An ADSEP with blue PIL-BOXs, hardware which will be delivered to Sierra Space for the LIFE habitat pathfinder mission. Space infrastructure company Redwire is putting a biotech technology test bed on Sierra Space's first mission with its inflatable space habitat, establishing a new partnership between the two companies to make drugs in orbit. "It's an incredible moment for Redwire, an incredible moment for Sierra," Mike Gold, Redwire's chief growth officer, told CNBC. Redwire is not alone in targeting that market, with startups like Varda and Space Forge also working on such test beds. The idea is to manufacture drugs in space, leveraging the environment to create unique materials, that would be returned for use on Earth.

Mars is rotating more quickly, NASA mission finds
  + stars: | 2023-08-14 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Mars is rotating more quickly than it used to, according to data that NASA’s InSight lander collected on the red planet. Initially, the InSight mission, the first to study the interior of Mars, was supposed to last about two years after it landed in November 2018. The InSight mission continued to collect data about Mars until the very end, falling silent in December 2022 after dust blocked its solar panels from receiving sunlight. Researchers then used RISE to measure the wobble of Mars as the core sloshes around inside it. This new figure was compared with previous estimates of the core’s radius that were collected by tracking seismic waves as they traveled through Mars’ interior.

Blue Origin will develop its lunar lander alongside partners Lockheed Martin, Draper, Boeing, Astrobotic and Honeybee Robotics. Altogether, the price tag for Blue Origin’s lunar lander development program is likely worth more than $7 billion. Blue Origin has been fighting for a role in the Artemis lunar lander contracts — called Human Landing System — for years. A judge ultimately ruled against Blue Origin, though NASA later pledged to expand the number of companies with lunar lander contracts to two. NASA said from the beginning that it hoped to have more than one company working to develop lunar landers capable of carrying humans.
A new generation of airships is taking to the skies

It’s an airship, and French aeronautics company Flying Whales hopes its hybrid-electric, helium-lift vessel will change the shape of sustainable transport. Flying Whales' airships, pictured here in a render, could access remote locations without roads, railways or airports. That’s why most companies, including Flying Whales and LTA Research, are using helium, which is non-flammable. Prentice is also the founder and president of BASI, a Manitoba-based company specializing in airships adapted for cold climates. Flying Whales expects to test its first airship at the end of 2025, with commercial operations beginning in 2027 once the airship is certified.

CNN —Nissan is recalling more than 400,000 older SUV, van and pickup models in the United States because the Nissan badge on the steering wheel can break apart or detach when the airbag inflates. Vehicle airbags inflate with explosive force in a crash, and, in some of these vehicles, the round Nissan logo or pieces from it can become dangerous projectiles. The issue is thought to exist on just 0.3% of the recalled vehicles. The logo emblem, which is on the front of the steering wheel horn button, is part of an airbag assembly produced by Nissan supplier Autoliv, which used badges from a second supplier that was not fully identified. People with models that may be involved are being asked to visit NHTSA.gov to see if their vehicle is among those being recalled.
Nissan and Hitachi look to charge elevators with EV batteries

[1/2] 2023 Nissan Pathfinder is unveiled at the 2022 New York International Auto Show, in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., April 13, 2022. In what appears to be an early attempt in earthquake-prone Japan to make wider use of EV batteries, Nissan and Hitachi Building Systems Co Ltd are focused on keeping elevators running when the power supply is disrupted. The V2X system uses the CHAdeMO charging standard supported by Nissan, an Hitachi Building Systems executive said. That allows it to also draw power from larger Nissan EVs, such as the Ariya and Leaf models. Tatsunori Takahashi, a director in the domestic business management division of Hitachi Building Systems, said he hopes the firm will start providing the system to apartment buildings from the financial year starting in April.

Space agencies are working to put satellite navigation, or satnav, on rockets traveling the 239,000 miles between Earth and the moon. That means that most of the satellites' signal is blocked and only a little spills over. They were 116,300 miles away — about halfway to the moon, Ventura-Traveset said. So the plan is to give the moon its very own fleet of communication and navigation satellites, called the Moonlight initiative. Moon settlers will need high-speed internetSatellites could help future moon astronauts navigate on the moon, as can be seen in this artist's impression.

Former CEO Jeff Bezos, who stepped down in late 2021, led with a slogan of step ferociously. After he predicted that ecommerce was about to take off, Bezos founded Amazon as an online book retailer in 1994. According to the man himself, the value that "surprises people" is Amazon's fourth leadership principle: "are right, a lot." "No PowerPoints are used inside of Amazon," Bezos has said. Bezos ran elements of Amazon like a startup, such as being notoriously frugal when it came to company expenses.

The mystery of the Viking landing site has long puzzled scientists, who believe an ocean once existed there. Now, new research suggests that the lander touched down where a Martian megatsunami deposited materials 3.4 billion years ago, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports. The interest in the potential for life on the red planet prompted scientists to select its northern equatorial region, Chryse Planitia, as the first Martian landing site for Viking I. “The landing site selection needed to fulfill a critical requirement — the presence of extensive evidence of former surface water. Next, the team wants to investigate Pohl crater as a potential landing site for a future rover, since the location might contain evidence of ancient life.

The case is being pursued by the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force, which was launched in June 2021.
The Japanese company will transfer its shares in Nissan Manufacturing Russia LLC to state-owned NAMI, it said. The deal will give Nissan the right to buy back the business within six years, Russia's industry and trade ministry said. The sale to NAMI will include Nissan's production and research facilities in St Petersburg as well as its sales and marketing center in Moscow, the ministry said. Nissan said it expected an extraordinary loss of around 100 billion yen ($687 million), but maintained its earnings forecast for the financial year ending in March. The Nissan deal was "of great significance for the industry," Russia's Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said in a statement.
