Loh’s way of doing that is by creating Zoom classes that feel more like social media than traditional learning. Called live.poshenloh.com, the platform employs exceptionally talented US high school students to teach mathematics via livestream. Loh came up with the idea during the pandemic, when livestream learning became commonplace, but not necessarily engaging for students. “Most people had the experience that a Zoom math class was very effective at putting children to sleep,” he told CNN. “I didn’t realize that mathematics and the performing arts could harmonize together in such a wonderful way.”

I finally got my chance during the 2017 Great American Eclipse, but capturing that perfect shot from my dreams was not easy. As I looked at flight paths, I realized that a Southwest flight from Portland, Oregon to St. Louis, Missouri would travel basically along the eclipse path. But then the flight crew clarified that they were deliberately delaying the flight so it would be inside the moon's shadow. Lucky for me, the flight crew and pilot took my mission to heart. What I'm doing differently this yearJon Carmichael was thousands of feet in the air when he took a series of photos that culminated to produce this iconic image, considered one of the best eclipse photos ever taken.

But one fabled device has left scientists speculating on its existence for hundreds of years — the death ray. For his 2022 science project, Sener recreated the Archimedes screw, a device for raising and moving water. Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Archimedes’ death ray is more commonly speculated to have been an array of several mirrors or polished shields. Sener’s mom, Melanie, was not surprised by her son’s choice in science project.

I offer to pay you $200 in one year if you give me $190 today. It’s the kind of math problem you might encounter in real life, as opposed to, say, whether the cosecant of a 30-degree angle is 1 or 2. Math and personal finance make a perfect fit. A survey in 2022 funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation found that 61 percent of parents of students said math education should be “relevant to the real world” but that only 21 percent said it was. What to watch in South Carolina’s Republican primary
  + stars: | 2024-02-24 | by ( Gregory Krieg | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign has for weeks been looking ahead to the Republican primary in South Carolina, her home state where she was twice elected governor. The primary in South Carolina is open, meaning Democrats and independents can cast ballots in the GOP race. The former president does not need to open a larger tent in order to win in South Carolina. It’s obviously not insurmountable, and with 50 at stake in South Carolina, Haley could theoretically jump into the lead. South Carolina awards 29 of its delegates to the statewide winner and three apiece to the leader in each of its seven congressional districts.

Bridgit Mendler's path from Disney Channel star to space startup CEO started with — quite literally — an accident. The 31-year-old is the CEO and co-founder of Northwood Space, a company based in El Segundo, California that aims to mass-produce ground stations — otherwise known as the antennae that communicate with space satellites. "While everybody else was making their sourdough starters [during the Covid-19 pandemic], we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot ... and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellites," Mendler told CNBC on Monday while announcing her startup. "I'm studying anthropology," Mendler told ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in 2015. While at Harvard, she served as co-president of the Harvard Space Law Society, according to her LinkedIn profile.

It turns out the Robinhood crowd was onto something when they piled into the stock market during the pandemic. As of 2019, people under 40 held 4.9% of total US wealth even though they’re 37% of the population. People over 54, who make up a similar share of the population, held 71.6% of total wealth. Nearing the end of 2023, under-40s controlled 6.7% of total wealth, while those over 54 had 72.8%. Now, the challenge is to try to keep at it, get some more luck in the stock market and, God willing, their own homes.

I arrived by means of mathematics, specifically simple mathematics — algebra, geometry and calculus, the kind of mathematics that adolescents do. I am only a mathematical tourist, but my experience has led me to believe that mathematics is rife with intimations of a divine presence. For many mathematicians, there is no question that God is somehow involved. Newton, for example, believed that mathematics exemplified thoughts in the mind of God. The first is the question of whether mathematics is created or discovered.

International skating’s governing body on Tuesday stripped Russia of its victory in the team figure skating event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and awarded the gold medal to the United States. The move came one day after the teenage Russian star Kamila Valieva, who had led her team to an apparent victory in the team event, was banned for four years for doping. But rather than disqualify Russia’s team for including an ineligible skater, the governing body, the International Skating Union, adjusted the results of the competition in a way that awarded Russia the bronze medal instead. In a statement announcing the revised results, the skating union said that it had disqualified Valieva and dismissed all the points she had accumulated. Those alterations, it said, put the United States in first, with Japan second and Russia third.

The court ordered new maps with contiguous districts, but also said the maps must not favor one party over another. Following Friday's map submissions, a pair of consultants hired by the Supreme Court will analyze the proposals and issue a report by Feb. 1. The consultants could choose to ignore all of the maps submitted last week and put forward their own plan. The 50-49 Republican majority map was submitted by Law Forward, the Madison-based law firm representing Democratic voters that brought the lawsuit. However, as a product of the American public school system and a teacher in China, I notice a number of distinct differences characterizing education. China represents the world's largest population of English language learners, and this multilingual environment impacts the school and the students. One can often hear students speaking English together in the halls due to either school policy or an interest in the language. China boasts a nearly flawless high school graduation rate, and students often begin their education in an early years program. Finding a Rare Use for Trigonometry After High School

Now, a new study offers evidence to suggest that theory might be plausible, according to a news release from New York University. … Our experiments could add to the understanding of how these yardangs form,” he said. More on the mysterious Great Sphinx originsWhile the Great Sphinx of Giza has its mysteries — what it originally looked like and why it was made — it is believed that the 66-foot-tall (20-meter-tall) statue was carved out of a single piece of limestone. “There is too much evidence of human intervention in the construction of the Great Sphinx to make the yardang theory feasible,” Ikram said. The New York University researchers said their results suggest that Sphinx-like structures can form under fairly commonplace conditions, but their findings don’t resolve the mysteries behind yardangs and the Great Sphinx.
