The Canadian dollar and Australian dollar were in focus on Monday ahead of their central bank meetings this week, while the euro and other major currencies held steady as traders reviewed the U.S. dollar's prospects. On the former, a quarter point cut by the ECB is baked in. The Canadian dollar is trading near a 4-1/2-year low as markets anticipate another outsized interest rate cut. Markets give a higher probability for a larger 50 basis point cut, and are even priming for negative interest rates by next year. While the case for the rate cut seems sealed, investors have one eye on U.S. consumer price inflation (CPI) data due this week.

“If the housing market were going to crash, it would have already crashed by now,” said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin. “The housing market has been so resilient to interest rates going up as high as they have.”Here are five housing market predictions for 2025, according to Fairweather and other economists. If fewer homes are built in a supply-constrained market, prices might grow much higher, said Channel. More than 21 million renter households are “cost-burdened,” meaning they spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs, according to 2023 U.S. Census data. “Rent prices typically decline in the colder months of the year,” as fewer people are apartment hunting in the late fall and winter seasons.

Job seekers with prestigious schools or employers on their résumés can benefit from a "halo" effect. While they look good on paper, that's a problem for employers and many job seekers, executives told Business Insider. If fewer homes are built in a supply-constrained market, prices might grow much higher, said Channel. A stable rental market will also give renters more strength to negotiate with landlords. For instance: Austin, Texas was the "epicenter of multi-family construction," she said, meaning a lot of new supply was added into the city's rental market, bringing rental costs down. In contrast, supply-constrained metropolitan areas like Seattle, Washington, D.C., and New York City, are experiencing high rent growth of 5% annually. Mortgage rates declined this fall in anticipation of the first interest rate cut since March 2020.

At 4.1%, the unemployment rate remains historically low. (For context: The unemployment rate never dropped below 5% in the 1970s or the 1980s.) Expectations were for the unemployment rate to have climbed from 4.1% to 4.2%, with 214,000 jobs added. “With the current jobs market cooling down quite a bit from the Great Resignation, and with inflation, people don’t feel secure making the leap” to new roles, Wigert said. Bitcoin's rally to new heights signals even more momentum for a stock market that's also at all-time highs, according to Fundstrat's Tom Lee. "I don't think $100,000 is the ceiling." He told CNBC he was confident that the digital currency would top $100,000 before year-end. Last month, he called for a year-end stock market rally fueled by investor de-risking and "animal spirits" driving postelection gains, largely on hopes of greater deregulation. He's also said that small-cap stocks could get a boost from Federal Reserve interest rate cuts and Trump's business-friendly stances.

Property prices keep rising as Dubai scrambles to build thousands more villas to meet demand. The influx of wealthy folk is causing a problem, however: there aren't enough houses to meet demand. To meet surging demand, Dubai is scrambling to build more homes. Developers will have to build even more upmarket properties to meet demand. Prices are expected to rise by 8% in 2025, yet luxury property in Dubai is still a relative bargain.

The data comes from GoodRx's new Weight Loss Medications Tracker, which examines fill trends and spending patterns in the U.S. for popular weight loss medications. But Marsh said out-of-pocket costs can add up, even if a patient has insurance coverage for a weight loss treatment. GoodRx said people without insurance can save an average of $250 monthly, or $3,000 annually, using its coupons for weight loss drugs. The federal Medicare plan also doesn't cover weight loss treatments unless they are approved and prescribed for another health condition. But the Biden administration in November proposed a rule that would allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight loss drugs for patients with obesity.

Oscar Andrade says every day is an opportunity to rescue migrants in the Arizona desert, where temperatures exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit this year. For Andrade, the number of sets of migrant remains is a cause for worry. According to the researchers’ data, the largest discrepancies in numbers occurred in 2021 and 2020, when Pima County recorded 225 and 206 migrant deaths, respectively, compared with Border Patrol data, which totaled 78 and 43. Border Patrol changes and their impactMartinez and his team of researchers noted that the discrepancies in the numbers of migrant deaths between coroners' offices and Border Patrol began to increase in 2013 and have not stopped growing. Under a border security initiative that ended in 2012, Border Patrol was responsible for trying to find as many deaths as possible in border counties.

Meanwhile, players assigned male at birth and who have gone through male puberty are not eligible. “Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan in a press release.
