. The new research did not differentiate between costs that should be covered under federal law and other supplementary medical services. Salganicoff said several organizations that assist victims of sexual assault provide lists of hospitals with forensic exam providers. According to the KFF report, some states offer more free medical services associated with the forensic exam than others.
