TOPSHOT - Fighters fire towards Syrian Army troops in the Rashidin district on the outskirts of Aleppo on Nov. 29, 2024. The more than 50-year Assad dynastic dictatorship was on the cusp of collapse on Sunday, as rebel forces seized the capital of Damascus in a lightning offensive that has swept the country's largest cities in a matter of days. "We declare the city of Damascus free from the tyrant Bashar al-Assad," Hassan Abdul-Ghani, senior HTS commander, said in a post on WhatsApp. The whereabouts of President Bashar al-Assad, who assumed leadership in 2000 after the death of his father Hafez, were uncertain. Multiple media reports, which CNBC could not independently confirm, state he has fled Damascus.

To say college football has never gotten their postseason right is an understatement. And, once again, despite what appears to be a successful expansion of the college football postseason in 2024, the powers that be have created a system that is exclusive, not inclusive. Ultimately, it’s a system that could shrink the world of college football in a way that, long term, will cost everyone. All any college football fan has wanted over the last 40 years is to create a better way to crown a champion. This college football committee fails on all three of those fronts.

JERUSALEM — The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah appeared on the verge of collapse this week — something that is not a surprise to many Israelis. On Monday night, Israeli strikes on two southern Lebanese villages killed at least 10 people, the nation’s Health Ministry said. That was a response to an earlier Hezbollah attack on Israeli military positions in the disputed Shebaa Farms, which itself was in retaliation for what the militant group said were multiple ceasefire violations. Rockets fired from southern Lebanon are intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defense system in northern Israel on Aug. 4. The Oct. 7 Hamas attack changed her calculation.

LONDON — The world is entering a “third nuclear age,” the head of the British armed forces has warned, with world-ending weapons once again spreading globally and international agreements to control them collapsing. He also cited China’s rapid development to become the world’s second fully-fledged nuclear competitor to the United States, alongside Russia. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us,” Radakin said. Last year, Russia suspended its participation from New START, an agreement that sought to put verifiable limits on Washington’s and Moscow’s nuclear arsenals. And in 2019, then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, Treaty, accusing Russia of violating the agreement.

The effort to locate a Pennsylvania grandmother who appears to have fallen through a sinkhole into a decades-old mine shaft while searching for her cat has likely shifted from a rescue to recovery mission, authorities said Wednesday. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Steve Limani told reporters that there had been diminishing oxygen levels and no sign of life in the shaft, which he estimated was at least 30 feet deep. “Unless it’s a miracle, most likely this is a recovery,” he said. Elizabeth Pollard Pennsylvania State PoliceHe said there was little doubt Elizabeth Pollard, 64, had plunged through what he described as a thin piece of ground in Unity Township, roughly 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Alexandra Rutkay was on a movie set when her side hustle went viral in June. Rutkay, a full-time makeup artist, was working a 16-hour day on the set of "A Complete Unknown," an upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, when her phone started buzzing. After two years of inconsistent sales at her New York-based side hustle Citymouse, which makes fashion-forward mini-diaper bags, two glowing reviews of her bags simultaneously gained views on TikTok and Instagram. Within three days, Citymouse sold out its inventory of more than 500 bags, bringing in roughly $53,000 in sales, says Rutkay, 41. No longer satisfied by a decent paycheck, she wanted to build generational wealth she could pass down — and entrepreneurship was her first thought.

Marine Le Pen's National Rally party tabled a vote of no confidence in Barnier. watch now'Aftermath of the FAFSA fiasco'Experts had warned that problems with the new FAFSA would result in fewer students applying for financial aid and fewer students enrolling in college. "Freshman enrollment dropped by a dramatic 5% this fall in the aftermath of the FAFSA fiasco, reversing previous gains," said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Submitting a FAFSA is one of the best predictors of whether a high school senior will go on to college, according to the National College Attainment Network. "FAFSA completion and college enrollment move in the same direction — that relationship is pretty consistent," said Bill DeBaun, NCAN's senior director. As a result of changes to the financial aid application, more students now qualify for a Pell Grant, a type of aid awarded solely based on financial need.

Traditionally, companies have only paid a 401(k) match to workers based on their voluntary contributions to the workplace retirement plan. CNN —Amnesty International on Wednesday said that it had gathered “sufficient evidence to believe” that Israel’s conduct during the war in Gaza amounts to genocide against the Palestinian people – a charge the Israeli government has vehemently denied. Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas-led militants carried out an attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, killing 1,200 people and taking another 251 hostage. Israel’s military called Amnesty’s report “entirely baseless” and said it failed to account for the both the operational realities faced by Israeli soldiers within Gaza. The French government is on the brink of collapse and investors are gearing up for a volatile week of trading, with some eyeing opportunities amid the chaos. The Oat - Bund spread, as the two respective sovereign bonds are known, shows the negative sentiment investors have toward French government bonds relative to German government bonds. It comes after Barnier said he would force through cuts in social security, to lower the government's 6% budget deficit, without a vote. If the recently appointed government is toppled, Barnier would be the shortest-serving prime minister in France's modern history. "They're agents of chaos for little political end," Everett added.
