How Jaguar plans to save itself
  + stars: | 2024-12-04 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Glover said the first actual production model Jaguar is expected to launch in 2026 and will closely resemble the concept. Jaguar Land Rover hit an annual sales record in 2017. Though that was largely thanks to the success of Land Rover's three lines of muscular SUVs, Jaguar sales hit 178,601, a 20% increase over the previous year, at that point. Jaguar's struggles are not unique, said Karl Brauer, executive analyst for iSeeCars, a car shopping website and data provider. "Going volume definitely didn't help," said Charles Tennant, an independent auto analyst who is both the former chief engineer at Land Rover and a former director at Tata Motors, who advised the Indian carmaker on the Jaguar and Land Rover acquisition.

New York CNN —Jeff Bezos hopes Donald Trump has changed. “I don’t think the press is the enemy,” Bezos told Andrew Ross Sorkin. “The press is not the enemy, let’s go persuade him of this.”While Trump famously targeted Bezos and his companies during his first term, Bezos said he was “very optimistic” about a second Trump administration and suggested he even wants to help the incoming president. The Washington Post, which Bezos acquired in 2013 for $250 million, has struggled in the face of dwindling audience traffic and subscriptions. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai also briefly commented on the incoming Trump administration in a separate interview during Wednesday’s event.

Britain, France, China, Israel, India and Pakistan had already made their voices heard, then North Korea joined in, with Iran seemingly poised to follow, with all the chatter multiplying the opportunities for miscommunication. Now China, after years of contenting itself with a diminutive retaliatory arsenal, has changed its mind and is striving to rival the United States and Russia. Key arms-control treaties have expired or been abandoned, and there is little immediate hope for new ones. Having fallen from 70,000 warheads at the height of the Cold War to about 12,000 today, the global arsenal has begun again to grow, according to the Federation of American Scientists. Whether justified or not, these concerns are destabilizing.

Between stubbornly high mortgage rates and elevated prices, home buyers had a tough time navigating the housing market in 2024, but more changes could be coming next year, Zillow says. In a recent outlook, the real estate listings site forecast a handful of developments for next year's housing market, which they noted is still in the process of normalizing since the pandemic. Ukraine's navy has revealed a fresh paint job on some of its vessels, which appear to have adopted a World War I-era tactic of using dazzle camouflage. The Ukrainian navy shared the images on social media on Thursday, showing versions of the paintwork. The boats were pictured taking part in a demonstration for naval experts from Denmark, which is cooperating with Ukraine on various naval issues, Ukraine's navy said. Dazzle camouflage first emerged in World War I as a means to confuse enemy submarines and reduce their ability to effectively aim torpedoes. Ukraine's navy has no large ships on active duty and consists mainly of small vessels, like those seen in the recent images.

What’s happening in Syria? A simple guide

The offensive is the first time opposition forces have seized territory in Aleppo since 2016, shattering the stalemate of a war that never formally ended. Extremist Islamists including al Qaeda took an interest in Syria, taking up a common cause with the moderate Syrian opposition who did not welcome jihadist involvement. Analysts told CNN that the Syrian rebels are using a vacuum left by the group to advance in Syria. The new grouping is made up of a broad spectrum of opposition forces, from Islamist factions to moderates. The backbone of the SDF are Kurdish fighters from a group known as the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), which has previously fought other Syrian opposition groups.

News that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's plans to hike tariffs on imports from China, Canada and Mexico sent ripples across global markets Tuesday. Asian markets traded broadly lower , but Chinese stocks held up surprisingly well. Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at the U.S.-headquartered Bleakley Financial Group, said China is better prepared to cope with tariffs than in 2016. Referencing the impact of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in 2016, Boockvar said it was "negative, not a benefit" in aggregate. 'A lot of value' Beyond the U.S., Boockvar said Asian markets including China, Japan, Singapore and Vietnam were offering "a lot of value."

CNN visited the border town of Shtula on Wednesday just hours after the ceasefire took effect. The town is one of the most dangerous places in northern Israel, having faced the threat of Hezbollah’s anti-tank missiles for months. Jalaa Marey/AFP/Getty ImagesOra Hatan, who remained in her home in Shtula, said the morning of the ceasefire deal was “unusual” after months of relentless artillery fire. Hatan’s fears have not, however, subsided with the ceasefire deal. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said the Lebanon ceasefire deal needs to ensure the safety of residents in northern Israel.

"I would recommend that tariffs be layered in gradually," Bessent told CNBC earlier this month before his nomination. Small-cap stocks performed even better, probably because Bessent has expressed support for Trump's economic agenda, which would benefit smaller, domestically oriented companies.

Macy’s on Monday said an employee responsible for managing accounting for small package deliveries concealed up to $154 million in expenses over the course of nearly three years. Macy's said it discovered the issue while preparing its financial report for the three-month period ending Nov. 2. The company said the employee, who was responsible for the accounting of small package delivery expenses, "intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries" to hide about $132 million to $154 million from the fourth quarter of 2021 through the most recently completed quarter. The independent investigation hasn't identified any other Macy's employee, the company said. The move will leave 350 Macy’s locations, as well as Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury beauty and skin care stores, which the company said have been “outperformers” within the Macy’s portfolio.

Three years ago, Southwest Airlines started flying out of Bellingham, Wash., a growing city near the Canadian border, aiming to do what it had done in dozens of smaller airports — sell lots of tickets to people who have few other travel options. Officials and residents in Bellingham, which sits between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, were thrilled as the airline added new nonstop service to cities on the West Coast at affordable prices. “The community embraced them, and we loved having them,” said Rob Fix, the executive director of the Port of Bellingham, which oversees the airport. But the expansion didn’t work as planned. This year, facing unexpected costs and challenges, Southwest left Bellingham and a handful of other cities it had started serving during an ambitious period of growth early in the recovery from the pandemic — markets that it said were underperforming.

A Connecticut couple is accused of stealing around $1 million worth of items from Lululemon stores across the country, according to a complaint filed in Minnesota District Court. Jadion Richards, 44, and Akwele Lawes-Richards, 45, were arrested at a Lululemon store in Woodbury, Minnesota, and charged with organized retail theft on Nov. 14. According to the complaint, the couple had visited another Lululemon location in Roseville, Minnesota, the day before with an unidentified man, where they allegedly stole almost $5,000 worth of items. The investigator explained how the couple allegedly run their theft scheme, with Richards typically entering the store first and purchasing a couple of small items.
