Read previewContaminated milk may be spreading H5N1 bird flu between dairy cattle, contributing to a major outbreak across 12 US states. A new study shows the virus can survive for over an hour in raw (unpasteurized) milk left on the surfaces of materials used in equipment for milking dairy cattle. That's a clue in the mystery of how the virus has spread so rapidly between US dairy cattle, infecting over 130 herds in Idaho, Michigan, Colorado, Texas, and more. The cattle outbreak has scientists increasingly worried that the H5N1 virus could mutate enough to cause an outbreak in humans. However, the study suggests that cleaning milking equipment between cows and outfitting workers with protective gear could help prevent the spread.

“After careful consideration, we are revising our sponsorship model,” read an official statement shared on the SXSW website. You know you’ve touched a nerve with progressive activists when they tell you not just that you’re wrong but that you’re on the other side. Such is the fate of any old-school liberal or mainstream Democrat who deviates from progressive dogma. New York magazine’s liberal political columnist Jonathan Chait was accused of lending “legitimacy to a reactionary moral panic” for critiquing political correctness. But the goal and the effect is to narrow the focus of acceptable discourse by Democrats and their allies. If liberals are denounced for “punching left” when they express a reasonable difference of opinion, potentially winning ideas are banished.

A retired four-star U.S. Navy admiral, who was once the military branch's second-highest-ranking officer, was arrested on Friday for a bribery scheme with two tech CEOs, the Department of Justice announced. In 2021, Burke allegedly told his staff to award Kim and Messenger a $355,000 military contract. In exchange, Kim and Messenger allegedly promised Burke employment at their company in the future. According to Parlatore, Burke only worked at Next Jump for a couple of months and left the organization in part due to "personality conflicts." Though the Fat Leonard scheme is not directly connected to Burke's case, Parlatore side-eyed the DOJ's timing in bringing Burke's bribery charges.

A retired four-star admiral was arrested on Friday on charges that he took part in a bribery scheme while commanding American naval forces in Europe, Russia and most of Africa, the Justice Department said. Federal prosecutors said that Robert P. Burke, 62, of Coconut Creek, Fla., who was once the Navy’s second-highest-ranking officer, steered a government contract to a company in exchange for a job at the firm with a yearly base salary of $500,000 and a grant of 100,000 stock options. The two co-chief executives of the company, Yongchul Kim, 50, who is known as Charlie, and Meghan Messenger, 47, both of New York, were also arrested and charged with taking part in the scheme, the Justice Department said. The company, which was not named in federal court documents, provided a work force training pilot program to a small part of the Navy from August 2018 through July 2019 until the Navy terminated its contract in late 2019 and directed it not to contact Admiral Burke, the Justice Department said.
