PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — With the death last spring of Portland's beloved Valentine's Day bandit, some wondered if the mysterious appearance of red hearts around Maine's largest city would continue. Hundreds of red hearts appeared on storefronts, mailboxes and even trash bins on Wednesday, with giant banners defying gusty winds at DiMillo’s floating restaurant and on construction scaffolding in the Old Port. “Long live the Valentine’s Day Bandit,” said Cary Tyson, executive director of Portland Downtown. On the website, people can download and print the simple, red hearts and become a bandit. It wasn’t until she started school, she said, that she learned that other people didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day with the same fervor.

The panel that blew out is used to plug an unused emergency exit. Bolts appeared to have been missing from a door plug that blew out midair on Boeing 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines last month, according to a new report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The accident prompted a grounding of the Max 9 by the Federal Aviation Administration for much of last month. "Over these last few weeks, I've had tough conversations with our customers, with our regulators, congressional leaders and more. The Jan. 5 accident occurred just as Boeing was trying to ramp up output.

Boeing on Wednesday is set to report fourth-quarter results and answer to investors eager to hear how a midair blowout on one of the plane maker's new 737 Max 9s could reverberate through the aviation industry in the months, if not years, ahead. The effect of that accident and subsequent fallout won't be felt in Wednesday's earnings results but will likely be mentioned in Boeing's outlook. Federal investigators are examining whether the door plug was improperly installed before the Max 9 plane was handed off to Alaska Airlines late last year. The Boeing 737 Max is the company's best-selling plane. The company had the first of several production stand-downs last week to discuss with workers manufacturing problems and other potential improvements to Boeing's processes.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Several elected leaders in Oregon declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for downtown Portland over the public health and public safety crisis fueled by fentanyl. The declaration is a recommendation from a governor-established task force that met for several months last year to determine ways to rejuvenate downtown Portland. The effort also extends the Portland Police Bureau’s partnership with Oregon State Police to jointly patrol downtown streets for fentanyl sales. At the state level, Oregon lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would undo a key part of the state’s drug decriminalization law. Public opinion has soured on it as public drug use has become more visible because of growing homelessness.

SEATTLE (AP) — Facing severe criticism after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max over Oregon this month, Boeing said Monday that it is withdrawing a request for a safety exemption needed to certify a new model of the plane. Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and Tammy Duckworth, chair of its aviation safety subcommittee, urged the Federal Aviation Administration to deny the request. "I hope this means they can quickly develop a compliant design across other MAX planes.”The FAA grounded all Max 9s in the U.S. the day after the blowout. The 737 Max went into service in May 2017. Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Stan Deal said in a message to Boeing employees Friday that the company’s most immediate goal is to help airlines restore operations.

Alaska Airlines N704AL is seen grounded in a hangar at Portland International Airport in Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 9, 2024. The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday halted Boeing 's planned expansion of its 737 Max aircraft production, but it cleared a path for the manufacturer's Max 9 to return to service nearly three weeks after a door plug blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight. "Let me be clear: This won't be back to business as usual for Boeing," said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker in a statement Wednesday. The grounding forced United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, the two U.S. airlines with the planes, to cancel hundreds of flights. The FAA is investigating Boeing's production lines after the Alaska flight.

The NewsThe union representing teachers, counselors and other school employees in Portland, Ore., reached a tentative deal with the city's public school district on Sunday, ending a strike that has kept nearly 45,000 students out of classes for more than three weeks in Oregon’s largest district. That is about in the middle of what the district had offered and what the union had asked for at the start of the strike. The strike has drawn attention to public school funding in Oregon. (Minneapolis students missed 14 school days during a strike last year.) The strike, which kept students out of school for nearly the entire month of November, could risk amplifying that message in Portland.
