CNN —Fragments of a skull believed to have been that of composer Ludwig van Beethoven have been donated to a university in Austria after spending decades in the United States. Seligmann, who died in 1892, had been a physician, medical historian and anthropologist in Vienna. The skull pieces, now referred to as the Seligmann fragments, came into his possession in 1863 during a reburial of Beethoven’s bones for study purposes. Rischgitz/Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesIn 1802, 25 years before his death, Beethoven wrote a letter to his brothers, asking that his doctor, Johann Adam Schmidt, determine and share the nature of his “illness” after his death. Christian Reiter, a Vienna-based forensic pathologist, has previously examined the skull fragments and deemed them to be credible.

Spider mites are tiny arachnids, distant cousins of spiders, smaller than the tip of a standard ballpoint pen. Living together in dense colonies can make for fierce competition in finding a mate, especially because female spider mites only use the sperm from the first male with which they mate. Males will guard females that are nearly mature, so that as soon as the females are set to mate, the males will be ready. While farmers and gardeners often revile spider mites as plant-eating pests, many biologists use them as model organisms. “I hope they are fascinated about what type of sophisticated behaviors have evolved, even in such tiny animals as spider mites,” he said.

[1/5] A demonstrator takes part in a protest against the shut down of the last three German nuclear power plants, in Berlin, Germany, April 15, 2023. An estimated 50,000 protesters in Germany formed a 45-kilometre long (27-mile) human chain after the Fukushima disaster from Stuttgart to the Neckarwestheim Nuclear Power Plant. One of the long-running movement's early successes came in the 1970s when it managed to get plans for a nuclear plant in Wyhl in western Germany overturned. It was a Greens-coalition government that introduced the country's first nuclear phase-out law in 2002. "The nuclear phase-out is a Greens project ... and all parties have practically adopted it," said Rainer Klute, head of pro-nuclear non-profit association Nuklearia.

That's bad news for current real-estate investors, and probably good news for prospective ones. On the other hand, it's potentially good news for prospective real-estate investors who have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for better deals. Below is a list of Insider stories to help navigate the current real-estate investing landscape as prices fall. They see US home prices falling another 6% in 2023, putting peak-to-trough declines at around 10%. Willpower is often associated with depriving yourself of a perceived vice. The more willpower you have the more easily you'll be able to complete, say, meatless Monday or dry January. Having more willpower doesn't only affect how much you're able to abstain from an activity, though. It also affects how much energy you have to give to certain activities, says Veronika Job, a motivational psychology professor at the University of Vienna who studies willpower. If your partner had an overwhelming day at work and forgot to pay a bill or do the dishes, how you respond reflects the amount of willpower you have, Job says.
Veronika Job is a motivational psychology professor at the University of Vienna who studies willpower. Her research indicates some surprising news: You possess the exact amount of willpower you believe you possess. Furthermore, views of one's own willpower start at a young age, she says, and there is no evidence you can easily change this perception down the line. In other words, there is no "silver bullet" to developing more willpower. There are tasks that you might simply have more determination to complete, which could help you "indirectly" change your attitude toward your own willpower.

All of the swells of Vienna are gathered for an intoxicating evening of fancy dress, fizzy wine and graceful waltzing. “As long as Vienna keeps dancing, the world can’t end,” reasons high-living notary Josef Bartok in “Chess Story.” Vienna stops dancing: It’s March 11, 1938. Later that night the Austrian premier will resign, turning the country over to the Third Reich as Bartok ( Oliver Masucci ) returns home. Adapted from the novella by Stefan Zweig , “Chess Story” is a diabolically knotted psychological thriller. The board game emerges as a fascist tool for crushing the psyche of one’s opponent, a portal to liberation, or possibly both.
