Those are Chelsea’s next seven Premier League fixtures before they travel to face Manchester City on January 25. At a time when the other challengers are showing real fragility — Arsenal drawing with Fulham, Manchester City dropping points at Crystal Palace this weekend — Chelsea are pretty consistent. Wednesday is a bit juicier: big early 90s vibes with Milan vs Crvena zvezda, but for something a little more contemporary, there’s Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona and Juventus vs Manchester City. That’s the men: the Women’s Champions League is also in town and it’s bringing Valerenga vs Arsenal, Manchester City vs St Polten, Bayern Munich vs Juventus and Chelsea vs Twente. The jumble of fixtures we’ve come to expect of this competition throws up Viktoria Plzen vs Manchester United, Rangers vs Tottenham and Ajax vs Lazio.

Omnicom and Interpublic Group plan a $13.25 billion merger that would create the world's largest ad-agency company. Industry insiders say the deal reflects an ad sector under threat from Big Tech and AI. Being big matters as the industry wrestles with disruption from the might of Big Tech players and the advent of artificial intelligence. The $13.25 billion all-stock deal would merge Omnicom's creative and media-buying agencies, such as BBDO and Omnicom Media Group, with IPG's McCann Worldgroup and Mediabrands. The research firm Forrester said last year that the rise of automation could lead to the loss of 33,000 jobs within ad agencies by 2030.

Interviews with more than a dozen individuals who worked with Patel shed new light on his path to power. Earl Matthews, a former Trump official who worked with Patel in the White House, said he brings a unique resume to the job. ‘Why is Kash here?’By 2019, after Republicans lost their House majority, Nunes worked to make good on his promise to help Patel get to the White House.

President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump spoke on the phone over the Thanksgiving holiday last week, according to two people familiar with the call. The previously unreported phone call marks the only known time Biden and Trump have spoken since the president-elect visited the White House for a meeting in the Oval Office on Nov. 13. The two people familiar with the conversation said Trump called Biden to wish him a happy Thanksgiving. Trump did not host Biden at the White House after his election defeat, defying the customary invitation. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing the week before the 2024 election that Biden would attend January’s inauguration regardless of the outcome, and White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates reiterated last week that Biden plans to attend the ceremony.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and his senior aides are discussing the idea of issuing preemptive pardons for those whom President-elect Donald Trump has scorned in recent years as he has hinted about plans for retribution, two sources familiar with the discussions confirmed. Some Democrats and “Never Trump” Republicans have supported the notion of preemptive pardons to protect people under a new Trump presidency. Previous presidents have issued such pardons, including George H.W. Back in the Biden White House, there is work being done on the president’s use of clemency authority on criminal justice cases. Advocates, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are encouraging the president to act on a variety of cases they say are worthy of clemency.

“The litany of things that will start to topple is profound,” said James Hodge, a public health law expert at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. “One in 3,000 kids who gets measles is going to die. The U.S. has seen 16 measles outbreaks this year — 89% of cases are in unvaccinated people — and a whooping cough epidemic is the worst since 2012. “If you overturn the administrative state, the impact on public health will be long-term and serious,” said Dorit Reiss, a professor at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law. It would take years before enough children died before people said, ‘I guess measles is a bad thing,’” she said.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been at the helm of the nation’s transportation infrastructure — including its aviation system — during a tumultuous four years. Then, as air travel dramatically rebounded, airline policies, including cancellations and the perks included in a ticket, changed. Yet passengers got new rights, with Mr. Buttigieg carving out a stance of aggressively holding the airlines accountable. As Mr. Buttigieg leaves office, there are rules that haven’t gone into effect.
