CNN —Cuba suffered a second nationwide blackout Saturday morning, hours after officials said power was being slowly restored. “At 6:15 am a new total outage occurred of the national electroenergetic system,” a post on the Cuba Electrical Union’s official Telegram channel said. Millions of people have been left without power over the last several days as the aging Cuban electrical grid repeatedly collapsed. Cuban officials have blamed a confluence of events from increased US economic sanctions to disruptions caused by recent hurricanes and the impoverished state of the island’s infrastructure. The country’s health minister, José Angel Portal Miranda, said on X that the country’s health facilities were running on generators and that health workers continued to provide vital services.

Havana CNN —Cuba’s electrical grid shut down on Friday, putting the country into a blackout after the failure of one of the island’s major power plants, according to its energy ministry. In a statement on X, the ministry said “the failure” of the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant caused “the total disconnection of the National Electrical System” from 11 a.m. This week, Cuba’s increasingly energy-strapped government called for draconian measures to save power, including telling many workers to stay home. Millions of people on the communist-run island have been left without power over the last several days as the aging Cuban electrical grid repeatedly collapsed. The Cuban Electric Union has also reported that 37 power generation plants are out of service due to lack of fuel.

Buck and Gracie Close are funding a basic income program for victims of unjust policing. They view the program as a form of reparations for their family's history as slave owners. Small-scale guaranteed basic income programs have sprouted around the country in recent years, inspired in part by the success of pandemic-era cash handouts. These basic income programs offer unrestricted cash payments to specific groups of vulnerable low-income residents for a limited time period. The programs differ from a universal basic income, which would offer regular cash payments to all residents regardless of their financial status.

Gang members brandishing automatic rifles stormed through a town in Haiti’s main breadbasket region, killing at least 70 and forcing over 6,000 to flee, causing widespread shock even in a country grown accustomed to outbreaks of violence. More people were severely injured in the attack in the early hours of Thursday at Pont-Sonde, in the agricultural region of Artibonite in western Haiti. “For now, reinforcements are at the location to contain the situation and security forces are in control,” the spokesperson said. But TikTok users — many of whom speculated the rug was evidence of a larger crime — expressed disappointment on Friday when the woman, who goes by Katie Santry on TikTok, revealed that the rug she uncovered didn’t contain a body. In comments, TikTok users offered their own theories on what they described as “rug gate” — advising Santry to contact lawyers and psychics and asking Santry about her neighbors. Some also speculated that missing people from Columbus-area cold cases could be buried in the rug. TikTok comments encouraged Santry to contact the police, who initially told her to try digging up the rug herself, she said. “There were no bones, there was no body, it was just a rug … This should be a sigh of relief.

New York CNN —Next month’s presidential election could make America’s hostile media climate even worse for journalists. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said the “corrosive political environment” has intensified safety concerns for journalists – forcing newsrooms to conduct safety assessments, evaluate online threats, and hire extra security.

An Israeli-designed radar system encircling the island can detect passersby, in low visibility, from half a mile away. Often described as "butlers with badges," the Indian Creek police force is unlike most of its counterparts. With the new security system, the Indian Creek police appear to have turbocharged their enforcement of regulations in the surrounding waters. That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

The Haitian Times, an online publication, has covered Haiti and the Haitian diaspora around the world since it was founded in 1999. Springfield, Ohio, was already on the Haitian Times’ radar well before the conspiracy theories began. The Haitian Times covered the comments aggressively — describing them as racist and false. The day after the debate, The Haitian Times published an article reporting that Haitian immigrant families in Ohio were “under attack” amid the intense swirl of false claims.
