Heavy rains from Hurricane Helene caused flooding across western North Carolina, like here in Asheville. Melissa Sue Gerrits/Getty ImagesBut only about 2.6% of the 4.3 million properties across the state — or around 115,000 properties — had flood insurance as of June 2024, according to private provider Neptune Flood Insurance, which analyzed data from the government-backed National Flood Insurance Program. North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. "We don't think of western North Carolina and the Appalachian mountains as an area that has significant flood risk."

As concerns about flooding, extreme temperatures, and wildfires grow, this tool also helps agents inform their clients in discussing climate risk, insurance, and long-term affordability." But climate risk firm First Street, which incorporates the effects of climate change into its property risk scores, shows nearly 12% of homes in the state at flood risk. Each for-sale listing on Zillow now displays First Street risk scores for flood, fire, wind, air and heat. This is especially true for the flood risk, because climate change is already intensifying the severity of rainfall, even in minor storms. More than 80% of buyers now consider climate risk when purchasing a home, according to a survey by Zillow.

Colorectal cancer cases have been rising in people younger than 50 over the last two decades. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force isn’t the first group to suggest lowering the screening age. The new study found that colorectal cancer screening among 45 to 49-year-olds remains low overall, but increased threefold following the 2021 guideline change. “One of the biggest predictors of whether you get age-appropriate cancer screening is whether or not you have insurance,” Lieu said. Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening, since it can detect not only cancerous tumors, but precancerous polyps that can be removed before they can turn into cancer.

Vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz faced off in their first and only debate Tuesday night, squaring off over everything from foreign policy and the economy to the 2020 election and abortion rights. Fact-check: Is housing 60% more expensive during the Biden administration? “Iran, which launched this attack, has received over $100 billion in unfrozen assets thanks to the Kamala Harris administration," Vance said. However, weather-related events like Hurricane Helene are generally considered to be outside an airline’s control, meaning passengers have relatively few rights to compensation, experts said. Airlines make concessions in some casesSome airlines are making concessions tied to Hurricane Helene, though they vary by carrier and geography. For example, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have alerts about flooding in the Southeast. American Airlines is also giving leeway to passengers scheduled to travel through Augusta, Georgia, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4. Plus, policies bought after Helene became a named storm generally won’t cover claims related to it.

While overall inflation has slowed, insurance costs are taking a bigger bite out of many household budgets. Car insurance premiums have also shot up. Bankrate estimates that in September the average cost for full coverage car insurance is $2,348 a year. Extreme weather events, higher replacement and repair costs, and increased medical expenses after accidents have boosted car insurance rates, experts say. Car insurance discounts range from safe driver and good student discounts to taking a defensive driving course.

A woman who had life-changing results on a popular weight loss drug struggled to afford it for years. AdvertisementTara Rothenhoefer, a 49-year-old Florida resident, says her life changed when she joined a clinical trial for a promising new weight-loss medication. While regulated, these compounded drugs aren't FDA-approved, raising concerns from doctors about variations in quality. The grey market of weight-loss drugs is vast and complicated. In August, Eli Lilly halved the price of its weight-loss drug Zepbound through single-dose vials — a bid to lure customers back to brand-name drugs, analysts said.

But there is an alternative to a fire sale: They can use life insurance to foot the bill with a neat trick. Instead of owning a life insurance policy directly, they take out a policy and put it inside a trust. The irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT) collects the death benefit, pays the tax bill, and distributes whatever is left according to the insured individual's wishes. For an ultra-rich taxpayer with a $10 million life insurance policy, using an ILIT could save $4 million in taxes. Make sure you're getting a life insurance policy that makes financial sense.

Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

Ajit Jain, Warren's Buffett's insurance chief and top executive, sold more than half of his stake in Berkshire Hathaway , a new regulatory filing showed. The 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations dumped 200 shares of Berkshire Class A shares on Monday at an average price of $695,418 per share for roughly $139 million. That left him holding just 61 shares, while family trusts established by himself and his spouse for the benefit of his descendants hold 55 shares and his nonprofit corporation, the Jain Foundation, owns 50 shares. Monday's sale represented 55% of his total stake in Berkshire. "This appears to be a signal that Ajit views Berkshire as being fully valued," said David Kass, a finance professor at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

CNN —Authorities in Madrid have announced that they will revoke the operating licenses of e-scooter rental companies Lime, Dott and Tier – a move that will see rented e-scooters banished from the streets of the Spanish capital. Lime, Dott and Tier were the companies selected to offer e-scooter rental in Madrid, with permits granted for 2,000 scooters each. The council’s decision means “rental scooters will disappear from the city from October,” it said. A spokesman for Dott told CNN on Monday that the company had received an official notification from Madrid city hall on Thursday. That’s made home insurance increasingly unaffordable or even inaccessible – and that’s leaving more people in the same position as the Daneaus. California’s largest insurer, State Farm, requested a 30% rate increase for its homeowner’s line last month. Last year, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara reached an agreement with insurers with an aim to cover approximately 85% of properties in high-risk areas. “[My insurance plan] wasn’t canceled but my insurance company increased the rates quite a bit,” she said.
