REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 27 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Monday handed 3M (MMM.N), Corteva Inc (CTVA.N) subsidiary E.I. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated a lower court's approval of the massive class action, which included virtually every resident of Ohio and put considerable legal pressure on the chemical manufacturers to settle the plaintiffs' claims. The appeals court instructed the lower court to dismiss Hardwick's lawsuit, which had aimed to force the companies to pay for studies analyzing the health impacts of PFAS. The lawsuit also sought to establish a fund to monitor Ohio residents for health impacts from PFAS exposure. The chemicals are often referred to as forever chemicals because they do not easily break down in nature or in the human body.

Grand Canyon issues warning about ‘love locks’
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —“Love is strong, but our bolt cutters are stronger,” reads a new Facebook post from Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Many people believe that the locks are good luck for a relationship, and that throwing away the key symbolizes an unbroken love. However, while the locks themselves are considered “littering” and “graffiti” in the park, it’s the keys that can cause even more serious problems. When the city of Paris removed the locks in 2015, the weight of the 700,000 metal objects was the equivalent of 20 elephants. Once they were all removed, the city put glass partitions up on the bridge to prevent anyone from adding new locks.

A dedicated polymath who shifts between styles, genres and media, Williams is his best, most creative self in the presence of water. He grew up in a housing project called Atlantis, right by the beach; today, he holds an annual music and art festival in Virginia Beach called Something in the Water. Paris 2024 Olympics - Training for test swimming event for Paris 2024 - River Seine, Paris, France - August 4, 2023 A tourist boat is pictured on the River Seine beside the Pont Alexandre III bridge REUTERS/Stephanie LecocqPARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Participants of this weekend's Open Water Swimming World Cup were barred from a Friday morning training session in Paris' river Seine as heavy rainfall caused water quality to dip below health standards, the French Swimming Federation (FFN) said. The women's 10 kilometre race on Saturday - a qualifying event for marathon swimming at the Paris 2024 Olympics - is still scheduled to go ahead, pending a new river water quality test on Friday evening. "The water quality tests are done regularly, and they are progressively improving," the spokesperson added. International federation World Aquatics did not immediately respond to a request for comment about further backup plans for the races if Seine water quality does not improve this weekend. The city has been working on clean-up efforts to make the Seine swimmable again, as it was during the 1900 Paris Olympics more than a century ago.

Customers said the claims were false because LensCrafters' manufacturing processes did not support its claims, and that an update would not be clinically significant. They claimed to pay more for their glasses than if LensCrafters had not overpromised and underdelivered. The settlement covers all U.S. customers of LensCrafters who since Sept. 5, 2013, bought prescription glasses after being fitted with Accufit. US consumers earning less than $100,000 fueled record profits last year for French luxury group LVMH. These "aspirational" customers are now pulling back on spending as pandemic cash reserves run dry. Important as these shoppers are, don't expect to see huge markdowns from Louis Vuitton and Dior. "The cost of all these initiatives was obviously quite high," Guiony said. Not every luxury brand can pull this strategy off, but it appears LVMH certainly can.

Paris CNN —Back in the 1980s, when I first began living in Paris, I once had to clamber onto the tiny exterior staircase that surrounds the Eiffel Tower and is used to paint or repair it. Still, at that time, nothing could have impelled me to risk a swim in that other iconic Parisian sight — the Seine River — not without a full biohazard suit. Today’s Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has made a similar promise, and local authorities have put 1.4 billion euros ($1.55 billion) behind it. Paris has indeed made strides in cleaning up its famous river — water samples from June showed “excellent results” in complying with European regulation, according to city hall. Earlier this month, Pharrell Williams was in the men’s atelier on the second floor of Louis Vuitton’s corporate office in Paris, sunglasses on, surveying his new perch. “This window is different.”The window by his desk looks out over the small plaza on the north side of the Pont Neuf, where in just a couple of weeks, his first show as Louis Vuitton men’s creative director would take place. A 50-foot statue of the artist Yayoi Kusama, a Vuitton collaborator, hovered just outside. The rapper Pusha T and the streetwear innovator Nigo were milling about. Indeed, if there’s one attribute shared by New York and Paris it’s rats. The mayor of Paris is forming a committee to look into the cohabitation of the city's citizens with its notorious population of rats. Thomas Samson/AFP/Getty ImagesNot surprisingly, there are some who believe ridding the city of rats with traps and rat poison is utterly inhumane. In contrast, Boulard with his anti-rat vengeance, sounds more like the mayor of New York than the mayor of Paris. Of course, Paris has a far longer history than New York with rats.

The school's water recently tested above the state's safety limit for PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often referred to as "forever chemicals." NB BY J.C.: A Walk Through the Times Literary Supplement, by James CampbellIf you are a subscriber to the Times Literary Supplement, or TLS, that august literary review out of London, you know that its good, gray issues roll in every week, more quickly than it is possible to keep up. Davis didn’t mention it, but one part of the TLS no one skips, in my experience, is the NB column, which runs inside the back cover. This correspondent has officially been outed as James Campbell, a biographer of James Baldwin and a longtime editor at the magazine. He was a good steward of the column, and his best material has been collected now in “NB by J.C.: A Walk Through the Times Literary Supplement.”His NB was not a gossip column, Campbell explains. He hoped never to see the words “Martin” and “Amis” in proximity, and he mostly lived up to that vow.
The French château with more than 100 fighter jets

The majority of them were acquired as scrap,” says Christophe Pont, Michel’s son and current owner and manager of the château. Courtesy Miquel RosIn the mid-1980s, Pont, who was ex-military, made inquiries with the French Air Force about the possibility of getting one of their decommissioned Mirage III fighter jets to exhibit at the château. April 27 (Reuters) - The 2024 Olympic triathlon courses will start and finish on the Pont Alexandre III bridge in the centre of Paris, Games organisers announced as they unveiled the routes on Thursday. Organisers said the Para triathlon events will use the same course with some exceptions a month later. "Particular care has been taken to create the triathlon and Para triathlon courses, which will be equally spectacular, in the heart of the city and next to some of the most beautiful Parisian monuments," said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet in a statement. "The Paris 2024 edition of the triathlon and Para triathlon will ultimately contribute to leaving a legacy for the region and the people of Paris." The individual triathlon events will occur July 30-31 at 8am local time, while the mixed relay event will be held on Aug. 5.

So why make a mammoth meatball that doesn't taste like mammoth?
The conservative blowback came as no surprise to Parker, who told Nike's board of directors to expect some short-term backlash. "He would be at the side of the track calling out runners' splits but wouldn't call Kara's out," Adam Goucher told me. When people asked why she left the Oregon Project, she said it was a "personal decision." "I don't think it has anything to do with who the CEO is," Goucher told me.
