"He would know people's weaknesses and what they wanted and somehow always have something to offer," a former close friend said. Another close friend said Mickum once gave her a $1,000 loan "within minutes" when she needed it because of a credit-card crisis. He never "let the truth get in the way of a good story," a former close friend said. Hermès bags, like the Birkin and the Kelly, have always been symbols of unattainable luxury. There wasn't even a dust bag; Mickum claimed his mom's assistant would drop it off later.

The Art of Translation

The |of Translation The undefined|of Translation The undefined|of Translation The undefined|of Translation See how a translator carries a book from one language to another, line by line. Much like a crossword, a translation isn’t finished until all the answers are present and correct, with each conditioning the others. Below are two attempts to show the thought processes involved in the kind of translation I do. Nobody would say “the truth, the truth, the truth” in English. Without it, the translation is faithful to the meaning of the Spanish clause, but it feels stale, spiritless, not faithful to the voice.

Just to prove I’m a good mother, too, I let Jordan wear a pink mask to school because pink is his favorite color. I prayed that other children hadn’t learned how to be cruel yet. When I got to my car, the soldier mother was still sitting there, car running, babe in arms. The forecast had called for intermittent downpours, but I was in such a rush, I forgot Jordan’s raincoat. Please God, I prayed, don’t let me have an accident with my sweet grandchild in the car.

"Plaintiff took a break from his work, walked up to Defendant Giuliani, patted or tapped him on the back, said 'what's up scumbag,' and walked away." Giuliani told police officers who arrived at the store that he wanted Gill to be arrested. He told police officers that Gill "hit" him and that he was in pain, according to the lawsuit. A security camera video shows that Gill patted Giuliani on the back. This is the second lawsuit filed against Giuliani this week.
WASHINGTON—The global economy has emerged from the pandemic and weathered the war in Ukraine with surprising resilience, policy makers gathered in Washington said last week. Yet the recovery remains fragile as stubborn inflation fuels risks in many corners of the world. Top finance officials and central bankers patted each other on the back over the way their economies pulled through the past year, as they met for the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, their first fully in-person gathering in more than three years.
I recently sat next to a married couple in a restaurant. For most of the meal, the wife kept up a steady chatter: about their kids, their elderly parents, and the family’s upcoming vacation. Her husband nodded, smiled and even patted her arm. But he hardly said a word.

A college student spent about $1,800 from his student loan to fund his "paypig" fetish. I had just received my student-maintenance loan — a loan to help with my living expenses — and that gave me a bit of spare cash. After a few weeks, I booked a Skype session with a dom who asked me how much I had, and that's how I got into spending my student loan. It's quite addictive, and I've definitely spent money when I shouldn't have. In total I've spent almost £1,500, or about $1,800, from my student loan to fund my fetish, and I don't regret it.
For his 60th birthday, billionaire Robert F. Smith's wife threw him a James Bond-themed party. Partygoers weren't pleased with the "massive security" and port-a-potties outside, according to the New York Post. "They frisked you when you came out of the bathroom," one guest told New York Post, suggesting it was in an effort to search for hidden cameras and other surveillance technology. Despite the home boasting 15 bathrooms, guests say they were asked to use port-a-potties placed outside during the five-hour long party. It wasn't a great party," the guest told the New York Post.
Such behaviour undermines arguments that abandoning Xi’s zero-Covid policy will instantly stimulate economic activity. Even before factoring in Beijing’s response to the unrest, the International Monetary Fund expects a measly 3.2% GDP growth for China this year. Covid-19 cases began spiking in China in early November following a week-long public holiday. The government reported 40,347 new infections for Nov. 27 in an update issued Nov. 28. Beijing announced 20 relaxations of the country’s pandemic policy on Nov. 11, including shorter quarantine periods and more narrowly targeted lockdowns.
HONG KONG, Nov 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Officials’ muddled response to spiking Covid cases has set off three consecutive days of demonstrations spanning cities and social classes. What happened to former Chinese leader Hu Jintao?

China's former leader Hu Jintao is lifted from his chair by a young aide at the closing of the Communist Party Congress on Saturday. Neither has the incident been reported in Chinese language media, or discussed on Chinese social media, where conversations around senior leaders are highly restricted. Former Chinese leader Hu Jintao is taken by the arm and escorted out. “For whatever reasons, Xi ordered Hu to be escorted out when he must have thought that Hu might not behave exactly as Xi would have wanted,” he said. Former Chinese leader Hu Jintao pats the shoulder of his protege, Premier Li Keqiang.
During the once-in-five-years congress, Xi solidified his grip on power by appointing a Standing Committee made up entirely of loyalists - and excluding the three most senior members of Hu's once-powerful Communist Youth League faction. State TV's Saturday night news broadcasts included images of Hu at the congress, before his exit. Chinese politics, always opaque, have become even more secretive under Xi's decade-long tenure. "Despite the plausibility of a mundane explanation of ill-health, the CCP's secretiveness vis-à-vis senior Chinese leaders and elite Chinese politics lends itself to many more salacious explanations," he said. On China's Twitter-like Weibo, a few social media users alluded to the incident by commenting on old posts featuring Hu.
BEIJING, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Former Chinese President Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping's immediate predecessor, was unexpectedly escorted out of the closing ceremony of a congress of the ruling Communist Party on Saturday. According to videos taken by some journalists at the venue and shared on social media, Hu appeared confused as the stewards escorted him out. Hu had appeared slightly unsteady last Sunday when he was assisted onto the same stage for the opening ceremony of the congress. In July, I added "sex work" to my LinkedIn work experience. But at least in sex work, there's an audience and a desire for every type of body, gender, and play. Sex work may have the word "sex" in it, but most of the job — digital, in person, or otherwise — has little to do with sex. A lot of people seem to ignore the "work" part of sex work. Sex work of all kinds is work, and that's the last time I'll defend that statement.

Roti gambang, IndonesiaShutterstockPalm sugar and cinnamon lend a light, aromatic sweetness to roti gambang, a tender wheat bread that’s an old-fashioned favorite at Jakarta bakeries. This is where locals bring rounds of tender wheat dough ready to bake into khobz kesra, one of the country’s homiest breads. Gyeran-ppang, South KoreaShutterstockThere’s buried treasure within every loaf of gyeran-ppang, individually sized wheat breads with a whole egg baked inside. To make malawach, bakers roll wheat dough into a delicate sheet and fold it over a slick of melted butter.
