CNN —Mexican lawmakers were forced to suspend debate on a controversial judicial reform after protesters broke down the doors of the Senate building and forced their way into the upper house’s session hall. But as the crowd broke into the upper house on Tuesday, Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Noroña asked his colleagues to evacuate the hall to avoid confrontations with the protesters. Demonstrators try to break down a door inside the Senate building as a highly contested judicial reform proposal is debated on September 10. Judicial workers protest the government's proposed judicial reform, which would make judges stand for election, on Tuesday. Sarah Stier / Getty Images filePerhaps most impressive is the sheer number of medals won by U.S. women. The country in fourth place, with the closest number of medals to the American women, is Great Britain, with 65 medals. Sixty-seven medals is a record for U.S. women and a record for any country’s women in general, beating the U.S. total of 66 in Tokyo. Biles and Suni Lee went 1-2 on the all-around and became the first two all-around women gold medalists to go head-to-head in an all-around final. The women’s U.S. basketball team won its eighth Olympic gold in a row, earning a shoutout from former President Barack Obama on X.

The last two races of the Paris Games were a gold rush for the U.S., with both the women and men dominating the 4x400-meter relays Saturday. A three-time gold medalist after wins in the 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay, Thomas helped widen the gap in the third lap that McLaughlin-Levrone created in the second. In the last lap, it came down to a race between two gold medalists: Benjamin and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo. With the victory, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson — who ran earlier in the week for the U.S. but not in the final — is now the youngest Olympic track-and-field gold medalist ever. He is also the youngest male U.S. Olympic gold medalist in any sport since 1952.

It’s a shame Gabino Iglesias’ ferocious new novel, “House of Bone and Rain,” couldn’t have been included as supplemental reading. “The Devil Takes You Home” (2022) was, like the two books that preceded it, a horror-noir thriller with elements of other genres thrown in. “House of Bone and Rain” ranges from vigilante thriller to supernatural horror to coming-of-age friendship saga with a strong dose of folklore fantasy. Autonomous trucking startup Waabi announced Tuesday it has raised $200 million in an oversubscribed Series B funding round led by existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures. Waabi's latest funding round also includes Nvidia, a new investor in the company, as well as Porsche and the venture capital arm of Volvo. Using generative AI, Waabi has built a single AI system that is capable of reasoning, just as humans do, and that can come up with problems human minds couldn't conceptualize. The new investor round brings Waabi's total funding to $280 million since being founded in 2021. "This funding round gives us everything we need, both financially and strategically, to launch fully driverless trucks and accelerate our growth in 2025," Urtasun said.

But it’s not just the massive scale of the event that makes it so important in the eyes of observers across the border in the United States. Key to facilitating this shift was the creation of the USMCA trade agreement, which came into effect in 2020 between Mexico, the United States and Canada. “Mexico committed to addressing the two main Mexican issues affecting the United States and that will determine the next election: migration and fentanyl. “But the United States also has to dismantle the network of traffickers within (its own borders). There is a significant network of organized crime in the United States that the administration must arrest, bring to trial, and whose activities it must restrict,” she added.

Ramón Fonseca, who co-founded the law firm at the heart of the Panama Papers leak, died Wednesday night, his lawyer confirmed, while awaiting the verdict in his money-laundering trial in Panama. Mr. Fonseca, 71, died after complications from pneumonia, his daughter, Raquel Fonseca, told the Spanish news agency EFE. Both Mr. Fonseca and Jürgen Mossack, who together founded the Mossack Fonseca firm, stood trial in Panama last month in relation to an explosive investigation published in 2016 by a coalition of news outlets that looked at 11.5 million confidential documents from the firm. During the trial, which began April 8 and lasted 10 days, prosecutors alleged that the firm had created shell companies with the purpose of hiding money that came from illicit activities. A total of 29 people — former employees of the now-shuttered firm and alleged conspirators — were accused of money laundering.

CNN —As US supply chains decouple from China, Mexico’s manufacturing sector is emerging as a winner. Ramos said Mexico and China have been competing for the US manufacturing market for years, but amid a shifting US-China relationship, Mexico looks poised to pull ahead. Those exports were driven by manufacturing, which comprises 40% of Mexico’s economy, according to Morgan Stanley. Meanwhile, Chinese exports to the US were down 20% in 2023, compared to 2022. Analysts at Morgan Stanley see the value of Mexico’s exports to the United States growing from $455 billion to about $609 billion in the next five years.

CNN —Pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, may be linked to an elevated risk of death even decades after giving birth, according to a new study. The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that women who experienced major complications during pregnancy had an increased risk of early death and that risk remained elevated for more than 40 years. The data showed that more than 88,000 women had died and all five pregnancy complications were independently associated with a higher mortality risk later in life. Gestational diabetes was associated with a 52% increased risk of mortality, preterm delivery was associated with a 41% increased risk, delivering a baby with low birth weight was associated with a 30% increased risk, preeclampsia with a 13% increased risk and other hypertensive disorders with a 27% increased risk, the data showed. “We found that the increased mortality was attributable to multiple different causes of death, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disorders, and cancer,” he said.

CNN —A rift between Mexico and Ecuador is growing, with a series of diplomatic provocations this week that culminated in Ecuador rejecting Mexico’s ambassador to the country, and Mexico announcing that it would offer asylum to a wanted Ecuadorean politician. Mexican Ambassador Raquel Serur Smeke was declared “persona non grata” in Ecuador on Thursday after Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador appeared to criticize Ecuador’s recent elections. Ecuador’s 2023 run-off vote took place in a “very strange” manner, Lopez Obrador said, suggesting that presidential candidates used the media, candidate Fernando Villavicencio’s assassination, and overall violence in their favor while campaigning. In a statement posted on X, Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry called Lopez Obrador’s comments “unfortunate” and said the country is still mourning Villavicencio’s assassination. It also reiterated its focus on ensuring “respect for the dignity and sovereignty of the Ecuadorian State” and “non-intervention in the internal affairs of other States.”President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is speaking at the morning conference in front of reporters at the National Palace in Mexico City, Mexico, on April 3, 2024.

It was an evening in late January, and Raquel Cecilia Mendieta was dining at the Parador, the 12th-century monastery-turned-hotel where she was staying while she installed artwork for a new survey of Ana Mendieta, the famous Cuban-born performance artist — and Ms. Mendieta’s maternal aunt — at a nearby museum. It had been a long day of assembling logs, soil, pine cones and branches into a reimagining of the artist’s “Untitled: Silueta Series” inside the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, and her dinner companions — her 15-year-old daughter, Anabella, and Grace Hong, the assistant director at Galerie Lelong, which represents the Ana Mendieta estate — were still jet-lagged after traveling from New York. But they jumped when, after plates of bacalao and glasses of white wine had been cleared, Ms. Mendieta checked her phone and exclaimed, “Oh my god!”

Mention Belmopan, Belize’s capital that sits deep in the country’s interior, and many Belizeans will belittle the city as a bastion of pencil-pushing bureaucrats that’s not just dull, but also devoid of nightlife. “I was warned, ‘Belmopan is for the newlyweds or the nearly deads,’” said Raquel Rodriguez, 45, owner of an art school, about the reactions when she moved to Belmopan from coastal, bustling Belize City. Not exactly known as an Eden for young urbanites, Belmopan figures among the smallest capital cities anywhere in the Americas. The capital of Central America’s only English-speaking nation can feel jarringly different from the frenetic capitals of neighboring countries. In terms of its origins and design, Belmopan has more in common with the capitals of other former British colonies, especially in Africa.
