OpenAI's venture capital investors weren't thinking about its mission to serve "humanity" by developing artificial intelligence. After Altman's ouster, Vinod Khosla, an early investor in OpenAI, came to his defense despite the criticism. OpenAI's complex and unique corporate governance structure meant that VCs could invest in the capped profit entity, but never earn any influence over the nonprofit board of directors, all of whom were either cofounders or appointed outside AI experts. The board structure and its governance are all likely to change as part of the deal to bring Sam Altman back as CEO of OpenAI. The purpose of the newly formed OpenAI board – consisting of current board member D'Angelo, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor – is to vet and potentially appoint an expanded board of up to nine people, and that Microsoft and Altman want board seats, The Verge reported.

CNN —German tennis star Alexander Zverev has been given a penalty order and fined €450,000 ($478,000) by a Berlin court after being accused of physical abuse against a woman, according to a court statement. The court statement doesn’t name the woman, who is widely reported to be the mother of his child. In Germany, a judge can hand out a penalty order in cases where the public prosecutor’s office does not believe a trial is necessary. The alleged injured party has joined the proceedings as a complainant, according to the court statement. In October 2021, the ATP, the governing body for men’s professional tennis, said it was launching an investigation after domestic abuse allegations were made by another of Zverev’s former girlfriend, Olya Sharypova.

Sea ice levels in Antarctica are at an all-time low, the National Snow and Ice Data Center reports. Levels of sea ice in the region have reached record minimums this year, like in 2017 and 2022. Sea ice, the water that freezes on the surface of the sea in the Arctic and Antarctic hemispheres, has been decreasing in both regions. In Antarctica, sea ice levels reached record lows at least twice in 2023 after record minimums were detected in 2017 and 2022. Chart showing the levels of sea ice in Antarctica.

CNN —Zimbabwe’s recently re-elected President Emmerson Mnangagwa is facing outrage after appointing his son as deputy minister to the country’s finance ministry. Mnangagwa’s 34-year-old son, David, was among 26 officials sworn in as cabinet ministers Tuesday despite public anger when the list of the nominees was made public on Monday. In his expanded cabinet, Mnangagwa’s son is to deputize finance minister Mthuli Ncube while his nephew, Tongai, would serve as deputy minister in the country’s tourism ministry. Some Zimbabweans have accused Mnangagwa of running the impoverished southern African country as “a family business.”“Slowly Zimbabwe is becoming a family business. The opposition CCC party, which placed second in last month’s disputed polls, also criticized the ministerial list which included a couple, Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, both associates of President Mnangagwa, as ministers.

London CNN —The UK economy recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic much faster than previously thought, according to major revisions of official statistics that have erased Britain’s laggard status overnight. The ONS had said as recently as last month that UK GDP had still not reached its pre-pandemic size by the second quarter of this year. “UK growth has still been very sluggish, even if it’s not at the bottom,” said Prof. Huw Dixon, who leads research in economic measurement at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. So while the size of the economy is bigger than we thought, Britain still has a growth problem.”Richer dataIn 2020, the UK economy suffered its biggest slump in more than three centuries, recovering sharply the following year off a low base. The Osprey is an especially complex aircraft with a troubled history. With two rotor blades above extended wings, it takes off like a helicopter and can fly like a fixed-wing aircraft — which means that pilots need expertise in both. Last year, nine Marines were killed in two separate crashes. One Osprey aircraft crashed in June during a training mission near Glamis, Calif., killing five. Another crashed in a valley in Beiarn, Norway, killing all four on board.

“The history of Harlem churches is bound up with the history of cities and the changes that happen within the cities,” said Prof. Wallace Best, who teaches African American studies and religion at Princeton University and is writing a book on Black churches in Harlem. But the church will be unable to financially sustain itself and uphold its legacy of tending to the spiritual, political, and social needs of its community, without a dramatic uptick in its membership and donation flow. On any given Sunday, a few dozen or so churchgoers, primarily a mixture of older congregants and curious tourists, fill the pews. The First Sunday After Second-class TreatmentThe very first Sunday service of the church was held in 1796 in a cabinetmaker’s shop in Lower Manhattan on Cross Street, flanked by Orange and Mulberry Streets. A group of former slaves, dissatisfied with their second-class treatment in the predominantly white John Street Methodist Church, left to start Zion church under the leadership of its first bishop, James Varick.

A softer Japanese approach could dull EU efforts to establish its rules as a global benchmark, with requirements such as companies disclosing copyrighted material used to train AI systems that generate content like text and graphics. EU industry chief Thierry Breton is visiting Tokyo this week to promote the bloc's approach to AI rule-making as well as to deepen cooperation in semiconductors. The government official did not elaborate on areas where Japan's rules were likely to differ from those of the EU. For Japan, AI could help cope with the population decline that is causing a labour shortage. "If you increased the GPUs in Japan by 10 times, it would probably still be less than what OpenAI has available," said Prof. Matsuo.

AIs trained solely on other AIs will eventually spiral into gibberish, machine learning experts say. As more and more AI-generated content is published online, future AIs trained on this material will ultimately spiral into gibberish, machine learning experts have predicted. A group of British and Canadian scientists released a paper in May seeking to understand what happens after several generations of AIs are trained off each other. It has been the contention of the critic Fredric Jameson that the traditional realist novel is a largely exhausted form and that, today, it is science fiction that sends out “more reliable information about the contemporary world.” I suspect that Prof. Jameson might look to support his claim with “The Light at the End of the World,” an extravagant, time-traveling novel by Siddhartha Deb that depicts India’s past and future through a constellation of occult secrets and malign conspiracies. This wild, often bewildering production unites two seemingly contradictory agendas. It engages in what the author calls a “gradual dissolving of the boundary between the fantastic and the real,” seaming its narrative with nightmares, hallucinations and monstrous psychological projections. But it is through the recurrence of the uncanny that Mr. Deb creates a coherent, interconnected vision of India’s history—and, if trends persist, of its history to come.

Our Heard on the Street columnists picked a portfolio by throwing darts at a newspaper’s stock pages to see how their stocks compare to professional fund managers. Photo: Josh LoockPlease don’t feed or throw objects at the fund managers. David Einhorn and Stanley Druckenmiller , both scheduled speakers at Tuesday’s Sohn Investment Conference, each have earned billions of dollars through investing. Heard on the Street’s columnists are paid peanuts by comparison, but that didn’t stop us from making monkeys out of the conference’s hedge-fund luminaries five years ago. Inspired by Prof. Burton Malkiel ’s book “A Random Walk Down Wall Street” in which he quipped that “a blindfolded monkey throwing darts at a newspaper’s financial pages could select a portfolio that would do just as well as one carefully selected by the experts,” our dart-picked stocks beat the Sohn Conference’s picks by a bruising 22 percentage points.

The remnants of ancient viruses that remain in human DNA can help people fight lung cancer. Scientists have found endogenous retroviruses can be awoken in cancer tissue and evoke an immune response. This could be the key to developing a cancer treatment vaccine and aiding survival rates. This discovery puts scientists closer to creating more effective treatments for lung cancer, he said. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the United States (when discounting skin cancer), with the organization estimating that 2023 will see roughly 238,340 new cases of lung cancer and 127,070 deaths from the disease.
