After flatlining the week before, mortgage demand rose last week, despite mortgage rates rising for the fourth straight week. Total application volume increased 1.7% compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. Applications for a mortgage to purchase a home rose 2% for the week but were 1% lower than the same week one year ago. Purchase demand was driven by conventional and FHA loans, with FHA purchase applications seeing a 7% increase. Mortgage rates are about flat so far this week, according to a separate survey from Mortgage News Daily.

Law enforcement missed critical opportunities to prevent a 2022 mass shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado, a pair of lawsuits filed over the weekend allege. The suits claim that the massacre at Club Q in Colorado Springs, which killed five people and injured at least 19, could have been averted if authorities had enforced Colorado’s red flag law. The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners and former El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder are named as defendants in the suits, which accuse them of negligence and, in the case of the deceased victims, wrongful death. A spokesperson for El Paso County declined to comment on the allegations, citing the pending litigation. New York prosecutors told the judge who presided over Donald Trump's hush money trial on Tuesday that his sentencing should be postponed while the president-elect's lawyers file further legal arguments asking the case be dismissed. The proposal Tuesday from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office would need to be signed off on by Judge Juan Merchan to become official. A ruling against Trump on the issue would have paved the way for the judge to proceed with his sentencing, which was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 26. That case has been paused while Trump and some of his co-defendants seek to have an appeals court remove Willis from the case for an alleged conflict of interest. Trump's lawyers have contended that even if she’s allowed to remain on the case, any Trump trial would have to wait until he’s out of office in 2029 because of constitutional issues.

The situation has reached a fever pitch as cosmonauts scramble to patch problem areas and officials from Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, and NASA disagree about the severity of the problem. Looming space station issuesNASA has contingencies in place for crew safety, but the space agency is also grappling with the fact that the leaking Russian module may pose a threat to the safety and longevity of the space station. In addition to Roscosmos, they include the Canadian Space Agency, European Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. NEW YORK CITY — The FBI seized a cellphone and other electronic devices of betting site Polymarket’s CEO Shayne Coplan in a raid on his New York City apartment early Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter. The search comes shortly after the company’s markets wagered correctly and controversially in Donald Trump’s favor in bets for who would win the presidential election, despite opinion polls showing a tight race. The source said it’s not clear if Coplan or Polymarket are targets of an investigation. Polymarket, which Coplan founded in 2020, has recently been the subject of intense debate and scrutiny over its creation of election betting markets. The company brought in more than $3.6 billion from bets placed on the presidential election, including $1.5 billion on Trump and $1 billion on Vice President Kamala Harris, according to an NBC News analysis.
