REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationORLANDO, Florida, July 26 (Reuters) - Remember the U.S. twin deficits? The dollar did fall - around 40% between the dotcom bust and the global financial crisis - and the twin deficits were a factor. Indeed, when the twin deficits really exploded in 2008 as the government and Fed fought to prevent another Great Depression, the dollar actually rose 25%. "Twin deficits are inherently unsustainable – for Treasuries and the dollar - unless there is a shift towards a deflationary environment that stimulates demand for sovereign debt instruments," Costa said. Persistently wide twin deficits will test the appetite to use the dollar as the savings currency of choice for investors and countries around the world.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - Two U.S. House of Representatives committees said Friday they are investigating Ford Motor Co's (F.N) partnership with Chinese battery company CATL (300750.SZ). Ford announced in February it is spending $3.5 billion to build a battery plant in Michigan using technology from CATL, the world's largest battery maker. The committees said several hundred of the 2,500 Ford plant jobs will be filled by CATL employees from China who will be in charge of setting up and maintaining equipment. Ford still is awaiting guidance from the U.S. Treasury to ensure the partnership does not run afoul of the requirement. Republican Senator Marcio Rubio has urged the Biden administration to investigate the deal and introduced legislation that seeks to bar consumer tax credits for EVs produced using CATL technology.

The Mexico nearshoring play is real, but investors should be aware of some pitfalls. Nearshoring — also called reshoring, onshoring, inshoring or backshoring — is helping drive Mexican stocks higher this year. For U.S. companies, there are compelling advantages to moving operations to Mexico from Asia, including geographical proximity, as well as low labor costs. "There is no nearshoring industrial revolution without electricity," according to a March note where Lippmann discusses Mexico's need to revamp its electricity infrastructure. New York CNN Business —The Covid-19 pandemic exposed glaring weaknesses in America’s medical supply chains, causing a frantic scramble for masks, respirators and other gear needed to fight the virus. Now, a bipartisan effort in Congress is attempting to boost medical supply chain resilience and ease the country’s reliance on less friendly nations like China for critical medical supplies – before the next disaster strikes. The bill aims to improve supply chain resilience by giving the White House the ability to diversify and expand supply networks while simultaneously eliminating unneeded trade barriers. Earlier this month, the White House hailed the end of the supply chain nightmare that had sent consumer prices surging and left some store shelves empty. The administration released a scorecard that indicated dozens of recommendations from a 2021 supply chain review have been implemented, including some related to strained medical supply chains.

The Club's industrials are set to profit from a burgeoning trend of companies bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. from overseas. As companies reconstruct supply chains in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mizuho analysts see a multiyear revenue benefit for Western industrials. But companies that enable manufacturing automation, including Emerson, follow closely behind as "core beneficiaries" of the reindustrialization cycle, according to Mizuho. Meanwhile, Mizuho pointed to Honeywell as one of the companies offering a more diversified way for investors to gain reshoring exposure. Northvolt, which counts BMW (BMWG.DE) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) among its investors, last year delivered its first battery cells from its gigafactory in Skelleftea in Sweden. In its largest deal in Europe yet, IMCO has invested $400 million in Northvolt through convertible notes, it told Reuters. "Whether it (Northvolt) goes public or stays private, we've done our homework and we are happy with the investment." Matthew Mendes, IMCO's head of infrastructure, said the Northvolt investment was examined jointly by his team and IMCO's public equities managers. IMCO has an investment team of 110 staff, which it plans to grow as it looks for more investments overseas.

Steve Eisman is looking beyond the hype around tech, and is betting big on US infrastructure. He cited one utility stock that's jumped 34% year to date, due to infrastructure needs. Citing a utility stock called Quanta Services, he said "the opportunities for the company have been enormous, so the stock has been revalued." Eisman has bet on the grid since at least February, when he said that tech stocks might struggle in the face of climbing interest rates. Though he said on the podcast that tech stocks are investible for a long time, he said it's unclear how they may move in the future.

Morgan Stanley has identified several stocks to invest in as electric vehicle battery manufacturing shifts to the West. EV giant Tesla , auto parts maker Aptiv , and battery maker Freyr rank highly, according to Morgan Stanley, while Ford and Chinese batter maker CATL rank lower. Tesla Tesla is well placed to overcome the three challenges, Morgan Stanley said. Ford / CATL Morgan Stanley noted that companies like Ford and Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, might face challenges when it comes to "onshoring" due to geopolitical concerns and potential technological barriers. Ford will own the new facility but will license battery manufacturing technology from CATL, including technical expertise.
Nvidia has undoubtedly been one of the sector's biggest winners this year, but Bank of America is doubling down on a lesser-known chip stock. That's significantly higher than the average potential upside of 16.1% given by analysts covering the stock, according to FactSet data. Bank of America described the firm as a "top pick" among European auto semiconductors and said the stock remains cheaper than its peers. The bank said it believes concerns about the company's poor track record and high Apple concentration are "likely to fade over the course of the next 12-18 months" as it improves gross margins and operating margins. Apple's share of the firm's revenue is also likely to drop to around 10% by end-2024, the bank added.
China takes swipe at Western 'friend-shoring' efforts

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - China's central bank governor on Friday took a swipe at efforts by Western economies to trade more with allies and rely less on the world's largest goods-exporting country, saying such "friend-shoring" attempts could prevent global supply chain tension from easing. Reducing their deep dependence on supply chains with China at their center has become a top priority among Western economies as Beijing's threats to Taiwan heighten geopolitical risks in Asia. "Despite an overall easing of supply chain tensions, they continue to be challenged by protectionist measures such as onshoring, nearshoring, and friend-shoring," Yi said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has recently encouraged "friend-shoring," or the diversification of supply chains away from China to market-oriented democracies such as India. The fragmentation of global trade has drawn warnings from international institutions including the IMF.

The Inflation Reduction Act's tax credits will likely prompt surging demand for solar power in the U.S., according to Goldman Sachs. The law included a 30% credit toward the installation of solar panels or other equipment that harnesses renewable energy. Because of this, he recommends solar stocks that broadly play to supply chain diversification and onshoring trends while also having strong business fundamentals. First Solar , meanwhile, should specifically benefit from the push to expand domestic renewable energy capacity, Singer said. While the stock has surged more than 40% since 2023 began, analysts expect shares to slip 1.3% over the next year.
[1/3] Morris Chang, the founder of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), speaks on stage during a Chip War book event in Taipei, Taiwan March 16, 2023. In Taiwan, TSMC, Asia's most valuable listed company and a major Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier, is widely regarded as the "sacred mountain protecting the country," because of its economic importance. U.S. "onshoring" and "friendshoring" efforts to boost chip manufacturing stateside or in allied countries present a predicament for Taiwan. TSMC is expanding its global production footprint, even as it keeps its most advanced technology in Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Chinese government is plowing billions into bolstering its chip sector, but Chang said China's chip manufacturing technology lags that of Taiwan by "at least five or six years".
Utility-scale solar installations fell by about a third year-over year to 11.8 gigawatts, the lowest since before the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. The residential segment, meanwhile, rose by 40%, with a record 700,000 homeowners installing rooftop solar in 2022, the report said. The report projects steady growth, averaging 19% a year, until 2027. The greater availability of solar panels is expected to boost installations this year, after projects were slowed by U.S. restrictions on solar panels from China's Xinjiang over concerns about forced labor. Reuters reported this week that U.S. imports of Chinese solar panels are picking up after months of gridlock stemming from the forced labor protection law.
It's time to take some profits from what was one of the best-performing energy stocks last year, according to investor Stephanie Link. The chief investment strategist and portfolio manager at Hightower said she sold shares of Occidental Petroleum , which outperformed last year on the back of rising oil prices. Occidental shares posted a return of 119% in 2022. Schlumberger shares are more than 1% higher in 2023. Another name the investor sold was D.R.
And it's little surprise the International Monetary Fund forecast Britain would be the only economy of the G7 to contract this year. But certainly the potential for improved trade relations with the UK's biggest trading partner is clear. Unicredit this month cited estimates that the UK economy would underperform by 5-7% over 10 years if it remains outside the EU single market and customs union. It may even have been a key spur to this week's breakthrough given the frayed geopolitical backdrop. President Joe Biden has long insisted there would be no progress on a U.S. deal with Britain until the Northern Irish conundrum was resolved.
