Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota speaks during Question Period on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada September 25, 2023. Rota publicly recognised Hunka, calling him a hero. Russia called the incident outrageous. "That public recognition has caused pain to individuals and communities, including the Jewish community in Canada and around the world ... Foreign Minister Melanie Joly earlier said Rota should resign while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on him to ponder his future.

Canada's parliament accidentally honored a 98-year-old former World War II Nazi soldier. Yaroslav Hunka was introduced as a "Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero" but it was later revealed that he fought for the Waffen-SS. A Polish minister now says he's "taken steps" to extradite the elderly man. AdvertisementAdvertisementA Polish minister said Tuesday that he has "taken steps" to start the extradition of a 98-year-old Nazi who was accidentally honored in Canada's parliament over the weekend. Yaroslav Hunka, 98, received two standing ovations from Canadian lawmakers during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the episode showed a careless disregard for historical truth, and that the memory of Nazi crimes must be preserved. "Many Western countries, including Canada, have raised a young generation that does not know who fought whom or what happened during the Second World War. Canadian parliament speaker Anthony Rota introduced Hunka as "a Ukrainian Canadian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians" and "a Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero." During World War Two, when Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, some Ukrainian nationalists joined Nazi units because they saw the Germans as liberators from Soviet oppression.

By Pete SchroederWASHINGTON (Reuters) - The speaker of Canada's House of Commons on Sunday apologized for praising an individual at a parliamentary meeting who served in a Nazi unit during World War II. Two days earlier, Speaker Anthony Rota had recognized 98-year old Yaroslav Hunka as a "Ukranian hero" before the Canadian Parliament. Rota in a statement took responsibility for what was characterized as an oversight, calling the initiative "entirely my own." The recognition came following a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who thanked Canada for its assistance in his country's war against Russia. Since their forces entered Ukraine, Russian officials have drawn parallels with the struggle against Nazism during World War II.

While Biden and most congressional leaders still support aid to Ukraine, and Biden's Democrats control the Senate, Zelenskiy faces a tougher crowd than when he visited Washington nine months ago. Zelenskiy told Senators that military aid was crucial to Ukraine's war effort, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in the Senate chamber after the briefing, which took place behind closed doors. "If we don't get the aid, we will lose the war," Schumer quoted Zelenskiy as saying. Biden will announce a new $325 million military aid package for Ukraine, which is expected to include the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155 millimeter Howitzer cannon. About a third of the House Republican caucus voted in July for a failed proposal to cut funding for Ukraine.

At “Ready … set … exercise!” Taylor started pacing his fellow runners around the track, the trickiest stretch being a right angle that funnels into a gap between chain link fences. When Taylor started running, “everything connected mentally and spiritually,” he said. Taylor’s return to San Quentin is part of an extraordinary year in his life. He’s one of the subjects of “26.2 to Life: Inside The San Quentin Prison Marathon,” a documentary film by Christine Yoo. “Him getting out shows that just because you’re a lifer doesn’t mean you’re going to be in here forever.”

“That was my dream come true,” Lea Michele gushed from the stage on Sunday after her final performance in “Funny Girl,” the Broadway revival that the actress breathed new life into when its future looked grim one year ago. Michele’s sudden addition to the production, which closed with its star’s exit, stretched its run to nearly 600 performances and allowed it to recoup its capitalization costs — far from a guarantee on Broadway. “I was embraced with open arms the minute I came in.”Just as Michele reversed the show’s fortunes, “Funny Girl” appeared to have reversed hers. Three years ago, Michele’s celebrity had been clouded by a wave of criticism over bullying behavior and a prima donna attitude. Since she stepped in as the show’s lead, Michele has reassumed the role of a celebrated Broadway star, announcing Tony nominees, performing on late-night shows and booking a solo concert this fall at Carnegie Hall.

August 6 - The Philadelphia Phillies would like to see this version of $300 million shortstop Trea Turner -- and their suddenly Turner-supporting fans --- on Sunday and for the rest of the season. After a grassroots support campaign for Turner -- roughly organized by Philadelphia radio station WIP -- Phillies fans greeted Turner with a standing ovation before his first at-bat in Friday's series opener. Turner added an RBI double in the eighth to provide an insurance run, drawing another ovation from fans who will see Turner in Philadelphia through 2033 under his 11-year contract. "Roller coaster is obviously the first thing that comes to mind," Turner said after Saturday's win. Turner is 1-for-6 in his career against the 39-year-old Greinke (1-11, 5.32 ERA), who opposes Philadelphia right-hander Taijuan Walker (12-4, 3.99) on Sunday.

Jerusalem CNN —On Thursday evening, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced a last-minute televised statement by Benjamin Netanyahu. But instead, despite the tens of thousands of protesters, the increase in refusals to serve by military reservists and even a very public and harsh criticism of the judicial overhaul plan by US President Joe Biden, Netanyahu refused to back down. He saved his harshest criticisms for two groups: the demonstrators on the streets and the military reservists who are refusing to serve in protest. “Citizens of Israel, all of the remarks about the destruction of democracy are simply absurd,” Netanyahu said. Should it pass, it will be the first aspect of the judicial overhaul to do so.

Backstage at the Kennedy Center, as business leaders in bespoke suits and fine silk saris filtered into a 1,200-seat theater, Mr. Modi met with a handful of entrepreneurs. Mr. Modi tapped Mr. Sachdev’s shoulder and exclaimed “waah,” or wow in Hindi. With an emphasis on national pride, Mr. Modi and his conservative Hindu-first Bharatiya Janata Party have cultivated a surprisingly strong relationship with India’s successful diaspora. The bond has been strengthened by a global political machine, supercharged under Mr. Modi with party offices in dozens of countries and thousands of volunteers. And it has allowed Mr. Modi to fuse his own image — and his rubric of elevating India — with superstar executives and powerful, often more liberal constituencies in the United States, Britain, Australia and many other nations.

With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the controversial House Republican from Georgia, blasted Steve Bannon and other far-right figures in a series of messages to Rep. "She took a job from me when she publicly accused me of being crazy," Loomer said to The Daily Beast. She told Gaetz her town hall got "standing ovations" and that "Steve, Loomer, and anyone else coming after me won't beat me." When reached for comment, Rep. Gaetz said, "I fully support Marjorie Taylor Greene's re-election and am eager to campaign alongside her.

The Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival began this week with Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, and ends on May 27 with a new Pixar film, “Elemental.” In between, there will be many screenings, many awkward standing ovations, many awards bestowed. Wes Anderson also has a new one, “Asteroid City,” about a junior stargazing convention. It features many members of the Andersonian repertory — Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody and others. In “Firebrand,” from the Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Alicia Vikander plays Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law. Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in 2018, has a new film, “Monster.” It stars Sakura Ando from “Shoplifters,” and the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who died last month, did the score.
Cannes 2023: The Films We’ve Excited About Seeing

Wes Anderson’s films have premiered at a wide variety of festivals, but after “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012), “The French Dispatch” (2021) and his upcoming ensemble comedy “Asteroid City,” Cannes is the fest he keeps coming back to. Last week, I asked Anderson what he finds so compelling about a debut on the Croisette. “The reason to go to Cannes, I think, is because they said yes,” he deadpanned. “After that, there isn’t really much to contemplate.”Well, there’s a little more to it than that, Anderson admitted: For cinema lovers, there is no holier pilgrimage to make than to the Cannes Film Festival, where movies are treated with the utmost reverence and routinely given marathon standing ovations. It is a place where great auteurs have been canonized, like Martin Scorsese, who won the Palme d’Or in 1976 for “Taxi Driver” and will return this year with his new feature “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Quentin Tarantino, a Palme winner (for “Pulp Fiction” in 1994) and Cannes habitué who’ll be back at the fest this year for a wide-ranging conversation that may touch on his upcoming final film.
Trump hasn't been waging the same kind of cultural warfare over education that DeSantis and other Republicans have since the coronavirus pandemic. DeSantis was in Iowa on Friday, speaking at a pair of political events that appeared to be laying groundwork for a presidential bid. His education agenda in Florida was a recurring theme in his remarks, and DeSantis credited it as a reason that he convincingly won re-election last year. DeSantis has asked the Florida legislature to expand a ban on teaching gender-identity concepts to eighth grade from third grade currently. Some of Trump’s education ideas include rewarding teachers who teach “patriotic values” and requiring direct election of school principals by parents, although how he would bring that about is unclear.
[1/4] Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at Gaylord National Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, U.S., March 4, 2023. The three-day conference illustrated the iron grip he holds over the right-wing, grassroots base of his party and how hard it could be for a challenger to deny Trump the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. DeSantis also attended a gathering for Republican donors in Florida held by the anti-tax group Club for Growth to which Trump was not invited. In his remarks, Bannon maintained that Trump should be the Republican nominee, saying DeSantis and other potential challengers lacked experience. Trump and DeSantis both are scheduled in the coming days to visit Iowa, which holds the first Republican nominating contest next year.
An influential conservative group, the Council for National Policy, held one of its summits this weekend. The Council for National Policy held a summit this weekend at Trump National Doral, a golf club owned by former President Trump that's just on the outskirts of the City of Miami. The Council for National Policy has been meeting for roughly four decades under a shroud of silence in upscale locations three times a year. "President Trump was honored to have the Council for National Policy at the world-renowned Trump National Doral," he said. "Somebody gets you in, you sort of be loyal to that person," Trump said.

Brooke Shields attends the 2023 Sundance Film Festival "Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields" Premiere at Eccles Center Theatre on January 20, 2023 in Park City, Utah. Amy Sussman/Getty ImagesIt was impossible not to feel optimistic about the state of independent film at the opening weekend of the 39th Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Insider's Alison Brower writes. The party scene was as lively as ever, anchored by HBO Documentary Films' annual shindig at Ruth's Chris Steak House. Many experts worry that without some type of major intervention, the obstacles facing first-time homebuyers will continue to get worse for years to come.
But the visit also leaves several key questions unanswered, including how U.S. military support could evolve, whether Congressional support for the war will endure and - crucially - how the war will end. Biden announced that the United States would provide another $1.85 billion in military aid, including a Patriot missile defense system. The United States and its allies have been unwilling to provide other advanced weapons Ukraine has pleaded for. The next steps for Kyiv, the officials added, would be to receive additional air defense systems from the United States and other western countries along with better integrating them. "No more blank checks to Ukraine," Republican Representative Andy Biggs wrote on Twitter hours before Zelenskiy's visit to Washington.
Congress, currently controlled by Biden's Democrats, is expected to approve $44.9 billion more this week in a bill funding the federal government. Zelenskiy stressed as he began his speech that he was addressing both Democrats and Republicans. "No more blank checks to Ukraine," Republican Representative Andy Biggs wrote on Twitter hours before Zelenskiy's visit to Washington. Biggs, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, has emerged as the main challenger to House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy in the House speakership election, slated for Jan. 3. Gaetz said nothing had changed his opposition to Ukraine aid and, when asked if there was anything compelling in the speech, said, "I loved the fashion choices."
Zelenskyy's historic, risky 10-hour visit to Washington was months in the making. Pelosi held discussions on the trip with the top Ukrainian lawmaker as far back as October, AP reported. Along these lines, the White House did not announce Zelenskyy's visit until 1 am on Wednesday, though reports of the trip first emerged Tuesday. By coming to Washington, Zelenskyy was able to make a direct appeal to lawmakers and Americans for more help. December 22, 2022 — Update: This article was updated to state that Zelenskyy was accompanied by the US ambassador to Ukraine.
