China will never commit to renouncing the use of force over Taiwan, the government in Beijing said on Wednesday after another bout of war games and a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the scene of a famous defeat for Taiwanese forces. China will never commit to renouncing the use of force over Taiwan, the government in Beijing said on Wednesday after another bout of war games and a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the scene of a famous defeat for Taiwanese forces. China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, staged a day of large-scale drills around the island on Monday that it said were a warning to "separatist acts" following last week's national day speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. "But we will never commit ourselves to renouncing the use of force," he said. Taiwan has close though unofficial relations with the United States, a major arms supplier, and its allies.

After years of pushing, everything looks ready for Saudi Arabia’s billion-dollar move to become a major force in tennis to take off — with one major hitch. The Ministry of Sport of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) and the WTA Tour then announced a three-year deal to host the tour finals. These moves raised Saudi Arabia’s tennis profile, but its potential new tournament at the start of the season was seen as the most important of its tennis investments — and its most divisive. It would cement Saudi Arabia’s place at the center of the sport, bringing with it an extensively criticized human rights record. Saudi Arabia’s moves into tennis have roiled the organisations behind the Grand Slam tournaments.

Having failed to secure a cease-fire, President Joe Biden’s administration is signaling that it supports Israel’s operations against Iran-backed Hezbollah and the group’s eventual withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Adopted by the United Nations in 2006 after the last major war between Israel and Hezbollah, 1701 was designed to pave the way for a lasting peace. With Hezbollah excluded, the Lebanese army and thousands of peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) would have maintained an armed presence south of Lebanon’s Litani River. Smoke billows during Israeli shelling on the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Kila in southern Lebanon. More than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack and an estimated 1.2 million have been displaced, according to Lebanese officials.

Smoke rises after North Korea blows up sections of inter-Korean roads on its side of the border between the two Koreas, according to South Korea's military, as seen from the South Korean side, October 15, 2024, in this screen grab from a handout video. South Korean Defense MinistryNorth Korea has blown up sections of inter-Korean roads and rail lines on its side of the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas, South Korea's military said on Tuesday, ratcheting up tensions on the Korean peninsula. The explosions came after Pyongyang pledged last week to completely cut off the inter-Korean roads and railways and further fortify the areas on its side of the border. Around 180 billion won ($132 million) in taxpayers' money was spent by South Korea to rebuild the inter-Korean road, according to the Yonhap news agency. North Korea on Friday said the drones had scattered a "huge number" of anti-North leaflets, in what it called political and military provocation that could lead to armed conflict.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea is getting ready to blow up roads that cross the heavily militarized border with South Korea, Seoul said Monday, amid an escalating war of words after the North accused its rival of sending drones over its capital, Pyongyang. North Korea on Friday accused South Korea of sending drones to scatter a “huge number” of anti-North leaflets over Pyongyang, in what it called political and military provocation that could lead to armed conflict. The North Korean army said last week that it would completely cut roads and railways connected to South Korea and fortify the areas on its side of the border, KCNA reported. North Korea over the weekend warned of a “horrible disaster” if South Korean drones were again found to be flying over Pyongyang. South Korea has sought to strengthen its anti-drone defenses since 2022, Lee said, when five North Korean drones entered its airspace and flew over the capital, Seoul, for several hours.

CNN —Concerns are mounting for the safety of United Nations peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon amid Israel’s ground incursion, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix warned on Thursday, after Israeli fire resulted in the injury of two UN troops. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported early Thursday that the peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli tank fired toward an observation tower at its headquarters in the southern Lebanese city Naqoura. “The IDF is operating in southern Lebanon and maintains routine communication with UNIFIL,” the IDF said in a statement after Thursday’s incident. UN peacekeepers have been stationed in southern Lebanon since 2006, per a mandate by the United Nations Security Council. On the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, Gaza’s north was hit with more Israeli strikes, with no end in sight to the war devastating the enclave. Israel’s objective of defeating Hamas still seems far from reach as its military offensives in Gaza continue to ramp up. Israel launched a new ground operation in northern Gaza on Sunday and encircled the Jabalya refugee camp, where it says it saw signs of Hamas regrouping. Earlier this year, Israel’s military said it had defeated Hamas in northern Gaza, only to announce new offensives there in May. The camp was targeted early on in Israel’s response to Hamas’ attacks one year ago and has been struck several times during the war.

CNN —Editor’s Note: This essay is adapted from Chris Wallace’s book, “Countdown 1960.”The 1960 presidential election changed everything. Countdown 1960 is the riveting new history by Chris Wallace, bestselling author of Countdown 1945 and Countdown bin Laden, offering a fresh take on 1960 and the dramatic 11 months leading up to a deeply relevant election for the ages. To put it simply: There is good reason to believe the presidential election of 1960 was stolen. And yet, in 1960, the candidate who “lost” refused to contest the results and interfere with the peaceful transfer of power. Israel and Hezbollah have been stuck in the tit-for-tat horror of escalation chicken for nearly a year. But the greater the harm inflicted on Hezbollah recently, the more likely a shorter-term Israeli success has seemed.
