She confronted me in the middle of a parking lot full of nosey moms at school pick-up. I stood in that parking lot long after all the cars and stares had left, overwhelmed with sadness. It was more devastating than any romantic breakup I've ever experienced — and I've been dumped via text by a boyfriend.

The new OpenAI board is on an active search for six new members with expertise in fields from technology to safety and policy. OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever will no longer be part of the board, Altman said. Trump's legal team argued against his gag order in his upcoming election interference trial. AdvertisementA panel of three judges on Monday appeared highly skeptical of arguments from Donald Trump's legal team seeking to revoke a gag order that bars him from attacking potential witnesses in his election interference criminal case. Depending on "the context," Lauro argued, Trump would be permitted to pressure possible witnesses not to cooperate with prosecutors. The gag order in the election interference case is separate from a gag order in another ongoing civil trial against Trump in New York. He found that Trump violated it earlier in November, though an appeals court on Thursday temporarily lifted the order.

The letter affirms President Biden’s opposition to a cease-fire, challenging demands from hundreds of officials that Israel halt its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s government and Mr. Biden have rejected such a step as incompatible with Israel’s goal of destroying Hamas. The newer letter was delivered to Mr. Biden on Tuesday with 115 names, but its organizers continued to collect signatures until Friday. The earlier letter of dissent was delivered to Mr. Biden with a signature count but without names, although the signatories are known to that letter’s organizers. She cited an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll conducted early this month that found that half of Democrats approved of Mr. Biden’s handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Investment firm JAT Capital sent a scathing letter to the board of the new Bed Bath & Beyond on Friday saying it has refused to answer questions from shareholders and is engaging in what the investment firm called unprecedented "poor behavior." Earlier this month, JAT called on Beyond to fire Johnson. In its letter, dated Friday, JAT questioned why Johnson's board seat was removed after his ouster and said it was an attempt to weaken "shareholders ability to have a say." JAT called on Beyond's board to answer its questions, once and for all, and for everyone from vendors to sell-side analysts to demand more transparency. The actions cited below which the Board has taken in the last 60 days appear to be to the detriment of the company and shareholders," the letter states.

As K-Brooks' message said, all platforms are susceptible to bad actors — and child predators certainly exist on other social sites, too. According to K-Brooks's post, Omegle had worked with law enforcement and "there was a great deal of moderation behind the scenes, including state-of-the-art AI operating in concert with a wonderful team of human moderators. “The president still believes that a reoccupation of Gaza by Israeli forces is not good. In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” last month, Biden said it would be a “big mistake” for Israel to occupy Gaza. Israeli government officials have not yet elaborated on how Gaza would be governed should they succeed in eliminating Hamas. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Tuesday that Israel will “retain complete freedom of action to respond to any situation in the Gaza Strip” once the war ends. That hasn’t changed since October 7 and it’s not going to change going forward,” Kirby said.

Ankara, Turkey CNN —Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday asserted he made progress on the goals he set for a whirlwind Middle East trip as he departed with few tangible results to show for a flurry of meetings with leaders about the Israel-Hamas war. Meanwhile, the civilian death toll in the war-torn Gaza Strip is mounting, and concerns about regional conflagration loom large. There have been no further releases of any hostages held by Hamas since Israel escalated its offensive in Gaza. But we also believe that a pause could help advance that proposition as well,” Blinken said Monday. Throughout the trip, Blinken repeatedly spoke of the need to discuss the “day of” but also the “day after” for the region and Gaza.

CNN —A wave of departures by election officials in key states risks adding new stress to the nation’s election system ahead of next year’s presidential contest, voting rights groups and several state election chiefs warn. The growing alarm over the resignations and retirements comes as officials say election workers continue to face a barrage of threats and harassment and partisan interference in their duties, first ignited by false claims of a stolen White House election in 2020. In King County, Washington – which includes Seattle – Julie Wise, the county election director, recalled receiving a letter over the summer with a rant about elections. Election watchdogs say more action is needed – including boosting federal funding and extending a federal law that criminalizes the release of restricted personal information about federal workers to cover election officials. Brinson Bell began tracking the departures when she became the state’s election chief that year.

Opinion | The Reactionary Futurism of Marc Andreessen
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Ezra Klein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
I think the Republican Party’s collapse into incoherence reflects the fact that much of the modern right is reactionary, not conservative. It’s a coalition obsessed with where we went wrong: the weakness, the political correctness, the liberalism, the trigger warnings, the smug elites. The Silicon Valley cohort Andreessen belongs to has added a bit to this formula. Rather, it’s the pairing of the reactionary’s sodden take on modern society with the futurist’s starry imagining of the bright tomorrow. So call it what it is: reactionary futurism.

VC Marc Andreessen wrote a lengthy missive this week, titled "The Techno-Optimist Manifesto." The risk of a world war that includes the US and China has risen to 50%, the elite investor says. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Israel-Hamas clash threatens to spark other bloody battles, meaning it's now a coin toss whether a world war breaks out that includes the US and China, Ray Dalio has warned. "If they spread to other countries, most importantly the major countries, there will be a much more horrific hot world war," he said. "It seems to me that the Israel-Hamas war is another classic, unfortunate step toward a more violent and encompassing international war." Dalio said his "pipe dream" would be for everyone to recognize the horror of a world war and come together to avoid one.

CNN —As the dust settles on the tenure of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there are lessons the Republican Party should learn. As the Republican caucus considers its next steps, they must choose a leader whose stewardship signals a clear break from the past. Here are the ways that Trump triggered the events that fueled McCarthy’s downfall. In 2022, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former football star whose controversial candidacy was fueled by his connection to the former president, met the same fate. Fast forward less than a year and Trump was nowhere to be found when McCarthy’s fate as speaker hung in the balance.

20 senators are warning President Biden against a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia. The US is considering a defense pact to entice Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel. The New York Times reported last month that the Biden administration is considering a security agreement with Saudi Arabia "resembling those with Japan or South Korea." While saying they share the White House's goal of restoring ties between its two Middle Eastern allies, the senators argue that a defense pact with Saudi Arabia would upend decades of US policy. The effort to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia was kickstarted during the Trump administration, despite Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordering the killing of an American citizen, Jamal Khashoggi, according to a US intelligence assessment.

Interviews with more than a dozen Republican donors and their allies revealed hand-wringing, magical thinking, calls to arms and, for some, fatalism. “If things don’t change quickly, people are going to despair,” Mr. Levine said in an interview. He is among the optimists who believe Mr. Trump’s support is not as robust as the polls suggest and who see a quickly closing window to rally behind another candidate. Elizabeth Warren asks SEC to investigate Tesla

New York CNN —Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked the SEC to investigate Tesla and its board of directors to determine whether they violated securities laws after CEO Elon Musk took over Twitter last year. Warren wrote that that disorder has spilled over into Musk’s management of one of the most influential electric car companies in the United States. “Tesla is publicly owned, and Mr. Musk and the Board have responsibilities to shareholders and the public in their management of the company,” Warren wrote. “These close relationships may explain the board’s persistent inability or unwillingness to address the concerns posed by Mr. Musk’s actions,” Warren wrote. Last December, the Democratic senator wrote Tesla shareholders may be hurt by its CEO’s ownership of Twitter in a letter to company chair Robyn Denholm.
